Ep. 17 - Winter is Coming but That Doesn't Stop Boat Projects ~ Big Easy Sailing

Winter hits South Florida with a vengeance. As bad weather moves in, bad news follows. We continue working on Gone with the Wind's exterior by adding Kiwigrip as our non-skid deck. We also take some time to make a donation to the Bid Dog Rescue Ranch. www.bdrr.org Video uploads will now be every other Thursday. We are working really hard to finish up Gone with the Wind and want to prioritize getting her ready to sail. We will continue to document our journey and hope to return to weekly videos shortly. Thanks for understanding! We are Shawn, Jessie, Mojo and Voodoo. We started our Youtube channel, Big Easy Sailing, to document our journey on our 1972 Gulfstar 36 sailboat. We've been together for 20 years and moved everywhere from our hometown of New Orleans to Alaska to Denver. Now our home will travel with us as we travel across beautiful blue waters. I'll second the recommendation for Indiantown Marina. It's the closest, affordable dry storage with amenities
within 100 miles of Pahokee.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, it wasn't weather. They came into an unfamiliar port AT NIGHT, and ran aground. Total rookie mistake. Fortunately nobody got hurt. Hopefully they've got insurance, not only to cover their boat (home), but the plethora of salvage and possible related environmental costs if they have to bring her up from the bottom. If she goes down in inland US waters, you just can't leave her down there. True for other cruising destinations too.

Nah, we're not that green. Like we pointed out, you got to respect the weather conditions.

The first time I've seen anyone apply kiwigrip out of like a 100 sailing channels. I like the spruce up nature of your channel . Two thumbs up!!

you may want to check out Indian town marina, the MJ Sailing guys were there, and I believe I remember them saying something about it being pretty affordable. but I may be wrong... :) that should be pretty close to where you are as well, if memory serves me it is just passed the 1st lock on the way to Lake Okeechobee from the Atlantic side.

Did you use any kiwigrip in the cockpit too? Trying to figure out how much we will need this spring. Even though you can buy it in 1l cans as well as the 4l cans the price of 3 liter cans is equal to one 4l can. I guess we will buy 2 4l cans and see how far the first can goes before opening up the second one. If we can get away with using just 6l of the stuff we could save $50. I don't think it would store very well.

Cool. At least our cockpit is really small and almost half of that is a teak grate so that doesn't need non-skid obviously. The engine access door a the front of the cockpit is approximately 3x3 feet, and I think I'm going to kiwi most of that leaving a little margin around the edges painted sort of like a typical hatch. With painted margin aound the dogging levers and the hinges this will mean only about 8 square feet in the cockpit to kiwi.

I really like the product and have talked to a bunch of people online and IRL as well as a distributor at the local Chicago boat show whom I asked 1000 questions, and took his time up for the better part of an hour. I can't wait to try it out when it finally gets warm.

We are debating the cockpit floor. Currently no kiwigrip, that would definitely require more than the two 4L cans. Can't answer about storage but we don't plan on trying to have extra.

We have a very shallow draft of 3ft and have passed under the bridges from Stuart to Pahokee already. No worries there. We've checked out a couple of the yards you've mentioned. Just a few more to see before we make final decisions. Thanks for watching!

The Kiwigrip is pretty easy to work with. You do have to move fast or work in small sections or it won't come out right.
