Ep033 11 kts Riding the Gulf Stream, Broken Shroud, Torn Sail...400 mile passage to the USA!

We leave the Bahamas for a 400nm passage to Charleston, SC using the Gulf Stream to whip us north at 11 kts before the wind turns against us. After a rough start the previous episode we find our headsail is torn, then during this passage one of the chain plates pops out of the deck! More things to add to the list, oh well that's #boatlife but we're super excited to have sailed to the States all the way from little old Devon, UK..... **PATREON** https://www.patreon.com/svborabora If you would like to support the making of our videos and help worthwhile causes at the same time, click the link above to become a Patron. Predictwind is as good as any other I guess, it's free to use over a normal data connection, but if you need to use it off shore through a satalite connection you must buy a subscription. we were lucky and given a free 12 months professional level subscription for a year, because of a software problem that meant we couldnt run the app on the new android device I had bought for the purpose. Anyway it gives you all the weather forcast scenarios from the top 4 computer models available, each time you download, this is good because it allows us to cross reference. It's not always correct, local influences will not always be forecast, but it has never been dangerously wrong. This season I will probably go for the same professional subscription for 3 months to cover our east to west Atlantic crossing. I think it's 250 usd for three months 500 for a year. I would go for the standard subscription @ 99usd fo 3 months, but I want the ocean currents data for this crossing, because it involves working with the gulf stream. Hope that all helps. Fair winds!

Great work on the video, as always! You both do a fine job of capturing true life onboard a cruising sailboat, from broken shrouds to fresh baked bread. Keep up the great work!

I can’t think of two more pleasant people that I’d want to go cruising with than Nicki and Ben! You both have great temperaments for close-quarters sailing and you make for a fabulous team! Hope you guys got to enjoy a bit of Charleston while doing the boat repairs. That is definitely one of my favorite American cities! When will you and Ben be heading back to the States?

Congrats on a successful passage - now you are in my home town and I know you are well off in advance of what you are posting but if still around maybe we can buy you a beer? Or dinner and a beer? If so let me know and we'll work on details. My sailboat is at Bohicket Marina but I'll be sailing over April to Charleston 4/15 for a long weekend

Bought my last boat in Charleston and loved it there. Nice people. When you visit the sights and take on board a bit of culture be prepared to learn how the nasty English behaved towards their colonials and started the War of Independence there!

If you hate killing such beautiful fish then don't. I made the decision not to kill anything for any reason and now that moral dilema is resolved my mind is eased. I still eat well on my boat at sea now I have a new way of getting my everything I need in my diet. Just takes a little time to learn what you need and what works for you. Well worth the effort and I recommend to all seafarers who love the ocean and its life.

fun episode.....You are a baking fool Nikki! I just learned how to make raisin scones (recipe from a friend in Norwich UK) but bread loaves! Enjoy Charleston and the trip from Charleston up through Beaufort and into the Chesapeake..great time of year to see it. Annapolis is a must see for a few days. Beautiful part of the country, lots of history (dating back to when the rednecks spanked the Redcoats) and plenty of very professional businesses to assist with repairs, supplies or other. Have fun! Thanks! Andrew

As always - a very nice sailing video! I think your sailing channel is among my top three favourites. I like your focus on sailing, not everything else. And I like your boat. It is different. Sturdy, and beautiful. I hope you will continue for a very long time with your sailing adventures and your videos! In the future, I hope I will have the good fortune to buy a boat similar to yours.

Congratulations, job well done! I just can’t believe you can cook like that, making a cake and some bread while the boat moves so much, what a champion you are! I absolutely hate killing anything, except bugs, so I can relate to you and that fish but it must have been some great meals for you both. I hope all your repairs went well and your visit with the friends epic! Love your stories, always exciting to see what happens next! Safe travels you two!

Good morning guys, very nice to see you doing so well. This video reminds me of the trip last august from Luperon. I crossed from Bimini to Fort Lauderdale. Charleston is lovely and I trust you will enjoy it. Take care and thanks again for your help in getting me ready last fall.

Looked up "fully backed sail" and found nothing. What did you mean and why not buy it?
Jc Regal
Jc Regal - 5 years ago
I think he is referring to the stays (or maybe they are called battens) in the sail. If they run fully across the sail when the wind or the rolling of the boat causes the sail to flip-flop from side to side it makes a "popping" noise. After while he finds the constant popping annoying. And he doesn't think the advantages of a fully stayed sail outweigh the annoyance of the constant "popping" in light air. That's my take on it.
Sailing SV Bora Bora
Sailing SV Bora Bora - 5 years ago
Fully battened. Instead of short sail battens or plain old cloth with no battens like they did in them olden days. Sorry, must be my accent. I guess the argument is that on an boat like ours that doesn't point well there isn't much point in having battened sails, but we do keep the main up when motoring to stop the boat rolling. It's much quieter with no battens. Thanks for watching!

Concerning the stream prediction from PredictWind forecasts , is it available from the free application or the professional one? Thank you
Sailing SV Bora Bora
Sailing SV Bora Bora - 5 years ago
Hi Antoine, predict wind is free to use in its standard form, but to work via a satalite connection, you need to have a subscription. They do 3 months or yearly subscriptions, but the gulf stream data I used was from the Passage Weather web site. A great site that I consider to be one if not the most accurate. I dounloaded those charts before we lost cell service and unfortunately they don't have a satalite compatible format as far as I know. Thanks for watching and fair winds.

Cats are like a table with one leg shorter than the others. Might be less of an issue with the bigger boats but I'm not likely to be in that world.

Actually, cats have an odd reaction to wave action on a beam reach. The hulls react to them at slightly different times which can create a real jerky motion.

Just because something is hard to do doesn't mean you should not do it. The reason we feel bad is because we have respect for the life we have taken. We'd much rather catch, kill and eat a wild fish in this way, and feel some empathy whilst doing it, than buy it in a supermarket where it's been fished in hugely damaging ways to both the species population and the health of the oceans. If we find it hard, but it connects us to where our food comes from, and means we can eat fish in a sustainable way, we'd choose the hard way every time.
