I'm loving the whole series. Finding creative solutions is a fascinating subject. But I notice here that your signature off leaves out the most important sailor - Emma!

CHECK YOUR KEEL while you still can: Two recent videos cited here. One told of a new old boat, sailed to the Caribbean and taken out for bottom paint. They found they bought a keel with more play than your rudder had. Both are professional Architects (SV Uma), The other bought a new old boat, sailed it down the coast for two days and "hit" something doing 2 knots. The keel fell off and the boat sank taking all possessions but their dingy, the dog and one bag of dog food. I'll find it if you need it.

Pouring water into your rudder bearing? How does it not end up absorbed in the foam inside the rudder body?

Years ago (60) I would have used valve grinding paste. I used this to grind in the valves of cars and lorries in to the heads. This would ensure a gas tight seal between the mushroom head of the valve and the face of the seating. The paste can be so fine that you can only just feel the abrasiveness or conversely it can be very course.

My son went for a school trip in england and all he could remember of this trip was poundland ! It must be a very nice place to go ! :)
Good luck with your rudder, hope you'll be soon on the water...

There's a flaw in that procedure, sand will always bottom down. It will only work in the upper parts if you fill the ruder tube all up, right!?
Josef
Josef - 5 years ago
He said it's only tight in spots, so what makes you think the sand won't just go around the tight spots and settle? Path of least resistance.

IMO the abrasive will only go to bottom if the gap is large enough. With this method the abrasive will flush down as far as the tight part. The lapping will then open the gap, (self adjusting.if you like) The only thing that would remain is to flush out all the residual abrasive which i have no doubt Chris will do once he is happy with the play.

Always confident you'd find a solution Chris and you didn't disappoint --- lateral thinking for the win. Your recent mention of lockwire and the use of lapping compound here reminds me of my RAF days -- good stuff.

Good job! How much stuff seeps out whilst you are working it? In a way it'll be nice if it does seep out as then you know you can clear it out to put it into service.

Why didn't you just replace the bushing and the steel tube if it was necessary? It would have been done way faster and with zero risk that anything weird happens in sea later. You have no idea if all gunk you put in there will react over time or if it will cease and glue itself together in high temperatures.

It's cold when the repair is done, it could easy increase with 20-30 degrees in a hot summer day.

Really enjoy when you find how to say it, unusual solutions to problems that doesn't involve the pocketbook. Or at least not relying on it.

I'm still not sure about this solution. Obviously, sanding takes away product, but why did it bind after your initial breaking it free? I still think that something is reacting in the mix and causing it to bind. My opinion. I am NOT an expert.
