Like the spiral cut - would think a sharp Stanley / lino knife would do -
? elsewhere I read that enclosing the wire would accelerate corrosion as water will dry slower & leave the salt & also as its covered checking the rig is much more difficult - ? possible leading to a surprise dismasting down the road ? Would love to hear your views on this

I suppose since people have broken out of prison using a dull hacksaw blade, one could use a razorblade knife to cut the tubing....but it would not be practicable. The plastic is too thick, too hard and far too long. Accelerating corrosion has always been a concern using the tightly gripping, store bought, plastic chafe strips. But in many years of use, I have not seen that problem develop whether we have used 316 or 304 rigging. The PVC tubing is a looser fit so rain can flush through and there is air flow pretty much eliminating any of the ingredients to cause the worries about deteriorating the metal. In in any case, I have never seen a wire fail mid length, which does not mean it can't happen. All the dismastings I know of resulted from a failed chain plate or broken wire at a terminal. So a wire failure is far more prone where the wire enters a terminal. Since the PVC is a loose fit, I would suggest using tiny wire ties on the shroud, about a meter apart to act as spacers so the PVC does not chatter directly against the stay in a strong wind. With my bad hearing I don't hear it but Rebecca, laser ears, does.

I like the concept but that was a lot of plastic that is hard to capture, going into the ocean. Perhaps cutting with a knife would be less of an issue.

Also, I've used a lighter (the "jet" flame type) to lightly melt the "meat hooks" down. If done carefully you get what I think is a more solid fastness, along with a nice smooth rounded surface.

I have never see, what I would think of as a mop head, on rigging, but there are "baggy wrinkles" which are rather bulky chafing gear made from old rope and often look like a big cylindrical sponge.

I wonder if running a string down the center of the PVC then using it's friction back and forth to cut the PVC would work?

I am not sure what sort of string would be abrasive enough to make the cut. The saw blades cut pretty quickly though and I was able to cut in a spiral which does help the grip. On the bottom end, I eventually gave it a wrap of narrow Gorilla tape. Also, it might be useful to install small wire ties at several places on the wire stay as spacers to help keep the PVC tube from chattering on the stay. The sound, on a breezy day, does not bother me but does at times bother Rebecca.

I used to work as a home remodeling contractor. I still have all of my fingers and toes despite all the "dangerous" power tools I used. The thought of doing bodily damage is always in my mind when I use a tool, just like moving around the deck of a boat, the thought of plunging over the side is always one of my biggest fears and helps to keep me safe......so far.

A tip I would add is use flush cut snips to trim the wire ties, zip ties, tie wraps, whatever term you might use. Leaves no chance for getting cut on the short sharpntsils left from angled wire cutters.

Good stuff, Patrick. Can't get enough useful tips for us DIYers, especially for us singlehanders who often find ourselves in a situation where two hands would be helpful (referring to your use of the board and padeyes to hold down the PVC.)
