Not sure I acre with your suggestion of increasing foot tension for heavier winds
In these conditions I e seen the luff flog so badly as to damage it.
Why not just reduce sail. Much better sailing solution.

On my boat to adjust the blocks I would need to move the block on the windward side. Leaving the safety of the cockpit. Tack then again adjust the block on the windward side re tack to get back on course. Seems life a lot off work and twice leaving the safety of the cockpit. Furling the head sail To me would be easier.

Bruce, you are correct. Reef as needed. But, if you are not able to reef right away, move the blocks aft a bit to flatten the sail and open the leech. This setting should not affect the luff of the sail (controlled mainly by halyard tension). Thanks for your comment.

Telltales are not effective on a broad reach. The boat will be pushed by the wind, so most of that air will remain on the windward side of the sail. For close hauled courses or reaches through the beam reach, concentrate on the leeward telltale. If it flutters, ease the sail out. When broad reaching, ease the mainsail almost to the shrouds. Next, ease the Genoa or jib until it just begins to collapse (in the wind shadow created by the mainsail); then trim it in a bit to fill it.

Since you can't get the telltales to stream together on a broad reach, should you trim the genoa out untill the leward telltale streams, or trim the genoa in until the windward telltale streams?
