TBH, the best way for a cruiser to sail is to follow the old addage: "When in doubt, let it out." Let out your sails until they flap a little, then trim in until they stop flapping. When I'm not racing, that's all I ever do. Telltales are a waste of time for a cruiser. trim the jib properly first, then the main. Always front to back.
Also, remove your windex spinner when on the road. Or you'll inevitably end up donating it to the sailing gods somewhere along the highway.
