Gybing out the Gibraltar Strait (Sailing La Vagabonde) Ep. 132

https://www.facebook.com/sailinglavagabonde like us on Facebook to see what unseen footage Riley releases! Off we go, gybing out the notoriously busy Gibraltar Strait. Sea container ships galore... and La Vagabonde amongst the mayhem trying not to get in anyones way. Our good pal Josje is back to help us with the sail down to the Canary Islands, we love her! Join us as we set off on an entirely new adventure. Thanks to this episode and other recent ones, I can now spot the difference between the Aussie and Kiwi accents. Not sure how that compares to us in the US, but we do have our fair share of people in the south that are supposedly speaking English but you can't understand a word they're saying.

Hey Elayna and Riley. Love watching your episodes and have been doing so since the beginning. I work at sea and also love sailing myself. Just wanted do give you a heads up on something I noticed just in case you weren’t aware. A few episodes ago you had some issues with a motor yacht and I believe you might have been in the wrong in terms of COLREGS as you were the overtaking vessel and required to keep clear if this wasn’t the case then my apologies. In this episode you were also in a Traffic separation scheme not following the general flow of traffic or crossing at and angle 90deg to the general flow. The rules that “sailing vessels have right of way” doesn’t always apply especially in TSS or narrow Channels. I don’t mean to be rude at all it’s more so for your safety and that of others. There’s a handy little pocked book you can get for $3 called a seaman’s guide pocket book of the international regulations for preventing collisions at sea. From experience it’s just a bit scary coming down a TSS in a ship that takes miles to slow down or turn and you have a sailing vessel zig zagging across the bow haha in general the captain requires at least a 1 mile CPA otherwise we have to wake him up and that’s no fun at all. Inshore traffic zones are designated for sailing and fishing vessels. Hope this helps. Safe travels.

These sailing videos are just too much for me. I've learned how to stop the video pretty quickly then, what I do is read the comments! So much fun! I'm thinking of starting a YouTube video channel of me reading and commenting on sailing videos. : - ) I wonder how many Patreons I could generate? LOL HaHaHaHa! Only kidding, . . . but then maybe . . . ?

Seriously, I just finished catching up from your first video to your last. I found you guys after finding Sailing SV Delos and realizing that there are more than a couple people/crews who document their sailing lives. Now, having caught up with your episodes I'm going to have to wait for the new vids like everyone else. : - (

I really enjoy and appreciate what you guys are doing. I started sailing when I was 15 (now in my early 60's) and have worked my way up to a 20' Paceship P2-20. I'd like to do some ocean sailing but my local Big lakes (NYS's Finger Lakes) are lots of fun and I'm not sure my 20 footer is good for much more than 2-3 foot seas.

PS - Is there a way to know where La Vagabonde is at any given time? In Florida, USA yet?

Assuming the chair pivots most of a circle, detach it and remount it 180 degrees the other direction. Then it will only pivot the other way and you wont have to bother with lifting feet over that swing arm. ...or find the damn stop that prevents it from pivoting all the way around and cut it off.
fishaholiclures
fishaholiclures - 6 years ago
The problem is the post that goes from sole to the table corner, the chair mounting pivots on that, then the arm rests get in the way...much better than the powder room stool though.

Brilliant. Just brilliant. A little after 13:09 I was sitting here thinking, 'Is it legal, or right, or fair, that a YouTube channel should be allowed to have such beautiful girls and such beautiful souls as Elayna and Josje at the same time?', when that thought was smashed by seeing Riley, naked, squash-washing his jocks on the floor of the shower. The juxtaposition of imagery and its effect on my brain snapped several essential synapses, I'm sure. And I loved the radio chat with the cargo ship fans. Just brilliant. Thank you. :-)

Great to see you guys heading out into the open ocean again it's time for more excitement! The med seemed a little too tame. I'm actually a little disappointed that you're heading to the Caribbean next, seems a little too predictable. :( I'd love to see you guys head somewhere farther off the usual cruiser circuit. Like southeast Asia or how about sailing up the Nile!Good to see that Riley's not afraid to make modifications to the new boat! :)

Finally someone spells gybing correctly. Good on you Elayna for your mastery of the written word.
Jf Mc
Jf Mc - 6 years ago
Ryan Waugh , did you read the article? Again I am afraid that you are not correct. Most people are being taught proper American English.
But I am with you about the metric system...
Take care.
Ryan Waugh
Ryan Waugh - 6 years ago
Jf Mc I don’t have anything against America except how you’ve raped the English language. Maybe not moving to the metric system too. I am sure the American version is becoming more popular because most articles come from America. However most education systems are still teaching proper English.
Jf Mc
Jf Mc - 6 years ago
Ryan Waugh , what century do you think this is? No offense but you couldn't be more wrong.
Please have a read: www.csmonitor.com/layout/set/amphtml/1996/0904/090496.intl.global.1.html

You say we are insulting to you but it really is you that has the illconcieved hostility toward U.S.
Sorry 'mate'
Ryan Waugh
Ryan Waugh - 6 years ago
Jf Mc what countries speak American? I can bet you majority of the world still follows England.
Jf Mc
Jf Mc - 6 years ago
Ryan Waugh , most of the people in the modern world can speak English, that's American English due to the US's far reaching success and cultural influence, Nothing to do with you silly Brits.... Time to get with it and learn real (american) English or just keep your quirky silly habits to yourself.
rebelyell22

Ryan Waugh you speak olde English? Didn’t think so...
Ryan Waugh
Ryan Waugh - 6 years ago
rebelyell22 English came from England, that’s why it is called English not Ameriglish. You guys pretty much stuffed it up and it is insulting when you try to get the whole world to follow your changes.

Gybe in Canada, too. In a few score years I suspect we'll blend together into a less interesting, bland homogenized language.

Actually it is Jibing, not gybing. This makes sense only if you a member of the crown colony, which here in the U.S. we are not. She also said "trolley", totally different meaning here.

and here i thought they spelled it wrong ? Jibe = USA Gybe = UK

Riley, I'm pretty sure you could make the seat turn the right way, unscrew turn base 180 deg. before screwing it back. It would make the seat not able to shear/break your legs off. Give it another try…

Btw: I used the rest of such chair, to make a moveable laptop workplace...
