Great Vid guys, just thinking when you said you were in that rolly anchorage in Tarempa last time have you ever tried a 'Swell Bridle'? for when wind or current has you on an angel to the prevailing swell causing rolling. p.s. that Cat of yours is vicious :)

I think at the start of the dream there are 3 options.
New.
Used and (almost) ready to go.
Used and need of renovation or refit.
So I think there is tremendous interest in the unknown costs of refitting a yacht. I can't wait to see your coverage of costings.

We have done occasionally, but the stress on your windlass in that kind of swell is dangerous. We broke two snubbers within minutes in a similar situation, and moved off pretty quickly. ✌️Liz

Beanieweenieable Why bring religion into this? Some of the subscribers of this channels are also Muslims. If you visit a place and meet people, respect their culture and religion. Comments like yours and others, which are Islamophobic AND making generalization or assumptions obviously leave bad taste to audience of this channel.

Several things are at work in Myanmar, formerly Burma. First of all, In reality, the country is still run by the Military generals who have a long history of brutality towards ALL GROUPS that resist. Just ask the Christian Karen population. Secondly, the military is able to fan the flames by insisting the Rohingya are acting as insurgents for radical elements in Pakistan. Of course, that is debatable, but I am certain those Taliban elements in Pakistan would like the idea. In the Philippines, with its Muslim population in the south, most of the radical Islamic groups have ties to similar groups outside the Philippines. This is certainly true with the Abu Sayyaf as well as the MILF. Their actions include things such as beheadings and setting off bombs in shopping malls. Otherwise, there is considerable fraternization on a daily level, even including seeing Muslim students at a Catholic university such as Xavier in Cagayan de Oro. My Catholic mother in laws seamstress is Muslim and they have known each other for years. Such relationships are quite common.

In the Philippines, the expression goes..."You just have to be PRACTICAL..." which means whatever the need, adapt as necessary..
It is usually accompanied with a Filipino style shrug of the shoulders, with the implication being that ALL reasonable people should understand this...it can be quite endearing.

I think you are right now, though this has not always been the case. In that early period of my travels, things were happening there that I am not even willing to post on a public forum. Overall, I think interfaith marriage is pretty unusual, if the mandate for the non-Muslim to convert in case of marriage, is enforced. In some areas I suspect that there is quite a bit of "flexibility", given the Southeast Asian way of doing things.

We spent over a year in Satun, which has a higher % of Muslims than other areas in Thailand (nearest airport Hat Yai). It was a benign and happy place. Two of the Buddhist young men who worked with us were married to Muslim women, which surprised us (with our preconceptions). Interfaith marriage is not unusual there. ☺️ Liz

Well, Thailand is about 90% Theravada Buddhist. I first spent time there in 1993. Of course, on the Thai peninsula the Islamic population is more concentrated. At that time long ago, my train ride was interrupted because there had been a bombing of the tracks in an attempt to derail a train. This was on a trip to Hat Yai from Bangkok. Within Malaysia it self, though officially an Islamic country, was going after the same groups mercilessly. I do not know how the population within Malaysia is distributed, but the importance of the Chinese and Hindu merchant classes seem to dominate economically even though they are in a minority. At least in the north, as in around Penang, during Chinese New Years days, the place nearly grinds to a stop on certain days. Se Asian Islam seems more tolerant than many areas, except in a few areas such as parts of Mindanao like Jolo or nearby Sulu. Some of those islands are fantastic and very much un-touristed because in fact, it is a very dangerous place to be if you are from out of the area. Vietnam is over 80% Buddhist for example, with the only other group really are the Catholics.
While Mindanao is of course not at all Buddhist except for some small percentage of Chinese Pinoys, is is perhaps 60% Catholic and mostly Muslim for the remainder. Of those, most are just working people, some of whom I dealt with on a very frequent basis due to their connections to my family there.

Beanieweeniable - it's unfortunate you feel like this but it was a recording of the call to prayer in Tarempa. Since the episode was all about Tarempa I'm not sure why it should be annoying. It's all part of the atmosphere!

Hi Sailnblue. I'm interested to know which Buddhist areas you are referring to. Both Thailand and Malaysia are a real mix of religions. Not much live and let live going on in Myanmar right now.

Liz- I have heard plenty of both, though many times the call to prayer was a bit chilling because I knew that a certain percentage of the locals did not much like me...I think Jihadi is the term I was looking for, but I realize the area you are in is pretty benign. In an area where beheadings are possible, it all sounds different though. I must say, for Asia, I prefer the Buddhist areas. They are so live and let live!

Thank You Liz! I have another question. Im from Europe and back there, I had no problems with North/East/South and West directions. I could instantly tell anyone wich way was wich and also what time it was, without a compass or a watch... But I've beeing living for over a year in New-Caledonia, in the southern hemisphere and everything is... the other way around! At first, I was totally lost! I finally decided that I schould always face south (like I use to do in the northern hemisphere), knowing that the sun goes over my head and behind me in the southern hemisphere. But still... it feels strange! I still dont feel confortable and things are always a little bit confusing! Maybe You could do a vid about this... strange and funny topic! How do You sailors, deal with that?

My friend almost lost a hand due to a cat scratch. The doctors said he caught cat scratch fever (which I thought was just metaphorical). His hand swelled so much (like a balloon) they had to cut it and leave it for a few days and his lymph nodes swelled up pretty bad - and that was in Arizona.

I am surprised you don't keep an antibiotic cream/ointment in the kit on board. The triple antibiotic ointments are really good. Ointments are oil based and creams are more water based.

Looking forward to watching you guys build your hard dodger. I've been talking about putting a hard top on our Hallberg-Rassy dodger/windshield since we got our boat. It's just been too big of a project to tackle with all the other things we needed to do. It's good to have better protection from the spray, bad weather, and even the hot sun. It would also be a great place to mount more solar panels. One big thing would be better handholds for us, since we already have pretty good protection with our hard windshield and soft top, but oing forward past the windshield can sometimes be a bit dodgy while dodging by the dodger to get to the foredeck with our narrow side decks.

I enjoyed your video. The response to questions were especially helpful on a number of key points. Do worry about the wound and the treatment you received? Infection is always a worry and I wonder if you carry any medicines aboard ....and whether you have an insurance driven help line you can call or even a video consult if things didn't improve? I imagine you have thought through all of these things given your mastery of all things 'cruising'. Wishing you all the best.

I would like to suggest Nu-Stock sulfur paste for your wound. I keep a tube onboard, incredible for wound infections and prevention. any wound at all seems to heal quickly and nearly scare free.
I really enjoyed this video, beautiful area your in. I've been going to your past videos as well, I love all the videos on your refit.

Oil of oregano and olive extract both have antibiotic abilities and can pass through any boat inspections as a vitamin or supplement. I always carry them. Cheers!

I'm really getting close to thinking about a boat now, can you give your guestimate/info on checking in/out. Does boat length matter, is a 50'er dearer than a 40'er and what do you think the average fees are??? ( I guess they are per person) for people.

We haven't been charged for rubbish collection anywhere yet. In some places we don't drop off rubbish because there is nowhere to put it, and they have enough trouble disposing of their own. Most of the time we store it till we reach a better-equipped destination. ✌️Liz

My cats liked to scratch my furniture too. I feel your pain.

I made them a scratch post and every time I caught them scratching something naughty, I picked them up, scolded them, and put them on the scratch post. They picked it up in no time.

I covered a wood base in scrap carpet, screwed two 2x4's together and wrapped them tightly in twine about the diameter of my finger. Attach that to the base and you have yourself a cheap, easily repairable (Millie will tear it up) scratching post.

Liz, cats can be testing to your patience in the best of times! Some of my cats learned much quicker than others. You just have to be firm and consistent. As long as you give her an alternative vs just telling her not to scratch, I bet she'll get it. Cats have to sharpen their claws. If you don't give them something they CAN scratch, forget it.

She poops in a toilet! She can learn to scratch a scratching post! Lol

Sailing followtheboat, I made my scratch post tall enough that they could climb it... when I'd introduce them to the post, put them almost at the top. They'll dig their claws in and hang on instinctually. Eventually they'll scratch it. Best of luck!
