Can you please tell me why they would use a "preferred channel" buoy at the RG "GC Sandy Point? Is there a channel there? I don't see a channel at all, but I do see hazards near by.

Green lighted buoy "3" marks another channel on the east side of the island. Entering from seaward on the east side of the island, you would keep LB "3" to port. The preferred channel buoy "GC" is being used for the channel on the west side of the island. Entering from seaward on the western side, you would keep buoy "GC" to starboard.

Captain John's Skipper Tips thank you, but I'm still confused. That buoy makes sense, but when you showed the next buoy; the one off of banana point, it's a 2 color buoy, indicating "preferred" channel correct? From what I can tell, you would not want to pass between that buoy and the point. It looks dangerous. Am I looking at this all wrong?

These buoys are called "preferred channel buoys", but here it's used to show that side which has the deepest water.
