The figure-eight knot is an important stopper knot used by sailors. Your jib sheets or Genoa (Genny) need stopper knots in their ends. These keep the sails under control. A stopper knot or Figure 8 is a knot tied in the end of a halyard or jib sheet that will prevent the line from pulling through fairleads etc and will always keeps your line accessible in its proper place. It’s tied so that you can get it undone even when wet – as opposed to what's commonly called a knife knot which means you need a knife to undo it.
