From my understanding, the part you describe as the bitter end,should be called the working end. I was always taught that the term "bitter end" came from an anchor warp. It was the part that secured to the bitts. hence, when the anchor was ran out so that it could go no more. the sailors would cry " she's at the bitter end skipper". Maybe its a UK thing? e.g. vang,kicker

Whenever I coil audio cables, I always alternate coils over/under to prevent twisting. Is this a bad idea for 3-strand or braided lines?
