Great Video. So what we learn. Producing Sailing Videos sucks. Recently my 5 year old looked "100 surprise eggs, Unboxing Winnie The Pooh, Mickey mouse, Kinder Surprise, My little pony" Those channels have 190K subscribers & 27.000.000+ views. Compare that even with the numbers of Delos or La Vagabond. Ok, you won't get any Patron support or a "free" catamaran, but the effort / reward looks way better on "stupid" videos...

Wow finally found someone honest in sailing community who made sense in all of that. Sailing is good sport  also for those who are close to 2/3 of planet covered by water back to mother nature healthy kind of recreation.  To expensive and impractical for rest who prefer to be on higher ground where their jobs are.

Also as you said not all sailors are Joshua Slocum or  other who followed that idea type of long distance sailors. Admire those who did and are doing it.  Wonder if Linus and mine book of practical science ideas would make more money for happy future? ??

From an analytical standpoint...this is great information. THANK YOU for crunching and sharing the numbers. I did learn a lot from your hard work! However, much like others have commented...it's not always just about the numbers. I believe it's almost solely about creating good, unique content and having your own THING! (i.e. BRANDING) Almost anyone can pick up a camera and shoot video. Almost anyone can edit video. But not many can come up with and actually
create a decent story-line. I believe Delos is the best at this so far. These things are KEY! I have a 3 year plan to became a cruiser and much of that plan is learning about the items I mentioned above. Also, DO NOT count on Patreon or other platforms to push you around the Big Blue. Our plan is to be self funded and use Patroen as a supplemental source. If it works...all the better. If not, we have a backup plan! I'm not interested in becoming a slave to an audience where I feel pressured to create a video every week. Even though I see it as fun and a will be pretty good at it. Stay Tuned!

Great info much much appreciated!!! thank you. Suggestions : put some color in the back drop. Brown is so boring. White or a light color shade. maybe a plant and your best fav. family sailing photo. pros: very target specific informative topic. you have very few if any tangents. The dog is cool. Cherish your organic reactions and calm demeanor when Sophie shows up. She is adorable. Really shows the love you have for family. keep up the great work mate. Maybe sail into you one summer.

Hey Linus, thought I might correct you there, according to Sailing La Vagabonde's recent Q&A at their boat launch, the boat isn't free. Outremer have just made a way to finance it for them.
Slow Boat Sailing
Slow Boat Sailing - 7 years ago
Yeah I saw that when it came out after this video. The date on this video is February 18, 2017. The Sailing La Vagabonde video that explained the financing and discount came out after this video. The Q&A at Outremer came out after this video. Before that they said they were "given" a million dollar yacht.

I'm glad you mentioned the importance of editing video. Just because you have 2 hours of raw footage doesn't mean a longer video is going to be better. Much the same when you take 2 dozen photos of the same scene you don't want to show them all to viewers or they'll be bored by the third photo. Pick your best and move on... cull and edit. Say in 10-15 minutes what may take you 30 on the first pass.
There are great video tutorials out there to learn from. Some are free and not that in depth and some may cost $25 for a month subscription but it's an all-you-can-eat buffet during that month and you can cancel before they charge you for the second month. Learn about improving the quality of the video splicing, balancing audio, voice overs, story line and B-roll.
Quality production draws quality viewership (of the kind that appreciates it and supports it).

oceandrew On the round the world vlog series episodes 1-9 we averaged 150 to 200 cuts in 8 minute videos. The 2 to 4 second cuts were probably excessive in retrospect. It depends on the content. I know plenty of successful creators who average over 60 seconds per cut but all the channels that break 100 subs and keep growing steadily only post edited videos.

Don't have the internet to watch the video, but read the report... Very interesting. Hoping to move ourselves up that scale a bit. (I'm below the average... but maybe one day...). I'm hoping between patreon, as well as upping my video production to get video gigs as we travel, and do photography work will eventually be able to pay for our continued traveling... Granted I have several more years to be able to get it to that point while my family is crew aboard my father-in-law's boat.

Thanks for both doing the research, as well as sharing it with us all.
Kraken Kissed Sailing Adventures

I have no idea... But I'm also not looking at Patreon as the main form of income (though it does make more then the adsense). for me it's also about being able to get regular practice with video, and an excise to do it (documenting our trip)... But also as a point of interest and way to be able to connect with people (and a point of interest) who might be interested in my video and photography. And yes, not everyone who tries to make videos for a living does it, but there are also plenty of people who make and post videos (and accept money) who aren't really looking at it from a business perspective. Personally, I adore studying photography, cinematography AND business... So it just seems natural to try to combine them... I've been studying the business of being a video content creator... lol
Slow Boat Sailing
Slow Boat Sailing - 7 years ago
It's fun being in the movie biz! I suspect that being a sailing channel is more lucrative on Patreon than other more popular genres because the barriers to entry are high (having rights to live and film on a boat) and the viewers have more disposable income. 2 of the 35 best paid creators on Patreon were sailing channels. My guess 0.0001% of YouTube channels are sailing channels, but I have no hard data.
Kraken Kissed Sailing Adventures
Kraken Kissed Sailing Adventures - 7 years ago
Also to add a bit more to what you've said, if people are really looking to make money as a video creator on youtube, they should study more then just the sailing channels. I actually study several other kinds of channels. I follow and learn from people that TEACH about being a content creator... And I am serious about learning the art of video production. (Of course the "sailing" part is more of my husband's interest, the "video" part is mine... and how I stay sane when I'm stuck on a boat with people... lol) Granted, my goal is also not just to make our sailing videos, but to use those to give me a reason to practice video making so I can make short films, documentaries, promotional videos and video portraits... and the like...

It's gotten as ridiculous as a sailing channel that had no boat but have a patreon account.

Walter Scott I brought up my books because I and other video creators earning next to nothing often get accused of living off Patreon. I'm actually on the record of saying folks should not quit their jobs to sail off over the horizon in How to Sail Around the World Part-Time. I guess Folks creating free content will get criticized no matter what they do. The folks creating the videos you consume don't have to volunteer their time for your entertainment. Hi, good information , so a comment I had just done never made it , don't know why, I like to post comments but utube make it so hard.
Anyway I am a longtime supported of sailing channel KTL but Dylan winter and want to help him find a way to get funding for his project. He has the highest by far film uploads (540) after the big 2-3 from the sailing channels study. But he gets no Adsense money , and is not on FB , probably because he, like his demographic are 50-70 and want nothing to do with a data mining site like FB. But prehaps we have to bite the bullet, but I really don't want to. What you say is Pateron is different from all the other crowd funding as it's geared toward sustaining funding and not one time funding. This has to be the way to go , Are there any other funding models you know of that are working to generate significant money?
Thank you. Warren

Slow Boat Sailing - 7 years ago
There was no association between aggregate number of videos and being on Patreon. There was a STRONG association between uploading new videos and being on Patreon. The Patreon creators get paid for putting out new content and they seem to responding to that often modest incentive. If you have put out a lot of good content that people like then you'll have a lot of subscribers and views per video which you can monetize with your new videos by setting up a Patreon campaign. Everybody in sailing has a demographic of primarily men 35+. That also means that most viewers have disposable income to support video creators or pay for premium content.
warp21drive
warp21drive - 7 years ago
Hi linus, you asked for comments on you film.
The presentation was rather dead pan until your pet and daughter joins the video. The paper presentation. Is hard to follow when you read the actual numbers , like 145,653 instead of saying approx 150 thousand. It's fine in the written word as you can see the number and read it as one word but if you were giving a lecture you would try and talk in a way to keep the listener engaged. Remember the data although accurate has already changed so the finite numbers mean nothing in the long run.
You mentioned playing video to the end is good for you channel , but does it matter if the film is 5 or 55 minutes long? That must make a big difference to whether they are played to the very end.
Thumbs up on utube is a pain as it just add video to a list of liked video. And that becomes huge and as a tool to go back and watch again it's a pain, but prehaps I'm. Missing the point there. And linking and sharing I don't understand or how to do. W.

Slow Boat Sailing thank for your response , we have to help KTL to keep making video , it's the best stuff out there and it dosn't use the usual pretty girl hooks.
So his video do not fit the usual click bait model so should he produce short versions for YouTube and proper directors cuts for website or pateron if he ever creates an account?
Slow Boat Sailing
Slow Boat Sailing - 7 years ago
YouTube will rank videos higher in search based on watch time. AdSense is based on watch time. A 1 minute video that gets 5,000 views with 100% retention is not ranked as highly as a 50 minute video that gets 500 views with 50% retention. That being said, I think it is better to create short, well edited, interesting videos that people will watch than put out hour long videos no-one will watch. YouTube wants folks to keep watching. That is where YouTube makes money from advertising to people on the platform.

Thumbs up and comments helps videos rank higher in search. That tells YouTube that the video is something that people value. I often have the problem of comments not posting too.

Hi,
Very interesting information.
so I watched all the way thru on a shared link in KTL by Dylan Winter, his comments above. Do you get credit for me watching on his embedded ?
I am one of his long time supporter and follower. He has from the sailing channel study one of the top numbers of film uploads behind the top 2-3. But he does not get the funding he needs , he gets no adsense, he is not on Facebook , he started before FB was big, and most of his demographic 50-70 are like me unwilling to join Facebook ( even though we had to join Google+ to see his content on utube ) so prehaps the FB thing is necessary. The different nature of the Pateron being for sustaining funding rather than onetime and started by a musician and not original as a money making concern. I hope you paper will encourage KTL to try the Pateron model us longtime supporters need him to find funding so he can continue, but unchanged we hope.
Thank you.
Slow Boat Sailing
Slow Boat Sailing - 7 years ago
Yes, embedded videos go towards views and watch time. I appreciate it when bloggers embed my videos. Blog links (and embedding) are very valuable for Google search results. Facebook is a valuable way to share videos in sailing because the demographics are so old. There are lots of 50-70 year-olds on Facebook. 70% of US adults are on Facebook.

very interesting - that explains the position the way I see it. As the oldest and longest lasting sailing video maker on the planet you are completely correct. My own project has hit the buffers after a decade. The transition from paid for DVDs to "wooo hoo its all free on youtube" has not been a smooth one.

Some folks on Patreon are using it as a pay wall. Thus, they give some content away free like major newspapers, but to get it all you need to be a patron. Unlike Vimeo there is no monthly fee to be a creator on Patreon. While 99 percent of subscribers will not become patrons, Patreon revenues is something like 20 times AdSense revenues. Thus, it is keeping many folks on YouTube still producing when they would have turned to other pursuits.
