I never sail downwind with the main up to me its an upwind sail and to important a sail (its causes to many problems, gybes, broaches stc
Hear in Western Australian we can get 30kns wind shifts of 60 degrees which can destroy the main. its also too expensive to damage).
I only use headsails or spinnakers. As this keeps the CE forward of the mast and very easy to furl a sail.

Safer with a small headsail on a sustained run in higher winds--as long as you have the sea room.

This is great Captain John, recently tuning a mates boat with a new number 3 jib, realised I was instinctively applying the theory you presented. We were racing and it was driving me mad having main back winding. We played around after the race and moved cars to outside track and gained .5 to 1 knot of boat speed. It's all about protecting the shape of both jib and main keeping an appropriate "slot" for air flow between the two.
