You should really work on your fishing technique. Stand up and fight if with the rod dont just wind it In. Good video, great sailor, not much of a fisherman. Also big waste of meat

It's not that bad, the guy has done some fishing before. The fillet job wasn't the best. He does have the gaffe theory correct, but needs some practice, and I do like that he opts for the rod and reel instead of a hand line.

Fly on the Rod T.V. What are you talking about??? You always gaff over the fish and pull back. Never do you scoop the fish like you do with a net. You miss far more with that technique and also hit belly which is easier to rip.

Nice fish. Shame this guy really doesn't have a clue. So many incorrect ideas, it's hard to know where to start.

How far back did he put the lure??? It matters, based on boat speed, wake etc.

Never gaff a fish "underneath", because if you miss, could easily dislodge the hook. Never gaff it on the shoulder, or anywhere in the eating part. Always under the chin, or throat. This is gaff 101.

If you are going to filet a fish on youtube, maybe learn how to do it first. Go to a fish market or store, or a fishing boat and ask them to show you. It takes a fair while to learn how to do this properly, and a very long time to do it fast and neat, without leaving half the fish on the bone. If you are going to kill an animal to eat, make it worthwhile.

The way he kills fish is "Ike-Jime". It is the Japanese way to kill a fish. Personally, I believe it is the best way to kill a fish. The way he takes the meat is typically UK or Northern American, no-bone fish fillet is the only thing in the normal supermarket unless you go to Chinatown.

I remember sailing from Tampa to Panama City. A three day trip but only an hour or so of fishing. No freezer on board and not much room in the Ice Chest. We ate lot of fish but we also wasted too much. If the guy was like us and couldn't keep the meat from fresh then I'm ok with discarding the Dorado as he did.

I fish off my small yacht on the east coast UK too but with worms at anchor as the water is too murky for lure fishing. I used to have fishing boats before buying a sailboat but wanted a cruising boat. Yachts make good fishing boats too as they are stable at anchor.

By severing the spinal chord just behind the gills, you're only keeping it from flopping around, right? Wouldn't it still be alive while starting to bleed it? Wouldn't it be better (more humane) to kill it quick with a knife to the brain itself first? We do exactly that when spearing if we don't get a perfect kill. Serious question, not a criticism.

You did a few very smart things. First, by bleeding in the bucket, instead of overboard, you don't end up with a sea lion or shark taking it from you (happens all the time). Second, spiking the fish is smart and humane, I really liked that. The only thing I would suggest is that when you bring a fresh fish on deck, kick that reel into freespool.

Do you ketch fish almost daily? How did you cook that fish?
thwolf1969
thwolf1969 - 8 years ago
I grew up on a cruising sailboat. Not catching anything is the exception. Grilling is easy when you're at anchor. While underway and things are rockin' and rollin', I found that pan frying medallions rolled in egg then rolled in corn meal is the easiest, cleanest way to cook up dinner. Anything you can cook in a single pot or pan is the way to go while the waves are rolling.

Yes, you can make a stew in a pot by simmering the head and backbone and flaking off the remaining meat. Chop up some vegetables, throw them in with rice and a great meal can be had. You guys are too hard on this guy though. Many people with long range cruising boats don't even have rod holders on the stern or fishing gear in the boat and then complain about lack of variety of food onboard. This guy is trying to help THEM with some basic fishing tips.
Claude C

Why would you throw away the rest of the fish? there seemed to be a lot of meat still on it. You could make a fish stew or soup or something. No?
thwolf1969
thwolf1969 - 8 years ago
No. Storage is at a premium on a boat. Cold storage is even more precious. Refrigerated fish tastes like crap compared to what it tastes like when it's 20 minutes from ocean to plate. Toss the carcass into the deep blue, let the scavengers have the rest and keep on moving.

Wow people are harsh on the filleting job that you did. That is pretty much a run of the mill filet. Not the greatest job I've seen, but not worthy of such harsh criticism. I've seen some that will get some meat out of the head, but you generally don't mess with meat around the stomach or backbone. Too much hassle for too little reward.

God what a joke this video. The only good advice is slowing the boat down. As he's reeling the fish his broken rod is twisting and the roller guide is fraying the line. Buy a decent rod and reel. A cheap 8/0 senator with 100 to 150 lb line and a decent rod will do. Nothing wrong with reeling a fish from the rod holder. Only billfish and dolphin jumps which is when you'll lose them. Wahoo and tuna stay deep so easier to catch with the rod in the holder which is probably safer if you fear falling overboard. Once a wahoo tires you can just plane them in.
Please google videos on how to fillet a fish. Many videos out there on how to fillet each species. Get a cut proof fillet glove to wear when filleting if your new to it. This guy only got half the meat. He missed all the meat toward the head of the fish. There is a long strip of meat almost the whole way up the top side. Dolphin have a large backbone so cutting straight up you miss most of the meat. Just google how to fillet a dolphin and forget you ever watched this video. Not much meat in the head but good for soup.
If tooth critter like wahoo (sashimi!!!) are around go with a wire leader. If not mono with work. I'd fish wire or cable leaders on all my lures if I was sailing unless schools of tuna were solid then I'd put out mono leaders.
Also make sure to gaff from behind the direction your traveling as not to gaff over the line and break the fish off. Kill it how ever you want. For a tooth fish a bat to the head works best as you don't want to anywhere near hundreds of razor sharp teeth until the fish is dead unless you don't mind being airlifted to the hospital of one of these suckers gets a hold of you.

Much of what I wanted to say has already been said. But the most disturbing thing for me about this video is throwing so much good meat back into the sea! Especially as a liveaboard cruiser, you should be using every last piece from the fish before you hook another one (only take what you can eat).
And that includes the head, which is regarded in many cultures as the most nutritious part of the animal.
This is what to do with a fish this size when on passage:
1. Make cevice with lemon/lime juice
2. Pickle/cure/dry fillets
3. Grill/Barbecue fillets
4. Take the bones and anything else and boil to form fish stock
5. Make a chowder/soup/stew using the fish stock
Fair winds!

I can understand the frustration of seeing good food being wasted but at the same time, the ocean isn't your coastal fishing grounds or deer hunting grounds, don't get me wrong I'm not calling you landlubbers, it's just that whether the fish stays on the surface or goes deep down it'll feed another happy fish, or help microorganisms. Everything you throw into compost on land can be thrown in the sea..

I get the novice quick and easy approach. I can even see how what you tossed overboard becoming food for other fish and possibly bottom dwellers... I would call this a "How to" on a small boat in rough seas. I have seen this technique become common practice now though. Next time you hit port invest some time at a fish market and see if they will up your game. Otherwise, your effort and vids are appreciated...

Wow, sure left out lots of opportunity for advice.

How about:

1. Use a minimum of 100lb test offshore. 150-200 if using a handline (handlines on doubled-up surgical tubing - 6 ft works far better than the biggest Penn real/Rod combo) Why? Because it allows the rig to fight the fish. Once tired you simply hand over hand the line in. Tie a small bell to the surgical tubing to let you know dinner is on.
2. Use very large treble or double hooks and sharpen each point even if they are brand new
3. As noted below, use cheap Gin or Vodka in the gills to dispatch the catch
4. Gaff into the gills
5. Let the catch fully tire before gaffing
6. Fully bleed the catch (especially Tuna) before filleting by tieing off the tail and hanging over the side. Even the smallest catch will bleed profusely and make a bloody mess.

With my rod/reel combo I usually hear...zzzzzzzzz....zzzzzzzz.......zzzzzzzzz.....streeeeetch....snnnnnnap - lost catch

With my handline hear ring, ring, ring....then dinner

Cheers and happy fishing

Dude, you butchered that fish. You missed all the head meat. If you're going to tell people how to do something do it well.

Isn't the aim to butcher it?

When catching fish at sea . pour any alcohol on the gills . Just a cap full . The fish will OD and no struggle  . I don't use a rod but use the bungee chord  and  bell method . After filleting , dry the rest with salt to make fish jerky or in the oven . Good video and thanks for sharing .

Alex Freire its not the same as throwing it in the trash, he basicly gave another fish an easy dinner, so its not completely wasted.

I would have cleaned a little more meat off, then made a nice soup out of the carcass, with rice and beans, and maybe a salad if I had the veggies. Yummy!

Needs to work on his gaffing technique (try not to gaff through your fillets), and his filleting technique (not to mention sharpening that dull filleting knife).

Clearly they were well stocked because there was about another 4 pound of good meat left on that carcass. :-) Good advice though.

+Iandi Boats Exactly my thought on seeing this. The dorado's flesh goes up above it's head. I would also go down from the head rather than up from the tail when filleting, running the knife with the angle of bone rather than against it. That blade could have been sharper, too.

+Tom “Sail Before Sunset” Peranteau Defiinitely, Tom. Unless you're lucky or a pro, catches that size don't come along every day!
