β–Ά Check out my gear on Kit: https://kit.com/followtheboat This is what sailing around the world is all about, right? Sailing to Indonesia for the pristine, white, sandy beaches, coral reefs and tropical fish, and to anchor in blue lagoons, azure seas and crystal clear water. This is what it means to be in a liveaboard sailboat, isn't it? Not necessarily! We're cruising on a sailboat and travelling across oceans to meet new people and try new experiences...like being burned in the name of homespun medicine in a wooden hut over the sea... Before saying goodbye to our dear, new friends and hello to the deserted islands, Liz volunteered to try a local health remedy purported to improve circulation. We never found out what the evil white powder was, but it bloody burned, and it made Liz's face turn bright pink! Beware of local cures in remote Indonesia! Very enjoyable video, thank you for sharing. I loved watching how welcoming and friendly the local villagers were, and the large happy families. I wish more people were able to experience other cultures, before being so quick to judge. I have personally been to over 16 but that is only a tiny fraction of what I would like to experience. May you have fair winds and following seas.

Sailing followtheboat
Sailing followtheboat - 6 years ago
[Liz] If you've watched the episode to the end you'll understand. Far from playing on people's irrational fears (which seems commonplace when it comes to Muslim countries in many of the comments we have received here and on social media) we're trying to illustrate how people around the world share a common decency and a sense of humour. Peace and fair winds.

Excellent titling. Utilizing part of the contentsΒ of the comment sectionΒ from the previous video keeps everyone on track, and forces those who don't know what was said to go back andΒ look at the previous video. Someone is a marketing genius. Lye is an age old caustic powder used to "help" the dissolving of human flesh - to destroy evidence.Β Acid burns are a joke in some cultures, and a right of passage in others, but you won't knowΒ which until they are laughing at you, or not. If you look in the background, not everyone is laughing, while every one of them knew what was happening. All ended well this time...
Sailing followtheboat
Sailing followtheboat - 6 years ago
[Liz] It wasn't lye or caustic soda, that was my little joke after it started heating up! My hands felt great afterwards, nothing like the effects of caustic soda which I have used for unblocking drains for many years. Granted, the little girl in the back of the thumbnail looks confused, but the whole exercise was a lot of fun for everyone...even me once I was over the initial shock.

Hi guys. When I was at sea, a long long time ago, we made water via evaporation, but never within 50 miles of a shore line, because not all chemicals/wastes would be removed at a certainty. Is this different for the RO units now used?

[Liz] If you watch till the end you'll find that nothing is dangerous about Indonesia, in our experience. We've been taking a bit of flak on YT and social media for sailing in such a "dangerous" area by people (most of whom, I would guess, have never been there) which is why we ask the question in the title. Our videos, we hope, show that it is not dangerous at all, and is a very welcoming country. Peace and fair winds!

I for one am glad the Internet Police showed up and gave these dangerous instigators what for! What's the world coming to when sailing videos can go about shouting "ni!" at 'there' customers and viewers! Next time wrap your video in a brown paper bag and label it something like "Sailing Video #312 - Stuff and Things in a Remote Location" - that way you avoid aggravating those of us who can't handle the slightest spice in life. [Liz] And I'll say it again in a different way, to someone else who appears not to have watched the video... We have had several negative comments on social media and YouTube about Muslim countries, so we are trying to counter this feeling by showing how welcoming and how much fun they can be. If people who are frightened of Muslim countries watch the video it is our hope that they might start to question their opinion. With 782 "likes" at the time of writing, I'd say lots of people have got and agree with the message.
The thumbnail (which is a screengrab from the video, by the way) and the question in the title are there to catch people's attention, isn't that the idea of titles and thumbnails? "Clickbait" generally means titles and thumbnails which have little to do with actual content - which these do.
Why did you click on it?

I watch all the videos! A question about accessing all those small uninhabited islands...they must be owned by somebody. How do you know or are they all owned by the country/state and considered open to all? Or if private do the laws allow a shared resource up to the high tide line like America?
Sailing Catamaran Diving Adventures
Sailing Catamaran Diving Adventures - 6 years ago
Hi Liz , we were last there in mid 2016 when the moorings were still free, looks like the island landlords have become somewhat greedy at 50 Β per day,
Sailing followtheboat
Sailing followtheboat - 6 years ago
+Sailing Catamaran Diving Adventures [Liz] When were you there? It all changed in October at Bawah. There are moorings now in the bay which the resort owners require boats to use at around $50 a day, effectively putting paid to cruisers on small incomes visiting. It may change, of course, here's hoping!

[Liz] The southern most island in the group, Bawah, is privately-owned and is being turned into a resort. Yachts may use the privately-laid mooring buoys in the small lagoon, but we were told the charge is prohibitively expensive. I hope Anambas doesn't become like the Maldives.
Hui San
Hui San - 6 years ago
An Island can be owned by a private entity in Indonesia, and yes everyone still can have an access to that beach up to the high tide line.
Sailing followtheboat
Sailing followtheboat - 6 years ago
Dave Schuetrum [Liz] They are owned by someone, sometimes the government. But the culture over here is quite different to the west. It's not usual for anyone to bar people from landing on a beach, that only happens when a private hotel takes over an island and builds a resort, and even then they won't stop you from anchoring. They're much less exercised about ownership and trespass than we are.
Great question, and one which deserves more attention...

You two are awesome as usual. Your vids R so clear. What's your main camera again. And your Drone work is up there with the best. Kind of rare to see much sailing in alot of the channels at the moment. What is your drone again.. Brilliant also. Well done guys. The best also at making the vids with a calming affect.

{Liz] We use a number of cameras, look at the description beneath the video and you will see the complete list. Jamie has posted a video about vlogging cameras, you can see it here: http://bit.ly/ftbBestCamera
