This video had a lot of useful information.

Vision (2:58) tells us to look out for gusts, presumably by watching clouds. I haven't sailed before or spent a lot of time carefully watching the skies, but is this difficult to do? Do clouds roughly follow gusts, or do gusts pass by clouds? Any more sources for detailed information on spotting wind speed changes?

If the water is fairly flat you can also see darker patches of water where there is a gust (less relevant for sea sailing)

Thanks very much for the response. I didn't consider that the cloud itself could affect the wind. This is quite useful and a good starting point. I'll check the book out as well.

+914050a Here's what Penny said:

"Clouds are formed by the weather system and therefore travel with it. The clouds are a visible sign of what is happening to the air and you have different types of clouds at different heights all showing different things. In relation to low level puffy clouds (cumulus clouds) they create their own wind; air rises under them as they form (so more wind at the edges as it is sucked in) and wind comes out of them when it rains from them. They in turn travel downwind with the gradient wind.

There are loads of good books about weather but in relation to sailing and weather a good one is 'Wind Strategy' by David Houghton and Fiona Campbell."
