โถ Check out my gear on Kit: https://kit.com/followtheboat Our PATREONS voted, and they are sending us to the Pacific NorthWest via JAPAN! ๐ If you enjoyed this video, please LIKE, COMMENT, SHARE & SUBSCRIBE, your feedback gets us noticed by YouTube and helps people discover us! Thank you. Wow, can't believe that last December our friends on PATREON, YouTube and Facebook started to suggest Canada via Japan as a destination, and now we're going there. We looked into it, did some research and a bit more research, and realised it could be quite an adventure... So it's goodbye to shorts, t-shirts and flip-flops, and hello to foul weather gear, jumpers and boots! Now we have to prepare SY Esper for a long, long trip, and get her in the best possible condition. She's being re-rigged in July/August. Then there are lots of safety additions we need to make, as well as comms etc. We also need to add a hard dodger which can be fully enclosed and a heating system. Getting to Japan is the hardest bit of the passage plan. Weather, currents, monsoons, typhoons and piracy are all obstacles we need to work round. The original idea of avoiding the Philippines and going straight to Hong Kong has been thrown out (at the moment) because it is a long, arduous uphill struggle. So the next option is to head back to Tioman, Perhentians and Anambas, then round the top of Borneo. After that, to drop down to Sulawesi before heading to the southwestern corner of the Philippines where we will cruise until the wind changes for our trip north to Japan. VERY rough timings: 2019 May - Tioman/Redang/Perhentians June - Anambas/Natuna/Kuching July - Borneo/Brunei August - Borneo September - Sulawesi November - Philippiines 2020 Apr/May - Okinawa/Yokohama July - Leave Japan for Alaska/Canada We will be posting videos about our plans as they unfold. He is an awesome guy doing a lot of cruising around the colder areas of Canada

The guy is somewhere around Vancouver and is pretty handy.

Maads (yes, it's his name) is VERY meticulus at refitting his boats. As a matter of fact, he his in the middle of is second boat refit. A must see !
I try to soak every bits of information about boat refit. It give me good ideas to apply to my own boat.
I liked every minutes of the refit of ESPER and I am looking forward for your next improvements.
Cheers and good winds !

I watch WAY too many sailing chennals, and all in the tropics or south Africa, but soo looking foward to to adventure.
Can you bring lazy cat?
Hopefully you can plan a couple of "meet ups" down the West Coast of the US !

Not Personally but there is a YouTube channel called Sail Life.
He is a live aboard with his dog. Obelix is the boat he lives on Athena is the boat he is currently doing up itโs bigger he has done hundreds of videos but he did one on his heating system in Obelix and he lives in Denmark so itโs quite cold there in the winter so that might be worth your while to have a look his logo is a red disc with their white yacht. Actually if youre not planning on south pacific after northern you would be missing so much.
Its really magic cruising in south pacific. Its what dreams are made of.
My guess would be you might skip it cause of the circumnavigation.
That would be a sacrifice for sure.
You could do hawaii from japan. Tahiti from hawaii but that just loops you back to australia or newzealand.
Just sayin.

sailing/delivering a boat from the Pacific NW to somewhere in your general area for its new owner, a charter outfit somewhere in the S/E Asia area. Not sure exactly how close but, your general area of the world. They are going clockwise around the Pacific, and may have left Mexico by now. Not sure. I believe the boat has a diesel heater. If they're going to remove it, you may be able to pick it up. The whole system. Just a thought.

We spent one year on a refit, the other three years have been spent sailing. Have you watched our videos?
This is our third long passage, and we know we would be negligent not to prepare properly.
Happy sailing! โ๏ธLiz
As for heating I think diesel is definitely the way to go. I used to have a Dickinson Antarctic stove on my old boat, it was lovely looking at the flames through the glass window. However, I would think twice about a drip feed diesel heater like that (or refleks etc) for a long passage as they can suffer with blow back if its too windy and you have to be careful with positioning as they don't like to be inclined (when healing) for long periods of time (assuming you want heat whilst sailing.
In my current boat I have a wallas blown air heater. It is brilliant, low currant draw, low fuel consumption, easy to service, very very quite in operation (not like an eberspacher jet engine) very safe as it draws combustion air from outside and during the warmer periods you can use it to suck in cooler air from outside and circulate it. The downside is that the initial investment is a bit pricey but in my opinion well worth it and you have to think about where you will run the hot air ducking. Keep up the good work :)
I love you 3 and wish you would take the long route. Live to beat into it another day.
If you get captured, don't worry we WILL pay the ransom : ]

And you are right, such things as heaters and insulation suddenly come to the fore. A dickinson diesel is the standard for a lot of folks here.
Anyway if you don't stop for more than a few days in the island's on route to Japan, and if you don't spend 4 years in Japan, you should be in Alaska or Canada by July/August 2019.
How does my guesstimate fit in with your timetable.
It has been said sailors start with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck. Clearly you are very experienced sailors and have almost filled your bag of experience. That said I would suggest you hang on to a little bit of luck for this journey.
I don't have much to contribute in the way of advice however as you are aware when considering a heat source factor in condensation and ventilation. Pacific crossing are long, cold and damp. Coming off watch to a damp cabin/bedding/clothes is just plain miserable. I won't mention mold and mildew. My home waters are in the pacific northwest and I heat my boat with a propane furnace (Cozy Cabin). I almost always leave a hatch or vent open to allow for air circulation. Seems to work for me. I am sure your vessel is equipped with more efficient ventilation. For safety I have propane sniffers, O2 sensors and CO2 sensors.
Also based on what I have seen from others making a pacific crossing redundancy, especially in your auto pilot technology is imperative.
When you make it to the west coast of BC, my home waters are in Sidney on Vancouver Island, and I would welcome the opportunity to buy you dinner. In the meantime I will follow your adventure online. Good luck!
By the way Japan is not expensive and you will also will get the 8% off everything you buy, just take your passport with you when shopping.
So yes we love to see you enjoying your world but as your taking all the risk, within reason.
Puerto Princesa & especially El Nido in Palawan
Maybe Cebu
Puerto Galera
Subic Bay & its Freeport Zone which used to be the biggest US military base outside mainland USA. That's where they ran the Vietnam war from.
A good stopping off point in the Northern Luzon is Bolinao.
The hear that Puerto Galera yacht club is full of very friendly yachties who were on their way to somewhere else...and never left.
I used to live in Subic Bay. There are perfect sailing conditions in the bay for a lot of the time. Flat seas and a smooth consistent warm breeze. My small factory was one of the first to set up there after the American military left in the early 90s leaving an airport, port, dockyard, bunkers (some of which had housed nuclear weapons), hotels, 1200 houses etc. Check out:
Consummare - a reincarnation of my old company, now owned and run by my ex-staff. Superb products and workmanship. (Google 'consummare subic') Talk to Ralen or Angie who will be happy to show you around.
The old Naval Magazine area (virgin triple canopy rain forest)
Ocean Adventure (try to see Scott Sharpe who is a world authority on Dolphins etc).
Go to the Aeta village (the aboriginal people who look like Kalahari bushmen will give you a jungle survival tour).
The housing areas of Binictican & Kalayaan originally built by the Americans.
Olongapo (the local town)
For me, videos that are more technical and gear-intensive are the most interesting so for me your upcoming videos will be even more interesting for me as you change gears and focus on this new goal. I do love the DIY and upgrade aspect the most, being a gear-head. So many of my own choices when refitting our own boat came from watching your videos.
Once you do leave it will be neat to see you visit new places constantly and to see how the upgrades and preparations you made work in practice. Once we leave full-time ourselves on our own boat I will have to seriously pare down the YouTube channels I watch because of more limited internet, but yours will always be the first one I want to want to watch when I get the chance. Well, you Sail Life, at least until Mads is done with his own long refit of Athena, as I can't get enough of that type of content.
That's just one example where I have learned from the stuff you have done and have shared with us viewers on YouTube.
Cheers Warren
Not too many sail boat on youtube goes to that area
