Lead on Long Tack - Laser Sailing Tips (International Sailing Academy)

Layline tactics should start becoming a priority/focus before approaching them. Avoid arriving early to the layline generally, since this will limit options and potential for further gain. Excess time on layline can result in wind changes or tactical penalties, almost all unfavorable: • Header: Results in wasted distance sailed while opposite tack boats gain • Lift: Results in overstanding, possibly VMG penalty, wasted distance sailed • Tactical Penalty: A boat or group of boats may tack on you At some point, if positioned to leeward or “leading boats” on the short tack, you’ll begin to consider the layline. Don’t wait for that “miracle shift” to cross the boats to windward. Instead, tack early so they’re not as tempted to tack on you. Avoid the layline “train” and enjoy a great lane below for the majority of the sailing distance back towards the rhumbline/mark. If there are too many boats to boats to windward, it might not be possible to get a lane with clean air below layline and options are limited. In that case, consider continuing past starboard layline. Make sure to go far enough so others are not tempted to go that far, and you can continue in clean air all the way to the mark. Consider wind speed and air temperature, since both effects the area of disturbed wind. Also, consider wind speed and the efficacy of a lower mode in that particular velocity.
