Atticus is off on an expedition sailing to the offshore Atolls of Belize! In this episode we leave Caye Caulker for Turneffe, one of only four Atolls in the western hemisphere and something truly unique in the Caribbean. While sailing to Turneffe Jordan practices many of the skills necessary to single-hand Atticus without the engine and Desiree introduces us to her new underwater pets! While Cruising Belize we also roll out our soon to be famous sundowner drink, the "Don't Panic!" Did you like this video? Please don’t forget to give it a thumbs up, it helps us out a lot! I see your on an a Ketch, I just got one. How do you sail it? I read mizzen is first up and last down? I have read start at the mizzen and work forward. Then I also heard start mizzen and go Genoa......???? I read about a guy that has brought 3-4 ketches across the Atlantic to the US, he said he only used mizzen and genoa, never used main once! i don’t know what to do.

A ketch rig for single handed sailing (let alone voyaging) is just a pain in the butt anyway …
Fuck man ! … I sailed, mostly single handed, for five years on my ketch : I know ! It really IS a pain in the ass. You have to manage at least three sails instead of two. I had to manage 4 because the mainmast mas a cutter rig !… A lot of work, particularly in coastal cruising.
So much a pain that I switched to a sloop.
As for "voyaging" get an education man ! The internet is not the only way of being informed. As a sailor you should learn from the old times.
The greatest in the English speaking world is Eric C Hiscock who wrote numerous books of sailing which are still a trove of informations and advice, among which his book "Voyaging under Sail", which followed "Cruising under Sail". Not only the man is nice and fun to read, but, although some is necessarily outdated, you learn so much from them that one of these books should be on all live aboard sailors' shelves.
Voyaging tells as much as blue water sailing and it is used.
Cheers ! Have a good sailing and try to listen to what people tall you : this is one of the recipe for nothing through bad mishaps when sailing. Don't tell me I'm uniformed on that one : I know by hard learned experience !… ;)
And as far as your assessment on a ketch being a "pain in the butt" for passage making or offshore cruising (sorry, nobody I know uses the term "voyaging"), you're clearly uninformed.
Careful of those 'Don't Panic''s they seem to cuase bruises on your neck.

REMOVE your fishing rods from the HOLDERS at NIGHT (in a marina or not) and when you go ASHORE.
They sometimes find a way of 'jumping ship' (ala someone who doesn't have one).
Just sayin'.
I recognized some of the scenes as you walked down the white sandy beaches. It brought back fond memories. You guys rock!
Still in awe of the quaility.

Now if you'll excuse me as I go dig a fox hole to prepare for an imminent anchor flame war...
A suggestion for dropping your anchor under sail would be to heave-to instead of heading into the wind. When you head into the wind, you still have to have a second person at the helm to keep the boat into the wind, otherwise you're on borrowed time to get the anchor down. Being "hove-to" will keep the boat (almost) stopped and stable while you drop the anchor, eat a sandwich, make a repair, etc.
To "heave-to", get on a close haul, then tack to the opposite close haul without moving your head-sail. This will cause it to be back-winded. Turn back into the wind just slightly (so that you're just right inside the no sail zone), and you'll notice that your boat slows significantly and may even come to a complete stop.
In this configuration, the head sail and rudder are opposing each other so you'll remain more or less sitting still. Lock the rudder in place and you can stay like this indefinitely while you drop the anchor, eat a sandwich, take a nap, make a repair, etc.
please remove your snorkel from your mouth when diving. you can easily drown if you accidently take a wrong breath or start to run out of air.
desiree, you can film yourself instead of jordan anytime :-)
and finally jordan, well done on your trying to solo sail so as to be able to teach desiree. smart.
I wanted a zip up type and this was the only one I could find (can't stand pullover products)
Cheers warren
And real story with proper paper charts.
