Learning to Single-hand | Sailing to an Offshore Atoll & Cruising Belize | S03E05

Atticus is off on an expedition sailing to the offshore Atolls of Belize! In this episode we leave Caye Caulker for Turneffe, one of only four Atolls in the western hemisphere and something truly unique in the Caribbean. While sailing to Turneffe Jordan practices many of the skills necessary to single-hand Atticus without the engine and Desiree introduces us to her new underwater pets! While Cruising Belize we also roll out our soon to be famous sundowner drink, the "Don't Panic!" Did you like this video? Please don’t forget to give it a thumbs up, it helps us out a lot! I just re-watched this episode and am harkening back to watching your Belize atol vids. One them, maybe the next one perhaps, you guys snorkel in what is the largest reef I've seen. Those are some of my favorite videos by you guys, true adventuring. Alas, I've got a 5'6" keel so cannot go to the same atolls? A year later and having been inspired by the two of you I live on my new (to me) first sailboat. She's a dream, a Pacific Seacraft 37' that I hope to sail down to Panama and then head to west just as you are about to do to Polynesia and a trade wind circumnavigation. But, I'll start with Baja, Sea of Cortez, mainland Mexico and Central America. I solo sail Coconut currently off San Diego and liked your tenacity to get it down to a workable solo system on your boat. Quite important in case one of you is ever incapacitated for some reason (I hope not) or, as in this video just to give the other a day to relax. I'll know if you've stuck with me as here is where I suggest you provide me a way to make a donation without using Patreon (Venmo)? As I can't possibly subscribe to all the sailing channels, I find Patreon a pain in the frickin ass but, I would like to send you guys a "thank you" occasionally. You may be on your way across the Pacific by now? I watched you fix your mast in Panama last week. Keep it up you inspire many!

@Sailing Project Atticus I just sent a little green love your way. No need to reply again. Between the ~10 sailing channels I watch I donate randomly rather than monthly. The idea of packing winter clothes in some of the boat's cushions is great. Even as a single live aboard on a 37' it fills up fast.

I like that you kept the old bronze winches when you did the refit. That small diameter handle on the winch handle looks dangerous though. If one of you fell, you could impale yourself on it. You could make a handle out of UHMW or nylon or even wood, which had a larger diameter, especially on the top. Just sayin'. So nice to see Atticus doing what she does best - trucking along, eating up those miles.

Hey guys! We have 2 x15 gallon water tanks down below, and 3 x 5 gallon jerry cans. When we're rationing, we each use about 1 liter of water per person per day for showering. We use salt water for everything else, except we do rinse our dishes with a spray bottle of fresh water. Then we each drink about 1 gallon of fresh water per person per day. I can't wait to assemble and install our water maker, haha! Hope that helps! -Desiree

I went to Caye Caulker in about 1995, I was about 20 years old and there was not much there!

I see your on an a Ketch, I just got one. How do you sail it? I read mizzen is first up and last down? I have read start at the mizzen and work forward. Then I also heard start mizzen and go Genoa......???? I read about a guy that has brought 3-4 ketches across the Atlantic to the US, he said he only used mizzen and genoa, never used main once! i don’t know what to do.

Single handed ??… look at 5:43 !!!…
A ketch rig for single handed sailing (let alone voyaging) is just a pain in the butt anyway …
vincent7520
vincent7520 - 6 years ago
I am uninformed ???…
Fuck man ! … I sailed, mostly single handed, for five years on my ketch : I know ! It really IS a pain in the ass. You have to manage at least three sails instead of two. I had to manage 4 because the mainmast mas a cutter rig !… A lot of work, particularly in coastal cruising.
So much a pain that I switched to a sloop.

As for "voyaging" get an education man ! The internet is not the only way of being informed. As a sailor you should learn from the old times.
The greatest in the English speaking world is Eric C Hiscock who wrote numerous books of sailing which are still a trove of informations and advice, among which his book "Voyaging under Sail", which followed "Cruising under Sail". Not only the man is nice and fun to read, but, although some is necessarily outdated, you learn so much from them that one of these books should be on all live aboard sailors' shelves.
Voyaging tells as much as blue water sailing and it is used.

Cheers ! Have a good sailing and try to listen to what people tall you : this is one of the recipe for nothing through bad mishaps when sailing. Don't tell me I'm uniformed on that one : I know by hard learned experience !… ;)
Rob S
Rob S - 6 years ago
Jordan didn't attempt any single handed sailing practice until after 8:15.

And as far as your assessment on a ketch being a "pain in the butt" for passage making or offshore cruising (sorry, nobody I know uses the term "voyaging"), you're clearly uninformed.

Hank on sails on the jib, non self tailing winches, and a hand held compass. May not be the most modern but it is all serviceable. It means you are sailing. You guys rock. Good music too. I only have one thing to say. Don't go around picking up anchors and resetting them. You can get your hand caught between the chain and the anchor when a wave catches the boat and gives it a jerk and it will be a terrible way to drown. It's not worth it. Love you guys.

I'm not sure that anchoring a boat by yourself after sailing is that difficult. All you do is sail up into the wind, loosen the sheets and let go of the steering so the sails are luffing, wait until the boat has stopped moving forward and drop the anchor. Then you can take down the sails. There shouldn't be any need to take the sails down first.
Rob S
Rob S - 6 years ago
Early on in my sailing career (no money = POS sailboat = no motor), I did a lot of experimenting dropping the hook under sail, including what Emily is suggesting. An OK technique, until an overlooked current is traveling faster than the wind you’re attempting to anchor in, spinning the boat, back-filling the jib, and pinning you up against the lifeline. OR, in the case of a POS sailboat without lifelines (yes, it didn’t have those either), tossing you overboard. Got the shirt, no thank you, headsail was dropped from there on out.
Emily BH
Emily BH - 6 years ago
Sure, but all my life since I was little I sailed boats to their moorings, never using an engine my entire life, usually with both sails up. The luffing jib doesn't make it easier to pick up the mooring or anchor but it is perfectly doable, just as long as you figure out which side of the jib you are going to be on while you anchor and the anchor is on the same side. If the sail flutters or slaps against you, it isn't the end of the world. It is only for a few minutes. If you are truly headed into the wind the jib shouldn't pose a problem or really be that much in the way.
Sailing Project Atticus
Sailing Project Atticus - 6 years ago
Don't you think the jib would be in the way? If your head to wind the head sail would be flogging all over the foredeck right where the windlass is.
Emily BH
Emily BH - 6 years ago
If you need it to keep the boat headed up into the wind I am. You can always drop the jib right after the anchor is in the water. At least that is what I would do. I would hate to have a boat which can't point without a jib not have its jib up while I was trying to anchor and have something occur where at the last minute I had to veer away and not be able to react quickly enough because I'd take the jib down. If the jib is still up, all you'd need to do is grab it with your hand while you were on the deck and backwind it to move the bow to one direction or the other to turn the boat. No other steering needed.
Sailing Project Atticus
Sailing Project Atticus - 6 years ago

Great vid guys. Love the channel! Don’t wait until you are perfect with the single handing before giving Desiree her shot. Love how you guys are learning the “right way”. One suggestion would be to trim the bottom tip of the dead cat though. It’s quite distracting for video geeks. Another option is to get it higher off the camera. I rigged a video light with a cold shoe on top to do this years ago. Having a simple hot shoe vid light can help with fill for harsh shadows on bright days too. Also helps open up faces and see the person in front of the sunset. Also looks like you have some dust on the sensor. Google sensor cleaning. If you haven’t already. Sending love your way. Keep at it you guys rock!

REMOVE your fishing rods from the HOLDERS at NIGHT (in a marina or not) and when you go ASHORE.

They sometimes find a way of 'jumping ship' (ala someone who doesn't have one).
Just sayin'.

Rule #3, always wear your offshore harness and tether yourself to the boat -always. In 40°-50° water, you only have 1-3 hours before death (hypothermia). In 60°-70° water, < 40 hours before death.

So who knew there were real atolls in the Caribbean? What a great day of sailing. I still can't get over diving on anchors...... or even it moving under water!!! Most of my anchoring has been in muddy and silty water.... magical video ...except for the heat..... cheers Warren

nice video. met you guys on Isla. Mentioned thin sand over coral experience I had at anchor years ago at Tulum If you have trouble anchoring, try a danforth. I know they don't reset as well when pushed beyond 90 degrees, but from personal experience at Tulum with thin sand over coral an undersized danforth on my boat held better than a guy that had two large CQR's set as he dragged during the night of a 30 mph plus blow one night. We held just fine on rode with 30 feet of chain. I had a westsail 32 at the time with if memory serves a 15 pound dandforth. I think it was Nigel Caulder in his book recommended the danforth for such conditions. (it was not my idea stole it as with many other ideas) Nice video. glad to see you guys escaped the draw of Isla which is a great place to get trapped. Love the place.

I really like the anchor testing done by YouTuber SV Panope. He's a cruiser, and has put out the most 'real world' comprehensive anchor testing I've come across, including a 180 degree wind/current shift. Here's his testing of a CQR at a 3.5 to 1 scope.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFXaY679bqQ

You can find the rest of his anchor test vids here:

Yep. State of the art 40 years ago. Bruce started a debate when they came out if I recall correctly. Have 2 large bruce on my current boat but have three danforth as well. One is at least 40 pounds. One is a lunc hook the other not sure. They came with the boat. Guy spent lots of time in the Bahamas.

Yeah, I put a CQR right up there with a coffee can filled with concrete and an eye bolt for rode.

Now if you'll excuse me as I go dig a fox hole to prepare for an imminent anchor flame war...

Great job!

A suggestion for dropping your anchor under sail would be to heave-to instead of heading into the wind. When you head into the wind, you still have to have a second person at the helm to keep the boat into the wind, otherwise you're on borrowed time to get the anchor down. Being "hove-to" will keep the boat (almost) stopped and stable while you drop the anchor, eat a sandwich, make a repair, etc.

To "heave-to", get on a close haul, then tack to the opposite close haul without moving your head-sail. This will cause it to be back-winded. Turn back into the wind just slightly (so that you're just right inside the no sail zone), and you'll notice that your boat slows significantly and may even come to a complete stop.

In this configuration, the head sail and rudder are opposing each other so you'll remain more or less sitting still. Lock the rudder in place and you can stay like this indefinitely while you drop the anchor, eat a sandwich, take a nap, make a repair, etc.
Christopher M
Christopher M - 6 years ago
Interesting, that would take a lot of practice but I can see how it would be easier once you get it down. TBH, I've only finished ASA103 this year and am still practicing/learning maneuvers. Thank you for sharing the tip, I'm going to try this next weekend.

Two Buds in paradise..... wonderful. It was good to see you using the mizzen sail and I do wonder how Atticus handles with just the foresail and mizzen and no mainsail. I imagine that she would be well balanced and on a broad reach you could add the mizzen staysail into the mix. Very wise to practice as a single hander....... you never know when that might be an essential skill.

Read the title and thought, wait, Desire is doing a single handed offshore? Nice job but man the 6 inch clearance to keel in some areas would have me gulping. Boat is looking good but had me wondering. I love the look of the ketch over a sloop but does the split rig help or hinder especially single handed? Happy trails

Jordon, something you might want to try when sailing/anchoring/ headsail doused/going to windward situation, is to have your mizzen sail flying. It might give you a little more propulsion and rearward center of effort to close haul that last leg. Also, remember to pop loose the sheets for the mail and mizzen once you drop the hook so the boat doesn't try sailing off your intended location...and remember that the booms can be swinging, heads up.
