I can not wear DEET, it burns my skin. I have found that picaridin works great and is not irritating. I love "Sawyer Products Premium Insect Repellent with 20% Picaridin." I buy a couple bottles at a time from Amazon and would recommend it to anyone.

I live in Malaysia, where we have mosquitoes thru the year. Mosquitoes are attracted by the CO2 in your breath and then zoom in on your heat signature for the last couple of feet.

A cheap and effective natural way of catching mozzies is to get 2 litre plastic "pop" bottle and cut the top off so that it becomes a funnel that you invert on the bottom section. Cover the bottle with a black paper or card board tube so it's dark inside. Get some yeast (about a teaspoon full) and some sugar about 2 teaspoonfuls and mix these in the bottle with some warm water about a pint. Invert the top bit of the bottle (the funnel) and put in the open end of the bottle. Put this out in place that's not too breezy and watch the mozzies head for it! Check the contents by slipping the black tube up and you should be able to count the mozzies! Replace as necessary. Usually twice a day. Set up a few of these outside your cabin and the mozzies will head for this before they go below.

No poisons, no oils, not at all messy and totally natural.

Let me know how it goes!

These videos are fantastic - educational and so funny! I love your ingenuity with the weighted screen over the companionway. I do sympathise though; there's nothing so irritating as any kind of insect treating you as its next meal. Backpackers.. head netting for outside... My only added idea. They collapse to nothing for storage.
SailingBritican
SailingBritican - 7 years ago
Yeah...head netting is a good idea. I just can't get over the look of it. Imagine a beautiful sailboat cutting through the sea. The wind is strong, the sun is high and the surrounding area is tropical. You're totally sinking into the spirit of letting nature do it's thing and then when the people in the boat come into focus you see that they're all wearing head netting. BAM... spoils the whole scene. Hehehehe. But you're right Frank...it collapses to nothing and it is very helpful. Thanks for commenting :) K.

Hi - You can get them almost everywhere, comes in tablet, powder and crystal form. You take them like vitamins, assist with skin issues but it produces a sent that bugs can't stand but humans can't smell.

As said before skin so soft, when I lived in Australia was told use johnson baby oil mixed with tee tree oil. The idea is they cant penentrate because you are to oily so they slip about then give up. Not so sure it always worked but my skin was great!

SailingBritican - 7 years ago
That's funny Al. I think there's something about the oil..the Mosquitos just can't land. Hehehe. They slip right off. Thanks for the comments. K.

We get them pesky little b@#$rds here in SC my wife's been looking on the tinternet for all sorts of different alternatives!

Vic's vapor rub was one example she came up with !

Rub it all over and you'll have clear nasal passages for hrs trust me I done this for a few day's I could breath like a champion !

But it didn't deter the little beggars !

Also if yr at a grocery store you'll have all the folks with colds and blocked noses coming up to just sniff you !

I thought it strange at first but I got used to the closeness of folks !

I think she's going to try the eucalyptus, lemon and some other oils gawd only knows what I'll smell like and whom I'll attract at the grocery store !

P.S
I drink red wine and still get attacked..

SailingBritican - 7 years ago
You're cracking me up tilted_kilt_1642 BRB! I think that if you have any oil or anything with strong smell it might just work! Vic's vapor rub seems like a good one! Thanks for sharing :) K.

Guys, I'll bet you've been itching to get this vid out!  Good job.  Before you scratch it off your list, I would also suggest screen enclosures around the cockpit.  These are usually zipped into the dodger and bimini.  While these can be sewn by the boat owner, they are also designed by the sailmaker or dodger maker.  We are having both screens and "glass" panels make to zip into our dodger and bimini so that we can use our center cockpit as an extra room.  They can be expensive when made by a professional, but not having the pesky mosquito problem is worth it.  Fair winds from Doug on WS42 Harmony.
SailingBritican
SailingBritican - 7 years ago
Hey Doug...I'm loving your references to itching and scratching! Yeah - I was thinking that netting in the cockpit might be good. I have to say that for the most part it's windy enough at anchorages that we don't get mosquitos and it's nice to just have the unrestricted fresh air. I think that if I did have an enclosure made I'd enquire as to having two panels - one to enclose and one that's a screen so that you get 2 in 1. We have panels that zip onto our bimini that are sun guards and we use the often. Thanks for the comments! :) K

Can't recommend Skin So Soft enough. I grew up on a farm in Iowa and was outside all the time, I lived in Arkansas where you could put a saddle on a mosquito and ride it, and also lived in North Dakota where in the summer they are the State bird - Skin So Soft worked great in all those places. Also, avoid eating a lot of sweet fruits - melons, oranges, mangos etc., all that attracts mosquitos.

Eating a grapefruit a day kept the mosquitoes off me. When I don't eat them for what ever reason then I use baby oil and dettol mixed 75:25. the baby oil pulls into your skin fast and you don't leave oily marks on upholstery and sheets, you just smell of dettol but you get used to it and as a positive side effect those little scratches from small bumps etc don't get infected as often if you're in the tropics.
SailingBritican
SailingBritican - 7 years ago

Marmite is supposed to work (eaten, that is, not applied to the skin)
99loki
99loki - 7 years ago
I can't stand the stuff! but I read an account of an international expedition up the Amazon where the two British participants were eating large quantities, which astounded a Swede , who had assumed it should be applied to the skin. Chemical balance does seem to be important; on a walking holiday in Andalucia, the cook for our group put huge amounts of garlic in the food...I'm not keen, but didn't get a single bite from any insect, and there were plenty about.
SailingBritican
SailingBritican - 7 years ago
But who wants to eat Marmite?!?!?!? Kim (If it was Simon he'd say, 'yes - that's a perfect suggestion!)

I know this sounds crazy and I haven't tried it yet but, apparently, if you put listerine mouth wash in an atomiser and spray that on you, they hate it. I heard this from an Australian who swears by it, maybe it works, maybe he was drunk. Anything is worth a try with those pesky mosquitoes. If anybody tries this and it works let me know.
SailingBritican
SailingBritican - 7 years ago
Yes Darrin...I have that in my associated article (https://sailingbritican.com/mosquito-control-on-a-sailboat/) I think it's listerine and detol mixture?! I'm willing to give it a try :) K.
