On our way out, Moroccin’ about (Sailing La Vagabonde) Ep. 130

We sail west, along the northern Moroccan coastline. It’s all go go go right now, just making quick stops in every few ports so that we can make our exit out of the Mediterranean. New oceans are calling our names. We tie off the boat in another marina that’s pretty much deserted and head into the country on a road trip. I’ve always dreamed of visiting Morocco, to get lost in the ally ways and go spice shopping at the markets. I hope you enjoy this little adventure with us! Videos made with love, Elayna. Hi guys, from Victoria British Columbia.

You guys are inspiring to say the least. I love your videos and the obvious chemistry you two have. While our plans for sailing are not as ambitious as yours, it has moved us to set plans for our own “la vagabonde” if in your travels you find yourselves on the west coast of Canada, would love to show you guys the sites of our island.

Take care and good sailing

For those that don’t know, your hand drawn map at the start of the video could have indicated the ports of Mellia and Ceuta are in fact Spanish territories, not Morocco. Yes, you did mention in the following audio, but as drawn the sketch map was misleading. It’s a little bit of detail that many viewers would like to have had highlighted. Cheers

I'm sad... In the last few days, I have seen all your episodes from last year and until now. Enjoyed them a lot, but now I have to wait a little to see your fantastic adventure continue. You are really good at what you do and you have become my favorite channel on youtube. I envy you guys the life you have at times. For now, I will have to follow your dream and live my own a little bit later. Love from Norway

Have seen quite a few of your video entries from the comfort of my Calgary condo in the last few days. I've learned a lot and wonder in your reading if you've read many of the great classic sea novels, such as, Sea Wolf by Jack London, Lord Jim by Joesph Conrad and Two Years before the Mast by Richard Henry Dana. I love the openness you have in sharing your journey not only with us but with your many on board guests. I appreciate your taste in music as well. God Bless.

I have a daughter I named Elena, and I have been drawn to sailing since I was a preteen. I am 51, and still an artist, photographer, graphic artist, you name it. If it creative and I can physically do it, well it is part of my being. When you left the Beneteau, and moved onto an easier way of life the both of you became much more less interesting, creative. I feel and know, the more you have, the easier life becomes, the more of what make's you special, unique you end up losing. You haven't evolved, your videos need to focus on the 50-60 and older. Or you need the struggle, the "nothing is impossible" mentally only youth push forward your own evolution towards happiness, and life's satisfaction.

A perfect introduction and acclimatization to Moroccan culture before venturing into the heart of the country, a rebellious yet gentle little town where you could drink the spring water, and have a hammam (bathhouse). Love your site. I know you get a lot of questions but I want to buy a boat but don’t know how to sail. I raised two kids and there out of the house now so I’m looking. Should I buy a small 22’ and learn and then get a 40’ (size I want ). Or just get the larger one. My goal is to sail around the world in 5 years. Thanks

Carys no! Riley bought the first vaga in italy or greece if I remember. Then they sailed the med before crossing the Atlantic and cruise the caribbean for a while. After that it was panama canal, pacific ocean, french polynesia and eventually new zealand where they left the boat. They flew to France to take possession of the new vaga and have now cross the Atlantic for the 2nd time. Videos are a month or two behind.

Welcome guys to Morocco, just to clarify few things here, well you can notice that there too much checkpoints in Marinas, also on the roads etc, I want you to know that Morocco- Spain borders are two different continents borders too, and getting in to Morocco should be registered and so on, as there so much illegal things happening across these borders, like smuggling Hash, illegal immigration, watching out any kind of terror acts, as you know Morocco is the safiest country in northern Morocco, it s because of the hard work of the authorities etc. So I hope you were not bothered by all these instructions which banning drones without permission is one of them, and have a great time in Morocco.

Interesting your option for the music in the beginning of this video and the little bird. The music originally is from a Brazilian’s old compositor called “Altamiro Carrilho” and the music, “Carinhoso” is popular known as “Tica-tico no fubá” which means the little bird “Tico-tico” playing over the corn meal, recalling bucolic old time farms in the interior of Brazil’s! Great pick! Cheers mate!

Riley I've been wanting to say this for some time I may have hinted in the past but this is a performance catamaran yeah that's the reason why it has tillers yeah when you want to fly haulers you should be on the tillers not the helm you're developing a bad habit just please try it once or twice when you're going fast and you think you might fly a holler, get on the teller mate please... That's why they put them on this boat you're not there for nothing you need to figure out sooner than later you can do it come on

I think I have watched every single episode from the start in the past two years, and I am just as engaged and entertained as I was at the beginning. I hope you are selling lots of boats for Outremer, you have set the standard for blue water cruising and transoceanic adventures. When I was a small boy I watched SeaSpray on TV. I loved that and I love what you are doing.
Abe Swells
Abe Swells - 6 years ago
Michael Garlick . And let's not forget that there are quite a lot more ocean cruisers and liveaboards that do not post and broadcast their adventures than cruisers who do post.
And some of those who don't post, have set the standard pretty damned high. They just don't say much about what they do. Their choice !
Kevin Costner
Kevin Costner - 6 years ago
Michael Garlick setting a standard for making video and documenting there voyage i agree. But lets not forget the ones who set the standard for blue water cruising. Its not la vega and that was my point. And i am positive they would agree.
There are lots of sailing channels and most offer some good entertainment. For sure la vega is at the top of the video chain though i have lost lnterest and usually watch a episode every now and then to see if anything has changed. I assume once they get on there planned voyage it will be entertaining again. Thats just my opinion. And what kind of content interests me.
Michael Garlick
Michael Garlick - 6 years ago
There are many sailing channels on YouTube posting videos of their adventures. Riley and Elena have set the standard in that they are genuine, their global voyages are real and they have genuine passion for what they are doing. I believe who we see in these videos is who they actually are. Their sailing skills are always improving and they have been the motivation for many others to give sailing a go. As a former naval officer, an experience that took me to Antarctica, I learned to sail in whalers and cutters - old school sailing. I have sailed many boats including in racing in California and in New Zealand and I have served on the bridge of a number of ships so I know this subject. I enjoy watching their learning curve and their experiences. and wish them all the very best for the future.
Kevin Costner
Kevin Costner - 6 years ago
Michael Garlick i like these guys too but i think you laid it on a bit thick there dude. Setting the standard for blue water cruising is a tall order. How about they are the best looking couple sailing around the world.because other than that they are babies and not really grown up yet . But if you take how far they have come in 5 years i give them a A plus.

Sorry about using too many words saying: LIVE!

What you are calling Al Maghreb seems to be El Hoceima on Google Maps and what is really crazy is the current satellite image view shows a white catamaran docked exactly as you were.  Too blurry to say it's La Vagabonde but the few other boats in view 08:50-to-08:55 are exactly the same, such as the sole sailboat tied at an angle to a finger and the blue and grey vessels tied to the outer quay.

You guys eat a similar diet as i do. Ive been mentally and visually planning my future sailing trip and came accross some potentially handy info, that evolved into a theory on how to keep food longer, you might be able to use. You can buy a dehydrator for around $20usd. From what ive read, you can dehydrate then rehydrate certain fruits and veggies. I currently have some stuff in the dehydrator and am going to test it out. The jist is to soak preferred fruit/veggies in a bowl of water, to rehydrate, which may be particularly good for smoothies and cooking. I have also taken into consideration that the humidity can be quite strong. To keep dehydrated goods dry, you could add a couple silica packets (those packets found in most powdered foods/vitamins) inside the containers. Again, ill test this theory of mine out and report back. You can also dehydrate and powder certain items and add said powder into smoothies. One thing i do to ensure vitimin C intake, is collecting pine needles (some are poisonous, so research To identify), dehydrating them, powdering them, and adding 1tsp in water every day. Pine needles contain the highest source of bioavailable vitamin C. I'm also going to try dehydrating other things like: tofu, nut milks/coconut milks, vegan cheeses, etc. Anyways, Your videos are great and lovely as always! Much love!

I bet seeing dolphins never gets old. I saw a couple in Ireland. At the cliffs of Moher and "Fungi" in Dingle, a famous dolphin that hangs out in Dingle bay. My cousin and his two boys took me fishing just outside the bay in a small skiff. Fungi followed us out. I could have reached out and touched him he was so close. The sun was setting and the sea had six ft swells. The fish were hitting the hook with no bait. We caught a boatload. We got to our mourning ball just at dark and walked to his house where we cleaned cooked bad ate the fish. One of my life memories. My mom was born in Dingle. Anyway enough about me. You guys make sure to enjoy and appreciate all your "life memories". You certainly have way more than the average bear.

From the dolphins to the bird in the hand, great video but it seemed to end abruptly after being captured by ? the man. That's the way it ends quite often when you are in the wrong place (at any time). Hope all is well but as I said, that was a very abrupt ending. Not the usual it seems. An empty marina speaks volumes too... Safety is rule #1. Please stay safe and make great memories that will last a lifetime!

RE: Crossing the Channel: In heavy winds always carry less sail than you need and never wait too long to reduce sail or fly a storm jib. Better too soon than too late. Keep rocking it guys. Great Vlog as always. When I was a kid I lived in Gibraltar and visited Morocco at least once if not twice a month on a Royal Navy Fleet tender. Its a great country, friendly people and an amazing culture! My greatest memory was coming back from Morocco in a force 9. It was pretty exhilarating even for a young kid!

The sailing looked amazing! Good work with the hitchhiker, me being a prolific hitchhiker in me day. Looking forward to blue town. I live in Orange so I wonder if it's similar.
