Those are the bucket seats you sit in while steering with the tiller.

When I'm remembering right Riley from La Vagabonde choose this boat because of more space for 2 people and speed. This boat is not a swimming living room and made for people who enjoy the speed. In opposite to many 45 feet boats, this catamaran is making distance even in low winds.

If someone wants a complete protected helm Amel has the boats. But for me a swimming living living rooms are no alternative these Lagoon boats which are slow and heavy only . The Outremer is capable of running 10knots on average, has a low draft and all the space for 2 people. This gives the speed of outrunning bad weather and making distance.

There are two very different schools of thought... Comfort or Speed. Some people prefer the larger living spaces, and other prefer speed.

That is one of the downsides of dagger board boats. The boards take up a lot of internal space.

Nice video. I'd love to see one on a Lucia 40 as well. Preferably an owner's version. I suspect the interior space would be similar.

Could you actually measure the headroom in the salon where the ceiling curves down and the entrance to the cockpit. Outremer doesn't really give good headroom specifics. I didn't make it this year, but last year they only had the 5X and the dealer there was saying the 45/4x were much shorter in the headroom. I'm 6'3". I agree with the others, the lack of a place to stand watch with good sightlines from inside is a problem (and you aren't going to sit at the nav station for 4 hours in the middle of the night).

Mark, I think at 6'3" you would struggle on a boat like this...

I hate that it's a peeve of mine, but it is... put the price in the video or the description. You were doing so good. I don't want to have to ask every video.

I know I'm only one subscriber, but I'm a potential client in 2-3 years. It bugs me enough, I won't do business with places that don't publicly display prices. It gives me the impression they are sizing people up to give them a different price... I didn't buy my last ATV from a certain dealership for this very reason.
magentawave
magentawave - 6 years ago
Wiley Sharp Catamaran Expert That’s because the price depends on the level of stuff you get with it, such as electronics, sails, etc, etc.
Wiley Sharp Catamaran Expert
Wiley Sharp Catamaran Expert - 6 years ago
Once again... Sorry Chris... I didn't get a good sense of the boat's pricing from the dealer. Since i am not an Outremer dealer I can't sell these boats new. For my listings/brokerage boats I promote I do a pretty good job putting the price out there... I'm not trying to do the whole smoke and mirrors thing...
Wiley Sharp Catamaran Expert

Chris... To be honest... I don't even know the pricing... Ive heard everything from $800K to 1.1M... Rather annoying..

Not sure how much this one is but new Outremer 45's were starting at around $800,000.00 USD a year ago (I think). The Outremer is a very well thought out design that can out run hurricanes when necessary.

Robert Munafo, Absolutely. I will be much more well versed and have it narrowed down greatly within the next three years. I've been doing a ton of research.

I enjoy watching Wiley's videos and he's certainly in the running to be my broker when the time comes. I've asked him in previous videos to post the price. He said he would. I'm sure he forgot, and I'm mostly just giving him a hard time.

As a broker, I'd think you'd want to give people what they're asking for if it's reasonable. Also, the fewer places potential clients have to go to find info makes it less likely they'll find a different broker who WILL provide all the info upfront.
Robert Munafo
Robert Munafo - 6 years ago
A little friendly advice, take it or leave it. If you're serious about purchasing a yacht, yes, you most definitely would use a broker, but any broker worth his salt will provide you with a recent sales list of the particular brand and length of the used yacht you're looking to purchase. This gives you an exact idea of what has sold and how much over the last five or so years for that same type of boat. This will give you a lot better estimate of the expected price that you would be paying for a used boat versus what the listed asking price will ever give you.
Chris Rushing
Chris Rushing - 6 years ago
Robert Munafo, if you are looking for a boat like this, you'd get a broker, right? You'd expect your broker to tell you the price of any boat he shows you, no? Would you want your broker to show you a boat then tell you to go do research on how much it should cost, then make an offer accordingly? Come on man...?

Wiley is a Broker. His job is to show and sell boats. Part of that is to tell the price. If this boat isn't for sale, he can say the price range.

I'm going to be in the market for a catamaran in 3 years. Any broker I use will post the prices on the boats they show. I feel like sales people that don't put prices out are waiting for a sucker to come along so they can quote a higher price. I don't want to do business with people like that, plain and simple.
Robert Munafo
Robert Munafo - 6 years ago
I'm not so sure this particular Yacht is even for sale. Even if it were I'm a bit suprised why someone looking at this type of boat would not know the expected price. Generally speaking I would think someone buying this type of yatch would have price secondary to performance and they would be well versed on more important aspects.

asdfdfggfd, a lot of people have money by not spending all of it. I live in an area surrounded by millionaires and you'd never guess a single one of them made any more than a standard middle class income. Even though they can all afford this boat many times over, I'd guarantee every single one of them would ask how much it costs before purchasing.

I'd also surmise that oligarchs and lottery winners would buy something much more expensive than this boat.

Save your useless replies for someone else.
asdfdfggfd
asdfdfggfd - 6 years ago
This Yacht is in the category of... If price is a concern of yours you can't afford it... For price think... Wealthy oligarchs and lottery winners. You can get into a comparable 45' cat for a million dollars less than this one costs, but it wont do 20 knotts...

Another channel states life raft located for weight distribution? Are you serious! It’s a little life raft! If a 45 cat is that sensitive to weight, it’s no good for cruising, just posing in a Harbour.
John Davison
John Davison - 6 years ago
I read somewhere, Outremer put the life raft in the bow because an inverted cat sits with the stern under water due to the weight of the engines. The thought being, if she flips and the life raft is attached to the transom, you would have to swim down to get the raft. In the bow, the raft would be above or at the water line. It makes sense to me, but a capsize is only one scenario where you might have to abandon ship. Otherwise, getting a life raft over the lifelines could be a challenge.
Wiley Sharp Catamaran Expert
Wiley Sharp Catamaran Expert - 6 years ago
Catamarans are super sensitive to weight. I personally think they put the life rafts there because there is no other good place for storage on the boat.
magentawave
magentawave - 6 years ago
It is a high performance cruising cat so if you want to enjoy the speed and handling it's capable of then you must keep the weight down and be conscious of where you put it. That's the way it is with all multihulls though.

Not a fan of unprotected helms or ones where your only option is basically a tent, but I'm sure that's fixable with a bit of glass and stainless tubing. The rigging looked a little complicated, but that was probably just me trying to figure out where everything went. I know people will complain about the size vs cost, but for a short handed boat that is this fast, physics has certain limitations. I rather like the tiller seats, but I would have to take one out for a week and see how often I actually used them... I suspect rarely.

100% agree, it's just when you hit crap weather on transit that you wish you had something a bit more substantial than your hoody. I also travel with a very fair skin companion who likes the ability move around even if they forget a pound of sunblock... Although I suspect I just need to invent/install a shower based sunblock sprayer that automatically douses you after a shower.

I like the Outremer 45, but the unprotected helm is a deal breaker for a long term cruising boat. Watching La Vagabonde, you see Riley and Elayna are many time either being cooked in the sun or drenching wet from rain. Also, if I owned one for long term cruising, I would ditch the tillers and seats as well. I would rather have the extra space. For a day cruiser/racer the tillers would be fun and I could get by without weather protection at the helm. Thanks for the great walkthrough Wiley!

That's an interesting comment as it was one of my concerns as well. I know of the Balance range as well as a few other daggerboard cats but what other cat(s) would you consider that offer a little more in the performance aspect? I appreciate it's a tradeoff often between comfort/performance and sorry if it's a noob question.

La Vagabonde are planning to do high latitude sailing, iirc later this year or early next year, going to be pretty grim at that exposed helm in 30 knots of wind and the temp in the very low teens.

Great video Wiley, Lovely looking boat, but for me the extra few knots & closer to wind sailing you get as a performance boat are not worth the cost & loss in hull space. For 45 ft & as I get to be an older sailor, I'd want a berth at least semi walk around, instead of having to climb out length-ways & wider walkways in the hull (I'm a wide bloke!) Its that conundrum of space v performance. Who do you think balances that criteria the best? Possibly FP? Thanks.
Jim Connolly
Jim Connolly - 6 years ago
That's interesting as I always thought the same, Lagoon losing knots & upwind angle with its wide hulls and per foot of boat the most generous, spacious accommodation & most storage. Then I read this, with reports of Lagoons regularly winning the ARC (admittedly mostly downwind sailing). https://catamaranguru.com/brokerage/catamaran-reviews/the-cruising-catamaran-performance-debate

I think that FP does it the best, followed by Leopard, and then Lagoon.
