Paradise All to Ourselves— Sailing Uma [Step 163]

We had such a perfect sail on our way from Eleuthera to George Town. Stopped along the way on a remote island and had a paradise all to ourselves while waiting for the wind to shift. We ended our 80nm sail with a cherry on the cake, as we slowly entered the anchorage with our Spinnaker. I completely understand your description of the sunset at the end of the video. I travel a lot to the pacific islands (for work, not for fun, but...) and one place in particular is interesting, the atoll of Majuro, capital of the Republic of the Marshall Islands (a freely associated state of the United States). Many times I've seen this kind of sunset at the lagoon, have videos on drone and photos of sunsets, so I never forget about it. Thank you for sharing!

GREAT VIDEO !! I love how when I watch your videos I can almost feel like I am with you. It gives me A fleeting glimpse of a feeling that I’m actually they’re experiencing the beautiful beach you where hanging out on all day and that sunset on the bay with the boat lights in the distance. I also appreciate the fact that you don’t use your electric motor when the wind is down. But I have a different theory. I am re-fitting a sailboat to be all electric and have no sails. See, you use the power of the wind to move where I would use the power of the sun. And when the wind is down, the sun is shining bright and the seas are calm and that would be the perfect time to motor along at 4 to 6 knots. Look forward to seeing where you go and what you do next.

Why whenever I'm on a boat I wish I were ashore.  And whenever I'm ashore I wish I were on a boat?
urlkrueger
urlkrueger - 5 years ago
Question from a non-sailor: Most spinnakers I have seen are highly colored and patterned but most main and genoa sails are plain white. Any reasoning behind this?
Travelin' Tides
Travelin' Tides - 5 years ago
I believe the reason is most mainsails and jibs are made from Dacron whereas spinnakers are made from mostly nylon, Dacron is normally available only in white I think, where nylon comes in an array of colors. Hope this helps. :)

Wow. What to add to all the so positive comments here. I share Tom Williams' comment. I, as a youngster... no make it my whole life, dreamed of owning a sail boat, proudly showing it's spinnaker under the wind. Exactly like Uma and you two kids. Love you soooo much.
I follow you from the start of your adventure, and I must admit, with much envy. Young, free, talented and so creative. I may describe myself as a creative person, working all my life in graphic design, and as a sideline job, house design, mostly for local house builders. Ooooh, the hours spent in educating those well intended trade guys, not to follow their competition but try new, unique, out-of-the-box designs.
I'm an old geek now, but the dream of sailing south is still there. That's why I love and envy your voyage, your concept of "Not buying a couch" ! You do not want to report that to being 66 as I am now. Oh well... But I do now live my dreams through you. I cannot thank you enough.
BTW, I follow some other channels on sailing. But none, 0, nada, come even close to your absolutely awesome videos, the quality, the camera work and angles. We feel like being right there, with you. That is rare, professionnal work. Kudos and kisses, mes amis.
Fair winds.

+Sailing Uma, i always liked it on my power boat in Ontario as small fishing boats and logs are impossible to see at night. Also in rainstorms its helpful. I live in the DR now sailed from Luperon to Lauderdale last summer to sell it, and was there the same time as you, that boat had AIS which is great, however you can use radar to see any bobbing containers and to figure out if those big ships you see on AIS are actually going to cross your path. And if you get back to the DR let me know, i have a nice home with space in the mountains if you need a break.
Sailing Uma
Sailing Uma - 5 years ago
I really only think it’s needed in places with fog. We’ve been using it in the Bahamas to learn how it works, but it’s certainly not needed in the Caribbean. You can see the storms coming and other boats at night long before they pose a threat. If your only going to be sailing in areas without fog, I can think of many other things to spend $2k on.

As a small boat sailor, I'm curious. Why is downwind so preferred for cruising? I see very little beating on all my sailing channels. Just easier for navigation? Safer? I don't think I've heard "We'll be beating upwind to our destination" outside of a true NEED to do so. Keep up the inspiration!

+Sailing Uma Thank you!
Sailing Uma
Sailing Uma - 5 years ago
Waves. We’ve spent about 2/3 of our sailing miles going to windward. They call it ‘beating’ for a reason. The hull pounding into the waves makes you feel like your whole boat is going to come apart at the seams. We still prefer it to following seas which rock the boat back and forth. We actually don’t go down wind very often. And unlike many, find it to be the point of sail we try to avoid.

Have to say it, Kika your editing skills have grown by leaps and bounds. I go back and look at some of the early videos and there simply is no comparison to how polished they are today. Do you and Dan ever stop and think about how much personal growth your sailing has brought you?
Matt Evans-Koch

Kika and Dan,
That video went by too fast! Beautiful footage. Now back to work (bummer). Has anyone in the sailing community in the region considered submitting footage of the various sailings that are made by you guys and others to the tourist boards of the area? Real world footage is much more interesting than the scripted commercial stuff and you and some others are becoming more in the range of professional cinematographers than amateur documentarians. Just a thought. Have a good week guys.

I think a turtle moves faster than 2knots on land... LOL... I guess that's why God made me a biker and not a sailor.. I like to slow down and smell the roses along the way. BUT I don't want to take all day getting to where the roses are blooming... LOL... But now in my golden years of life I don't move as swiftly as I did 20 years ago. My motorcycle now has three wheels and I have a walker and cane... Ah yes the golden years of life, the best part is you don't have to grow up to enjoy them. The doctor told my wife that I was heading into my second childhood dew to the brain damage I had from the motorcycle wreck back in 2012. She told him no way could I be going into my second childhood the doctor ask her why she would say that? She told him that I never grew out of my first childhood yet!!! LOL... In life you grow older, BUT NO ONE SAID YOU HAD TO GROW UP!!! I remember my dad asked me when I was 40 when I planed on growing up and I just asked him WHY? and he just looked at me shook his head and walked away. He couldn't think of one good reason I should grow up. I had a AWESOME job making big money I owned two homes at that time, we had really nice trucks to drive I raised 2 awesome boys. And I didn't have to grow up to do any of that....
I'm sorry I got off course there. That the brain damage kicking in. oh well it took me 20 minutes to type it so it stays... LOL..
I love you kids and am praying for you... Keep having fun and be blessed... BBE..

Amazing spinnaker footage in this step. As I was writing this comment and realized that I did not in fact know how to spell the word 'spinnaker', I looked it up and found this interesting tidbit on Wikipedia; "A purported etymology has the first boat to carry this sail being a Cowes yacht named Sphinx, from which "Sphinx's Acre" and eventually "Spinnaker". Knowing that little piece of nautical trivia makes me feel just a skosh saltier than I did before ;)

I loved that little island! And my small outboard can propel my boat (when not under sail) at about the same speed as when I have a nice breeze. That kind of fits with the other sailboat (under power) going about the same speed as you while under sail. Plus I love your spinnaker! I've actually made my own (from a parachute) but have yet to fly it. Being single handed it's hard to change/drop sails. Good luck and fair winds to you!
