I have only just found this. What a great video. I am amazed at the viewing numbers. This should be compulsory viewing for anyone considering any coastal/offshore sailing. The lineup of contributors is awesome, and their combined experience and what they have shared is beyond priceless. I would recommend anyone to watch this at least 3 times to fully understand all the golden nuggets contained within. I am a RYA Yachtmaster Instructor and have tons of experience in all weather conditions with different types of yachts and have just increased my understanding of what controlling a boat really means in challenging conditions. Well done to the makers of this, you deserve a huge round of applause from the yachting community.

Really great with one caveat. A skier can NOT outrun an avalanche. Just sayin'

You're right, you can't outrun an avalanche but you can out ski it. Back in the day, we'd strap on the 240's and jump cornices. Your equipment, confidence, and expirence it can be done. Why, training because we knew that we couldn't outrun it but out ski it :) BTW, don't try it at home :)

Elite downhill skiers can indeed reach 80mph on a carefully prepared course that they have trained on, but of course (unlike an avalanche) they still have to turn corners. I guess if an Olympic gold medallist was chased down a mountain on a prepared course and the avalanche was considerate enough to follow the course rather than just steamrolling downhill, he might just survive. Seems a little unlikely to me but whatever. LOL

+Pete Griffiths Avalanches can reach speeds of up to 80 mph in 5 seconds! Like a cheetah! You can't ski that fast? lol
