Must be some voodoo around there, I was delivering a monohull there last month and the motor completely konked out, nothing would keep it going. Three blockages in the fuel lines and a stripped bleed bolt--thank you seller! So sailed back from around Palmas Del Mar to Puerto Del Mar from 9:30pm to 5:30am--thank you wind Gods. Good to hear yours was a minor/addressable issue. I much prefer cats for redundancy!

Sucks some of the secrets not shared by deceitful sellers! Glad things worked out! Redundancy rocks ; )

Brad, You may find me as talkative but I also want to ask " Do You have a Real/nice rifle or gun on your boat. I think You should have one. Cause, I am a follower of a few sailing boats like You . Some of them I watch lived difficult stuations/times which was annoying/stressful.

thanks. Too bad the rest of the world weren't as chill as Canadians seem to be. Lol I did watch Ep39 he was scared, I just don't know the right answer. I don't know where I would even find a gun at this point. I can't even find replacement parts for my GoPro camera lol!

+Sailing Trio Travels dear Brad, I understand you. You may be right as a Canadian ))) You are peaceful people. But world is not. Please, watch this on youtube when you have time " sailing vagabonde ep.39 and please look into the man,s eyes. So,so worried. And he is right to worry. But he had nothing to do if something was very bad.(I even don,t tell you about other cases I watched). God bless you.

Such a tough question. I don't have a good answer. The thought is scary either way. I don't know where to get a gun and at most stops customs takes the guns away. In the D.R. they really wanted to know if we had any guns aboard or not.
So the answer is we don't have a gun but I also don't have a good reason for why or why not. Every cruiser out here has a tough time with this question. People used to using guns seem to all have one and those not accustomed to using one don't, Regulations for Canadians are very strict as far as owning one and there are so many hoops to jump through so we've never owned one. I have friends that do and they are wild game hunters but I've never been hunting choosing to go fishing instead.
I didn't really answer your question but I think you can get the idea... Cheers

Hey! Right on! Once you drop the hook it's not much different except maybe the color of the water and the outside air temperature. We all check and re check the anchor, the weather and sleep while listening to the wind and any changes that might signal trouble while at anchor. It's always the same ; ) Stay in touch. Love hearing from across the pond. Cheers, Brad

Great video as usual. A few questions:

I like how you use paper charts and show your journey to the viewers. Maybe one day when your looking for something to talk about, you could explain your typical pre-planning process?

What do you use to know all the good places to go? (Books, Google, Forums, Recommendations from other cruisers...all of the above :) ). Then, do you have an ipad and plan using Garmin Bluecharts (my favorite for pre-planning and guesstimating fuel and time).

Thanks guys!
Sailing Trio Travels
Sailing Trio Travels - 7 years ago
+Douglas Montgomery Ya! I am loving that aspect of it and pretty much the only reason I bought it. Love the Active Captain stuff!

Sailing Trio Travels
Sailing Trio Travels - 7 years ago
+Douglas Montgomery
Hy Douglas! We actually just started using the Garmin Blue Charts on the iPad and love the app!
We have used only paper charts and books up to this point. We navigate with both paper and elecltoncic chat plotter. Once out here other cruisers share their advice, but as far as what we've seen it's really curious luck. We read a little and then go try and experience everything we can, we try to be adventurous but safe and it usually turns out well.
I like the idea of showing more of the pre planning process and will do just that as soon as my uploads catch up with our boat. Thanks for the comments and for following us along. Cheers Douglas! Brad

first thing to do.. try a new fuel filter. White smoke means that the diesel fuel is not burning correctly due to a lack of heat in the combustion chamber. This unburnt diesel contains minor toxins that may sting your eyes. This problem may be caused by: A clogged fuel filter.
Sailing Trio Travels
Sailing Trio Travels - 7 years ago
+Ivansgarage Turned out to be a low raw water flow. It was steam and not smoke. Once Gerry the mechanic cleared out the raw water exchange she runs clear and clean : ) Good news. I originally thought it could be a faulty injector and there was unburnt fuel but not the case. I've even built myself a fuel tank polishing system to keep my filters clean. Works really well and was a lot cheaper than having a guy bring his pump and do it. I think Ill try and do other's tanks along the way. Thanks for the help. Cheers. Brad

You should go back to your refit guy and blast him on the motor change. As much problems as you have had with engines being new correct? Unacceptable check the warranty and make sure you get details from repair on the issue, if they do nothing call the motor manufacture. White smoke indicates blown head gasket and could be from blockage on water intake plastic bags, seaweed etc. if you have a temp gauge on the motor you can watch it. If it's blockage don't put it on video hahaha no warranty for that :-) happy sailing wish I was there.

They weren't new when we bought the Cat. They are 2007 3YM30's with low hours. Still your'e right, things shouldn't be happening at such low hours. Turns out the raw water had a blockage that muriatic acid solved. Thanks

Hey Brad, yes Both ends of Vieques island were US Navy live bomb range. You don't want to drop anchor on those water. Population lives in the mid section of the island. There are still cleaning the ranges. Good choice on sailing at night through those waters. You were sailing against the current and wind direction. Best time is during night because is more calmed and wind changes more southerly because the land effect, air is heated by the land and wind blow from land to sea and you get a better angle from you apparent wind direction. Fajardo, great anchorage and that sandy beach is Palomino Island, the sandy beach scene of pirates of the caribbean was filmed on that sam spot you guys were. Hope you stopped at Culebra Island, that was my hangout place when I had my sailboat back in the 90's. Grants beaches, home of the Flamenco Beach on of the best 10 beaches of the world IAW Trip advisor. Also a good diving place (Punta Tamarindo Beach). I am sorry I missed you guys when you where here, I am sure we would have a great time. Well remember if you are stoping again here give me a call.

MISTERComaToes
MISTERComaToes - 7 years ago
oh boy! Brad, the white smoke coming from your engine is water entering the combustion chamber and flashing to steam. If the engine ran with the broken belt for lvery long it's possible that you MAY have blown a head gasket. Hopefully that is the extent of it. It could be a lot worse if the engine ran for too long but I would have thought your engine equipment would have included a engine overheat alarm!
Sailing Trio Travels
Sailing Trio Travels - 7 years ago
+MISTERComaToes
It does have the alarm. I got it turned off seconds after the alarm went off, but those alarms are at the high end of where they should be aren't they.
Just had a mechanic look at i,t and after all the reading I have done regarding my problem, your advice, and what the mechanic thinks, seems we've got a blown head gasket. Stay tuned, will know more soon.

5:42 "I hope it's not a "Lighthouse" ... reminds me of the old Navy joke wherein the Admiral tells the 'light' to9 give way .  When you cruise under power, do you do so running one or both engines?
Sailing Trio Travels
Sailing Trio Travels - 7 years ago
+Ken Lynch
We have been using both, one just doesn't push us along fast enough. At 2200 RPM with both engines running we burn about 1.25 gph and cruise along at 5-6 knots depending on wave and current. 2800 RPM burns 2 gph and gives us about 7 knots speed.

I am sure you folks know this now, but Vieques was a US Navy gunnery range for years (until 2003). There would be unexploded bombs and gun shells all around that place, even out several miles underwater.

You do know, Viequez Island, and it's environs, was a U.S.Navy  Live Bombing Range for like Thirty to Fourty Years right?  Great Vid though, I would have given that particular island a VERY wide berth.
Sailing Trio Travels
Sailing Trio Travels - 7 years ago
+daverjax While there a "cleaning crew" was clearing bombs from a couple of the anchorages and had closed them off to any boat traffic. Crazy.
Nik Leiser

My Father told me; white smoke means water in the Cylinder (atleast one Cylinder). Water goes through the Cylinderhead into the cylinder because the its no longer properly sealed. Consequence: Partially engine rebuild which means a new sealeant and you need to overhaul the cylinder(head).
Sailing Trio Travels
Sailing Trio Travels - 7 years ago
+Nik Leiser Turns out it was just a low flow of raw water exchange from partially blocked exhaust pipe. Caused it to get too hot and push out steam. Diagnosed quickly by Gerry the mechanic in Fajardo and now she runs clear and clean! So happy it was not a head gasket. Thanks for all the concern!

+Ted Smith Thanks for noticing. We're trying. So much waste out there it saddens me often. Recently in St Maarten I saw their huge mountain of garbage that wasn't there 14 years ago when we first visited as a newly wed couple. (politically correct called a land fill) They were burning it at night and from across the island our throats became sore at night and poor Krista was coughing and sneezing abnormally when the wind came from that direction. We're not allergic to anything and can weather any sickness like a trooper. Anyway I could go on, but this is as you say, is not the forum. I'll use my own website. Thanks so much for noticing the tiny effort we choose to show in just one minor instance, in one video, in our effort to raise an intelligent and aware child. no offences intended.
Cheers Ted. Brad

+IronicallyVague wasn't going for this kind of reply, only thanking a friend for doing something good and showing it, and teaching it to their son. Not saying I agree or disagree with your comment, just may not be the best forum for politics of that sort on a cool sailing channel. If you sail, fair winds! If not, fair sky's.
