SEA SICKNESS & Proven Tips to Prevent it [Ladies Night]

For this Ladies Night, I chatted with my friend Nike (YT: https://www.youtube.com/user/WhiteSpotPirates) And our Patron Rachel (IG: sailing_piragua https://www.instagram.com/sailing_piragua/ ) Here are some Good tips to help prevent Sea Sickness (Rachel's List) 1. No caffiene 2. Don’t go to sea hungover 3. Being down below. Stay on deck as much as possible and when down below, take time to lie down if it’s getting too much and get some fresh air. If you can, open a hatch or have a fan. 4. When down below, have a video of the sea and the horizon on your phone. I found watching this can save me from being ill. 5. Drink lots of water 6. Eat dry salty and bland foods 7. Lie down! 8. Deep breaths 9. Wear loose clothes that are not too tight around your neck. Thermals can be a big problem of they come up too high. 10. Stay cool. Getting to warm is a common trigger 11. Stay busy 12. Listen to music that you love - it’s a great distraction. Dance, sing, whatever, take your mind off it! 13. Know which smells set you off - Diesel is a common one, bananas is a weird one for me! 14. If it gets too much - sleep. Anywhere that is comfortable. For example I have slept under tables more times than I can count because it was more comfortable than my bunk! 15. Find a seasickness medication that works for you. *Scopoderm patches - I said sturgeon which is the wrong one!! 16. Believe that you won’t be ill. I used to hate people saying it but the more tricks I found and the more I believed I might not be ill, the more it worked. 17. For any sailors out there who are seasick, don’t let it get in your way. You will find something that is right for you. If you love being at sea, don’t let anything stop you. Some of the greatest sailors also suffer from seasickness! Volvo ocean race, Pete Goss ect. Hi Kika, we need a forum on this topic. I gave up my love of the sea and sailing because my bouts with sea sickness were so severe I could now endure them. Food remedies like ginger do nothing for severe sea sickness because of the ear-eye communication break down. Looking for the horizon made e worse due to the big waves between the horizon and me. Staying on deck felt like a roller coaster ride. Seeing the stern rise 20-30 feet above the sea gave me a anxiety attack. I could not hold down any food or water for three days. The only reason it stopped was that we reached our destination. The only thing close to relief was lying flat in midships where the tilting is felt the least. As soon as we entered the harbor, I clambered up the steps and onto the tender. I went immediately to shore where I continued to stumble like a drunk after being on confused seas. I ate and ate, and after a few hours finally got my legs back under me. It was the most horrible feeling of my life. It was worse than pneumonia. It was like being hung by my toes from the mast in a storm. It was like spending three days tossing in a dryer. I gave up on my passion because it was making me nuts. So, I am reaching out to those who suffer from world class levels of sea sea sickness because I am soooo tired on living on land. I want nothing more than to get back to my life at sea. As a friend said, having sea sickness is cruel for one who loves the sea.

Ginger root tea, there use to be Ginger breath strips that helped but it may not be made anymore since I can't find them at the store, eat dry goods (granola bars) and drink water, and distract yourself with tasks (that seems to be the best short term, a couple of people only got sea sick at night after work was done even though it was rougher seas during the day

Really helpful video, thank you! Rachel has quite the list — I can say I agree with almost all the items, and can add two: don’t let your body get too (warm) OR cold, and don’t spend time behind a camera. Never tried watching a video of the ocean though, that’s pretty funny...proof that this seasickness thing is half in our heads, which to me can make it that much more aggravating! I feel nauseated to some degree almost every time we sail. Fortunately a combo of Seabands and Bonine has worked for me. -Lauren

It's been years since I was on the ocean. Went fishing with my dad and uncle. 4, 5 ft seas. They both, and a lot of the other folks on board suffered seasickness to varying degrees. My uncle and dad were both rather surprised it didn't bother me a bit. I rather enjoyed the rolling and pitching. On the occasions I've been on lakes that were rough, it hadn't bothered me either. I'm sure it will catch up too me eventually though. Till then, I will make sure I'm up wind of anyone that is and is hurling, and turn up the tunes. I'm one of those that if I hear it, smell it, or see it, I will be joining in.

We learned guests often arrive early in the day with empty stomachs...so we got in the habit of serving oatmeal in the harbor before setting out to sail. Worse experience..my boss vomitted in the toilet and lost her false teeth in the bowl...she was humble forever...knew she shouldn't drink cheap rum punch at 10:00 am...LoL. Great info K.

The newest seasickness prevention I've read/heard about is to wear an ear plug (like those soft orange ones) in your non-dominant ear. So if you're right-handed, you wear one in your left ear, and vice versa. It's supposed to restore the equilibrium in your ears or something like that. I'm not at sea so I have no personal experience with this, nor do I know where I heard about it. But it sounded interesting and I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try.

A real natural remedy is ginger. Wife has gotten sea sick nearly every time Dramamine helps her but she get sleepy. In her case ginger ale has enough ginger in it to work for her. Took a high speed charter key West to fort Jefferson national park once. With 6-8 seas, after days of 30 mph winds. She made it through and easily 1/4 of the passengers blew chunks probably closer to half

I was a Navy Radarman. We could leave Newport , Rhode Island during a nor'easter and I'd be hungover like a dog. Wake up, drag myself to morning mess, drag myself the ladders to Combat Information Center, a dark space with no portholes. Up high, behind the bridge where you get the full benefit of the ship rolling. I'd be hanging on that SPA-4 repeater like a demented monkey.

Never got seasick in my life. Hungover from rack to mess deck to CIC, no portholes, no fresh air. No seasickness, ever.

After having spent many years at sea I can tell you that Rachel has her s++t together. Everything she says will help different people at different times. There is no shame in seasickness. If you love being on the water then you will conquer seasickness one way or another.

There are these nasal inhalors with a strong mint oil in them, you usually use them for when you have a cold and they'll help clear up a stuffy nose, for me they also work great whel feeling quesy.

When dad was in the Navy he would get sick for the first day or two when he would transfer to a new ship, because each class of ship moves differently. Once he got used to the roll rate he was fine.

Only time I was ever sea sick was on a ferry from Nova Scotia to Maine. The pressure was welling up in my throat. My wife was white as a ghost with it and wanted to eat a green apple. So I cut one in wedges for her and watched her eat, fully expecting it all to come up. To my biggest surprise the colour returned to her face in a matter of minutes and she was better. That's when I ate a few wedges and within minutes the sea sickness went away entirely. Then I ate dinner in the galley.

Ah, yes sea sickness, I know it well. 28 years in the Canadian Navy and I'm still not over it. Causes, 1. different smells - diesel fuel - greasy cooking - being within smell distance of other sea sick people.... 2. acid foods - oranges.... 3. being to warm... 4. being in confined spaces in the ship... 5. not having a full stomach... 6. not re hydrating after being sick and yes there are many, many more reasons. There are some remedies but no cures. My poison was 75 mg gravol every 12 hrs. Oh yes for all those ass holes that say it's only in your head cause they never get sea sick, have them take the 24 hour life raft test. Have them get in a certified life raft in 2 or more foot seas for 24 hrs without a break. They will be crying for their mamas well before the 24 hour time limit is up.
P.S. Don't give a really sea sick person a gun because they will shoot themselves. Never go below and use the forward heads when you are sea sick - always go aft.

I've went fishing as a teenager with some old school fishermen in Aruba and when I got sea sick for the first time they told me to drink some sea water and watch the horizon and it helped. I never got sick again since then. Cheers Uma!

what about chewing (sugarless) gum? That can stabilize an upset stomach because of the enzymes
in mouth that are triggered to flow by chewing gum.

For me , worst thing for sea sickness is diesel fumes and milky coffee. My go to for feeling better is fresh air on my face and focus on the horizon. If you aren't underway, going for a swim or float seems to help as well.

You know, I think that made my sickness so much worse. The tall ship I worked o n had the exhaust pipe at midships, so it always blew back toward the helm. At least I don't have to deal with that any more.

Fortunately I am not afflicted but I was once told that the secret to sea sickness is, "Pineapple. It doesn't prevent sea sickness and it doesn't cure sea sickness.... but it does taste the same going down as it does coming up."

(Banana is also good with the same justification.)

Try and believe in your remedy. An ear infection in one ear worked superb(although not recommended). When going below think first about the task,e.g. go to the head, get into bunk, then keep my eyes closed, the occasionally blink is ok. Don't look down when putting on/ taking off wellies.

I read recently, that if you put a single earplug in, it helps eliminate the confusion between your inner ear and your eyes. I plan to try it the next time I feel sick.

I just commented the same thing (oops!) but I heard it had to go in your non-dominant ear, ie: in your left ear if you're right-handed. I'd be interested to hear if it works.

We've only done day passages so far of about 60nm but I start to get seasick once we're an hour or so from the heads. I never get seasick in the enclosed waters of our home port of Lake Macquarie though so I'm not sure what the difference is but i've been trying different methods each time to determine what works for me. I've tried Travelcalm tablets which took the edge off and put me to sleep but I still ending up being violently sick once I woke up. I read about a concoction of essential oils and i've found it to work really well - combine lavender, ginger, peppermint and spearmint in a jar, bottle etc. and everytime you feel queasy, just take off the lid and inhale. I've just ordered Scopoderm patches online from New Zealand because you can't buy them here in Australia so they're next on my list. I have the pressure point wristbands but haven't found them to be use. I do use Phenergan (antihistamine) as a sleeping tablet and i've heard that any medication ending in 'ine' will help. Some other remedies I've heard about are earbuds, vaseline in your belly button, ginger or peppermint tea, Sturgeron tablets.

You can also massage those oils on your stomach which would probably last longer and work better for more severe cases.

Acupressure: find the halfway point between your belly button and the pit of your chest (that sunken point at the bottom of your chest). Press firmly at that midpoint. I believe this is the top of your stomach. It prevents a reverse diastolic wave (vomiting). It prevents nausea, but not the cause and is a stop gap measure. What good is oral medication if you are vomiting? This works for car sickness or most other nausea situations.
