I have a question,
Does the mast rotate with the boom when adjusting the mainsheet?

No, your mast stays fixed in place. The boom does not rotate unless you have a roller reefing type boom (more common on smaller sailboats).

In addition, when sailing close on the wind, bringing the traveler car to the windward side of the centerline allows the boat to be sailed closer to windward than without a traveler. This is by being able to have the boom on center rather than slightly to leeward as it would be when all the mainsheet tackle and line is taken into account.

+mrmrlee Yes, and it keeps the leech trimmed in light air. It's a good idea to check the uppermost batten after you make this setting. Keep it parallel to the boom or slightly opened to leeward. This will flatten the leech and help the super light air exit the leech without turbulence.

One thing you might want to add is to ease the main sheet as pressure builds to twist off the top of the main to depower as well.
