In Australia the greeenies have made r134a more valuable than contraband and the fridgies have to install security to stop it getting stolen out of their sheds and trucks. Great channel, once you have watched all the titties and bikinis and you want to find out how its really done this is the channel you need. Subbed keep it coming....

The oil charge is because a can that big is for cars, where there is much more oil in the system, and a system that leaked leaked gas usually has lost some oil (mist) at the same time. When you mention o-rings, you may be on a $lippery $lope where you really need a vacuum pump and a new drier, a thorough rebuild. Topping it up leaves problems.

Lyfan, Thanks for the insight. In these foreign countries, automotive stores are nothing like one visits in the U.S.. I have gone to countless, dumpy, little, automotive stores throughout S.E. Asia with my empty can of gas. They shake their heads as they have no idea what is being held in my hand. I finally found these larger cans at a couple of small air conditioning and refrigerator repair shops. In many of these countries, only the larger, commercial sized tanks of refrigerant can be bought. The boarding ladder was installed by a previous owner decades ago. It was fabricated in Trinidad. Watch the "Hookah, Cleaning the Bottom" vid and it shows more about the boarding ladder. Thanks again for your information and comment.

Thanks! Have been binge watching your videos since finding your channel a few days ago....it is refreshing to see a sailing channel not driven by the need to beg for patrons or beers to keep their dream moving. And, nice to see an informative channel, not the usual twenty minute boozy, beach bar, nightclub cruising (though I like a cold one as well or more than most!), sunset ending repetitive episode. You are out there doing it; I am completing the upgrades to my 40' cat and your videos (Profurl, refrig, Predictwind) have been informative. Keep it up. Your wife, who hovers out of the limelight (and manages electronics!) should be proud of the efforts and direction you are taking "your retirement hobby"

I had watched so many cruising videos with technical information either non existent or incorrect, I thought I would give video making a shot. It has been a long, steep, learning road. I would almost cringe to have to go back and look at my first 4 or 5 videos. Thanks for bearing through them! I hope the rebuild of your cat finishes up quickly so you can get out there sailing soon.

What prompted the making of this video was the statement in one manufacturers video that you can buy small cans of R-134a, anywhere in the world. In our travels to other countries, that did not turn out to be correct. I really did not want to get into a “how to” maintenance video as there are others far more knowledgeable than me and the how to videos are already out there. Before making the R-134a video, I emailed Rich Borne, owner of Cool Blue Marine Refrigeration, and asked a refrigeration question which he quickly responded to. Later I asked to see if he would mind me mentioning his videos in my refrigeration video . He never responded so I took that as a no. He has a very good series of refrigeration diagnostic videos which can apply to other brands of refrigeration systems. What type of thermostats do you use. I appears that you have external ones. I have a holding plate system and the internal thermostats sometimes freeze up if the humidity is too high. Thanks

From a distance (and looking at the sensor) it appears to be a “Dixel” controller. They are very versatile for a wide range of applications.

Hi Thomas,Those round thermostats, mounted on the side of the box, are
disconnected. They were part of an antique Grunert, holdover plate system. This
boat is 42 years old. In the video, you can see the new temperature probe
hanging on the partition wall, held in place with a yellow wire tie. The cold
plate is on the opposite side of the box. The wire from that probe goes up to
the control module on the wall where the box temperature is displayed. It seems
one of the manufacturers of the marine refrigeration units should be able to come
up with a supplier of a dedicated probe and remote readout suitable for a
sailboat. Thanks for watching the video!
