Toby, boom vangs are often considered an option on newer boats. On older boats, it's easy to look at a photo and see if it has a vang or not. It's not a safety issue, but a performance issue. There are no specific models that do or do not have a vang. All sailboats should be equipped with a vang as standard equipment. Not an option. You cannot sail a boat on reaches or on a run with decent speed or power without a vang.

I have a rigid boom kicker, but no boom vang. The kicker keeps the boom from twisting around the mast, but does not pull down on the boom. I also have my sheets rigged mid boom. Do you think I should install a boom vang? Thank you for the vid!

Your kicker holds the boom up, but will not control the leech of your mainsail on deep reaches or a run. Your mid-boom mainsheet will be effective up to a close reach. On deeper points of sail, it will not have enough downward pull to keep the mainsail leech under good control. I would consider installing a low-cost block and tackle vang.

Yep! Just got back from her have to clean the carb on the little outboard and dive in the water to inspect/clean/pry the centerboard down hopefully, and if not beach it to do so...fun fun already hehe
