How is this different from a midshipman's hitch?

Same thing. Rigger and author Brion Toss calls this version the "Rigger's Hitch". Wikipedia says this: "The adjustable loop forms of the rolling hitch and Magnus hitch, in addition to being called either of those two names, have also come to be known variously as the taut-line hitch, tent-line hitch, rigger's hitch, adjustable hitch, or midshipman's hitch."

I found the various iterations of the rolling hitch to be confusing, especially so when you can slide a turn down the pole and convert one variant into another. Perhaps I don't understand. Animated knots describes this as the Ashley version II of the rolling hitch, which as you say is better for rope on rope applications. This is the version I decided to call my rolling hitch, and I try to forget other variants because I think they are inferior. It seems like a great choice when you get a binding wrap on the winch and need to take pressure off the winch to straighten it without waiting for the next tack.

+spelunkerd This version would be a great choice when working with today's high-tech synthetics. Knots do not hold as well in some exotics because their outer core is so slippery. Thanks for your post.
