What about magnetic deviation and variation before drawing?

In the illustration, compass error has already been applied to the course and bearing. If you decide to change course (in this case, to the right), use variation and deviation again to find the new compass course to steer.

Just a question, but does this not give an ambiguous answer? Looking at the example, the current is from the front starboard: but say the current is a little stronger, from the front port, would you not still end up on the same bearing to SPIRE, but right of your estimated track line instead? Does this method eliminate the ambiguous answer and if so how…what am I missing here? Frankly, with an unknown current/wind couldn't you solve this to be anywhere on that line? I'll take another look at this in the morning and see if it makes sense… and Tuesday when I have some time I might just break out the graphing paper.

Wilfred, the current will push you to one side or another of the sailing track. You are somewhere along that LOP at the time that you took the bearing. The EP is plotted at the closest point to the DR (thus the perpendicular). The more accurate the DR, the more reliable the EP (and vice versa). This example shows just the first step with EPs. You can apply all kinds of other variables if you have them (i.e. known tidal current direction and strength).
