There are always exceptions to tactics, but these are some very basics ones to keep in mind. I only really addressed one downwind strategy, and there are many strategies you should know to sail a clean and smart race. To effectively employ any strategy, you need to know the basic rules of sailboat racing, so make sure you have an understanding of the rules before you follow these tips. Hope this is helpful!

I believe this is in fact an error since unless the boats can round the top mark without tacking there is no advantage in being at the Pin end since it is not further upwind. It is game where upwind is an advantage not closer to the windward mark since none cant sail directly to the windward mark.
In reality the pin end is about one boat length at a disdvantage to the boats that started at the boat end since they will have to cross the other boats earlier behind the boats that started at the Boat end which they will find impossible unless they have sailed faster.
