this is genius, if you tow a skier on a power boat, and he falls this is the same method you use to get the rope to him. and instead of circling him you go past him and drag skirope across and go the othe way, basically the opposite way you were towing, ! its fast about 40 seconds, so thanks for the tip! it shows if you think about the method you probably have already performed it somewhere else!

Captain, I think this is a great idea but I wonder, can both methods be combined? I have not sailed much but when I took the intro course and later practiced on my own doing the figure 8 I sometimes missed. So I'm thinking that deploying the life sling on a line short enough to do the figure 8 should at least get some additional flotation to the man over board.

I just learned to sail in S.F. bay, and they taught us the figure 8 method. I noticed in light winds it was easy to accomplish, but it strong winds like you get on the bay 25+ it's a more difficult maneuver to do especially for new sailors. I like this method, seems easy and quick as long as the M.O.B. isn't unconscious like the first person said. Think I'll practice this one next time I'm on the bay!

The technique taught by the CYA is the “Figure 8”. In the cold Canadian waters rescue time is critical. Sometimes I sail in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The water there is so cold that you die after 7 minutes immersed in this water; you suffer permanent brain damages after 4 minutes. To pass our certification test here we have to recover within 2 minutes from any wind.

I don’t like this technique. In MOB you must react without hesitation. The helms-person must always be ready and react almost instinctively. This is why you should set yourself for one technique that you apply without second guessing, and Button-Hook Lifesling technique isn’t it. See, its biggest flaw is that it presumes the MOB is still capable and can catch the sling. It is quite possible that this person was hit by the boom or hit some other object while falling and isn’t capable.
