Great story, Wilfred. Indeed, lots of folks wonder about the origin of the name. Briggs Cunningham was an avid racer who came up with the idea to save time. And, of course, to help beat the competition on the race course!

LOL funny story: I was assisting instructing an adult dinghy course, and the very good instructor, though knowing all the terms, didn't know where they came from. As an English teacher, I have a passing interest in etymology, so I was happy to explain the origin of Halyard, Sheet, Port and Starboard, etc. He got to Cunningham, and he asked if I knew where that term came from, and I said "It's named after Mr Cunningham, it's inventor, obviously". Well, he thought I was yanking his chain. I had to send him an article before he'd believe me!
