Solo sailing to the keys & the 6 minute refit | Sailing Zingaro Ep-1

Finally done with the first episode! Super exited to share this. Flew from Hawaii to Ft Myers, Florida to look at a catamaran, and ended up living there for 2 months while refitting and getting her ready for sea. It was tough, and a great learning experience. I've video-documented much of the process, and will be putting out detailed how-to videos, maybe they will help someone in their journey. On my way to Cuba the autopilot went out, and my Macbook screen broke! SO I decided to sail to Miami to go to the Apple store, visit a few friends, and spearfish everyday while the autopilot was being serviced by Raymarine. Give us the story of you and Zingaro. How did you get her, who taught you to sail, how long are you out for etc, etc.
Sailing Zingaro
Sailing Zingaro - 7 years ago
I learned to sail from a crazy pirate with a boat named "Blow me".

The boat I found when I was living in Maui. It was in Florida, but the builder was in Maui so I took him out to lunch, then flew to Florida and purchased her the same day.

I'm out for as long as I can be. I'm heading to Tahiti, and hopefully around the world. I have enough money to last till the end of the year (I hope).

I'm going to make videos the entire way, but I'm not putting out crap, so there's not going to be a video every week just so I can make money. When I have enough good footage I'll put out a rad video, and I'll do how-to vids when the opportunity arises.

Thanks for the comment Harold. ;) Much love.

I'd have a float switch on the bilge pump with about a 5 minute timer on an audible alarm to warn you when you have a significant problem. Depending on luck is great, if you have it! I sure don't...

In days of old, all packing in stuffing boxes was flax packing and as you said requires a drip to provide necessary lubrication. I find it very hard to believe that your stuffing boxes have flax packing but really should have Teflon packing in today's world and for years now. Teflon is dripless as it is self lubricating. So with Teflon Packing you adjust the drip out. You may know all of this and something that I don't know but those are my thoughts based on my experience.

Oh boy, that's a tough one... You can get a plywood tri for 10k, or a slightly used catana for 300k....Start with a small mono and learn boats. That's my advice.

11:25 Don't know who told you that you are supposed to loosen the packing gland (I assume that's what you're talking about here) every time you take off. It's supposed to be tight enough to not leak at rest and drip slightly when engine's running.

I plan to retire in about 5 years, and I want to live on a 45ft cat, and sail from the east coast of the US to the island of Okinawa Japan. I hope to learn from your perils so I appreciate this channel. Do you ever plan to go through the Panama canal, and hit some Pacific islands?
Popeye Gordon
Popeye Gordon - 7 years ago
And yet most of the famous circumnavigators were dirt poor. Most are in little 30 foot boats and they have to stop to work for a while or get articles published to continue. Most of the rich leave their yacht toys in the marina, paying others to maintain them while they continue their money hoarding lifestyle.
John Lynch
John Lynch - 7 years ago
"Rich" is a relative term. I have friends that make much more money but I wouldn't call them rich. If you have a boat and can travel the world, then your life is immensely richer than the people without a dream or passion. Wealth is different than the richness that I was referring to in my reply. I may have misspoke because I'm sitting in a pier side bar surrounded by some wealthy boat owners right now and to me they are rich but I'm still a guy with a dream and a plan.
Popeye Gordon
Popeye Gordon - 7 years ago
John - having revealed all that your statement that only the rich are own boats is puzzling. Not true and no sailor I ever met thought that.
John Lynch
John Lynch - 7 years ago
I took my first day sailing class in 1998 and have been renting small sail boats all over the world from Hawaii to Japan to Virginia. I've crewed for other boat owners in several marinas where the opportunities were available so this is the continuation of my preparation, not the beginning. I think I'll be very prepared in 5 years when I make the transition. I need to learn more about marine diesels, navigation, instruments, and weather before I make the move but attending these shows and watching the experiences of others is getting me towards my goals. There will be several sailing charters to validate my preparation before I buy and plenty of time in the marina for refit and customizing before I head out to sea so while I appreciate the dialog, I'm offended by your assumptions about my plans.
Popeye Gordon
Popeye Gordon - 7 years ago
More like minimally prepared. You need to buy a small sailboat now to start learning. I went from a canoe with a sail to a 17 foot fiberglass trailer sailer to a 21 footer that I built in my driveway then a 34 foot Hunter sloop when I retired. That old $20,000 yacht was ravaged by tropical weather and it broke me trying to get it ready with every last cent I had, then I realized the nasty humidity in the tropics was more than I could handle. A catamaran is the way to go if you have the money. Monohulls leave you living in a deep dark tub. Transiting the Panama canal is not for beginners, you'll need crew.
John Lynch
John Lynch - 7 years ago
Popeye Gordon, I'm attending classes right now at the Annapolis sailboat show to gain some additional knowledge and skills before I invest in a boat but I expect to be continuously learning more. I'm lucky to have passive income to support my future plans but I don't think that makes me rich, just well prepared.
Popeye Gordon
Popeye Gordon - 7 years ago
John - You obviously have done very little research, take if from one who spent a lifetime reading all sailing magazines and books available in the US, the average live aboard sailor is of very modest means. We make huge sacrifices in our life ashore before moving aboard and most of us struggle to have enough funds to actually leave and cruise. Boats are hugely expensive for their size if you want them to be safe. Selling everything that won't fit on the boat and selling your house is a huge change. Broken marriages are frequently a part of the experience. It's OK to have a dream but if you don't want a really hard letdown when you actually try to do this you have a lot to learn first. You may figure out it is not for you, you have to do some crewing on other's boats or some charter cruises where you rent one first.
Watching youtube videos is in no way adequate to prepare you.
John Lynch
John Lynch - 7 years ago
I think anyone with a boat is rich. When I sell my house, then that money can go for the boat. This is part of a long term plan that includes a lot of saving for the future. I'm not rich yet, but I've got a plan.
Popeye Gordon
Popeye Gordon - 7 years ago
Wow, you must be rich. That will cost you at least 200K for a fixer upper.

When you're on shore power/water, do they also pump away the blackwater?
Popeye Gordon
Popeye Gordon - 7 years ago
Some marinas and harbors have free pump-out boats, some have only broken pumps on their docks but they will still fine the hell out of you if you empty your tanks overboard. Liveaboard humans are treated poorly and seen as bums and trash, many times you have nowhere to tie up your dinghy if you row ashore and marinas are prohibitively expensive. A composting toilet is a brilliant idea.
Sailing Zingaro
Sailing Zingaro - 7 years ago
No, really the only way to get the septic tank emptied is to pump it out, either 3nm out to sea, pay a pump-out boat to come over, or pump it out at a pump station (usually at a marina).

Hi James! Great video, looking forward to more of your updates. my wife and I also just bought a catamaran (Seawind 1160) down in Florida (Naples, currently in Cortez), so we're in your neck of the woods as well. You can check us out at sailingwithdogs.com if you're interested. We'll be taking our boat from FL back up to New England in April, so will be around FL for the first month or two!

Regarding your stuffing box issue, grounding generally shouldn't affect that (and in fact, your prop shouldn't have grounded at all, you should usually be grounding on the keels first), it's more likely it just wasn't adjusted appropriately initially. Those stuffing boxes are generally a 'set it and forget it' format. Once you have it adjusted so that it's dripping occasionally while the engine is running in-gear, lock it down and leave it that way (don't tighten/loosen it for when you're not running the engine, just leave it). The tiny amount of water that comes in while the engines are at rest is negligible. Check out Don Casey for all things boat-related, his books are great: http://www.boatus.com/boattech/casey/stuffing-box.asp.

Check prop, U can bend or brake prop going under 2 knots. Bent prop vibrates shaft which ruins bearings which will screw up drive easily. Always run a good prop, have a spare ready at all times. If u are sailing alone U must wear a safety line and life preserver. MUST!!!

You think it's not click bait if it's actually in the video? No. It's a picture of add to bait you into clicking, irrelevant if it's in the video or not.

Good editing, good story, only suggestion is a short intro on the lady would have been appropriate, especially since you used her in your thumbnail. Otherwise the video was solid and your channel is worth subscribing to. Look forward to following your adventure.
