Vacuum bags are simply great. Full stop. Who doesn't wish they had more storage, on the ocean in a sailboat, in an RV or in their home? HEY! Don't you guys know that "crack is whack?" Hahahaha

Some great ideas - thanks. One sort of negative thought I had though was that it is probably good to retain some "capacity" in the bilge for bilge water. If you had a leak, it won't take as long to cover the sole and possibly some other more important equipment. Simon - I can't believe you got talked into that R rated scene!!

But then again if you did full up the bilge to say 85% and you get water coming in , you will see it sooner then later and then you can take the things out, and then you can see more .

Very good point Ron! Some boats don't have a deep bilge at all and it would not be wise to pack it full of 'stuff'. :)

um.......the ending....umm....anyway those silica beads can be reused even if they get waterlogged. We have some that you can bake the water out of them in the oven. The silica can really prolong the life of cameras and other electronics on the water if space bagged.
Allyn Onderdonk
Allyn Onderdonk - 7 years ago
If you sucked the air out of the electronics bags there would be even less moisture available so they would last a little longer.

+SailingBritican usually the beads inside will turn pink or blue when they are full of moisture. Just cut them open and look inside they won't bite! Leaving them out in the air for any length of time will saturate them. Heat in oven at 250ish F for about 5 hours....without the little paper packages and on a tin tray. Heat until they have turned back to their original color. Then tape them back in their packages or just drop them loose in a bag or something. Basically you could store them in that same ziplock bag. You really don't necessary need a container other than a plastic bag to keep the air out. The paper bags just keep them together.

Yes...I did read that you can back the Silica. Allyn - do you know when the silica needs baking? Is it something to do every year or so? Hard to determine what's going on as you can't really see inside the packet. And - I never thought of putting them in with my cameras, etc. Will do that now! Thank you :)

That was really informative. We also used those bags when we moved making more space for more stuff. Although we didn't know there was a full moon out. Simon, how many times??? Hahahahaha!

I wrestle with accessibility. what to bury under settees. I hate decorative items. baskets, fake flowers. my boat has a pretty barometer, that doesn't work.

Thanks for noticing the new intro Mike - my dad made it for me and sent it over yesterday. I was impressed! Simon is off at the marina office sorting out an issue (the pump out boat at the marina hit us!) but when he gets back I'll let him know your thoughts. Hehehehe. Kim
