Survival at Sea Tips. Adventures of an Old seadog ep115

Talking about survival and safety at sea, grab bags, sinking, Exploding beer!, Gun fire, Storms and meet up with the White Spot Pirate girls. #storm #cruising #sailing #single handed #sailingvideo Thank you for watching this episode, please give us a thumbs up and subscribe. On Facebook our page is ‘Adventures of an old Seadog’ and there you can find ‘realtime’ up-dates and news. Facebook https://www.facebook.com/adventuresofanoldseadog/ If you’d like to help the Old Seadog Please checkout our Patreon page on the link below. https://www.patreon.com/Adventuresofanoldseadog Contributions to the project can be made at paypal.me/seadogadventures Instagram https://www.instagram.com/adventuresofanoldseadog/ Twitter https://twitter.com/barryperrins Thanks so much for your support, The adventure continues. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. Holes in beer can bottoms? You need to drink faster. I hope you get that yock cleaned out. Looking like you will be able to leave soon. Fair winds. You sing like me, bad.

Suggestion for your grab bag = micro fiber towel (or a shammy) not only could you wipe up with it, maybe use it as a sponge for the lifeboat.. but you also could put under you rhat and shade your neck..

1)Hitting the bottom(ROCK) while tied to the dock is not acceptable. I hope the price of the slip reflects that?
2) Barry, regarding how the solar & wind chargers are hooked up? On a sunny, windy day, can you see specifically which are charging (& how much) independently of one another?
3) Beer can ELECTROLYSIS?

Galvanic on corrosion on the botton of the cans.... Simple as that... Next time put them over a rubber or plastic mat and keep them dry.

rubber bike inner-tubes are very handy on board for springing lines when surging happens, for towing dinghy it stops it jerking around, stops the Main sheet snatching when there is little wind but big swell. Cut up into strips, makes great straps for tying down tarps, and around ones waist to hold up ones pants. happy sailing Barry.

Hi Barry. Could the leaking beer can situation be attributed to dissimilar metal contact in a corrosive environment? Aluminum against steel in your storage area. Love your adventures.

Barry goes beaufort 16:33 must have been the beer , which had enough from that anchoring ... or was it hit by leaking currents electrolysis rats running in that gruesome, macabre sludge... Again a nice Barrisma performance of epic proportions, Fair Winds to the lovely Old Seadog

Berry, you still the most amazing guy. Perfect video, not to long and not to short. One of the best cuts and narrating like all times.
The "empty" beer cans are caused from corrosion. It is an electrical element if you have different metals connected by an electrolyte like seawater is. So the aluminium from the cans gets oxidized. This aluminiumoxide is the white stuff you got in the bilge. It's like zinc on iron. So use a plastic box to store cans in the bilge, or better - drink it ;-))
Good luck, you are on the west side ( Pacific Side) of the tropical depression in the western Caribbean Sea. Nice to see your meeting with Nike. It was very quiet around her during summer. I know she helped her friends with there charter business.

Galvanic corrosion is eating up your beer cans. You need an insulator between the steel and the aluminum.

But why is the rum always gone? In this day and age with modern marvels, surely there is some sort of water maker that can be added to the grab bag. Somewhat important if stuck in a raft. Ok just looked one up and I am sure there are others but I mentioned the problem so at least I can give one solution. https://www.survival-warehouse.com/water-storage/katadyn-desalinators/katadyn-survivor-06.html

You need to put a hole in the bottom of the waterproof bags, to let the water drain out. Beer is an important, vital, necessary, valuable, essential, wanted, needed, loved, lusted after, #@€*%, ahh... requirement in your survival gear! Stowe according to maritime regulations.

I agree with the SOLAS flare recommendation. But, There is no such thing as "USCG Compliant" in the the USA for privately owned pleasure craft, as regarding EPIRB's. You must have basic safety equipment, which Barry has.

Cliff Crowley
Cliff Crowley - 6 years ago
EPIRB battery shelf life could be 10 yrs. And to be fair he said he had a second, but that one is prob 2008 batteries. The coastal flares are useless. Get SOLAS if you are going to have flares offshore. You wonder why you cannot attract any crew to join? You really should have someone more knowledgeable give you at inspection and make recommendations. The reason you wont go to USA is probably you are not close to USCG complaint.

Bad news about the beer - even worse news - the plunging neckline of the grey tee shirt - salty nipples on the horizon. Could use old grey tee shirt to protect flimsy beer cans from imminent wastage. The alloy on those cans is paper thin and punctures easily - the motion of the boat will wear them through quicksticks. Nice one Barry - new arrivals seem very pleasant ;-)

Just another thought - if the beer can was on the steel hull you have probably got a bit of galvanic action going on. You need a barrier between the two.
