You forgot to say that drinking the juice from a brown coconut will give you the shits.

Hah...I never knew that about the brown coconuts either...another good use as far as I’m concerned...I will have to give it a try ;)

That has actually happened to you? Just yesterday I drank the water from 2 brown coconuts I was about to grate and nothing unusual happened on my end. Just make sure they have not started to sour.

Kia, I eat coconut every morning on my oatmeal and always put grated coconut in rice. Coconut goes with everything. Thanks for watching

Hey, Patrick, I subscribed and I'm enjoying your videos. Questions about this one. What was that tool you had to scrape the coconut? Any suggestions on husking the coconut if you really were deserted on an island and didn't have an axe? Would also love to learn more about the frond weaving.
Patrick Childress Sailing
Patrick Childress Sailing - 6 years ago
Originally, natives in the pacific would use a serrated clam shell to scrape out the coconut. Across the Pacific, hardware stores sell these rounded, serrated, steel scrapers attached to a long piece of wood to sit on. Without a sharp pointed stick of hardwood or an ax, you can take a brown coconut and more pointy end down, start bashing it hard against a hard rock, not coral. Soon, the fibers start to deteriorate and can then be pulled away from the nut. It is not always an easy process.

So glad you started You Tubing, I've watched them all now and this is a Top Channel, very informative and to the point. Glad to see Rebecca is cottoning on to the idea, could she do some episodes on the navigation? Also what about the cooking? I'm really looking forward to watching you both in the future.

Hello...This is Rebecca...Patrick’s wife. I am waiting for Patrick to get really quick at this video stuff...and then maybe I will get more involved. I just can not fathom working for as many hours as he does every day to do these videos. I am really glad you are enjoying them...I just hope he gets faster with them so we can do some videos together.

Patrick Childress thanks for the reply. Never underestimate the things we want to hear about all aspects of sailing. I’ve been sailing since I was 4 and I’m 59 today, so if I’m interested I’m sure any cruiser will be. You both have great personalities for the medium. I think you’ve found your new vocation, passing on your well found knowledge. I’m between boats at the moment so you are providing a much needed therapy. Fair winds.

Thanks for the ideas. I really wish Rebecca would get more interested. She is very computer savvy and I am getting blisters on the brain trying to figure out all this video stuff. Slowly I will get her to do some more cameos. She would be good at doing something on electronic navigation. Check out her latest article on electronics in the current issue of Ocean Navigator, July/August 2018 issue. Slowly I will get her more involved. I wasn't so sure how worthy the topic of provisioning would be but since you mention it, I will continue to gather footage for a Provisioning video as no one talks about weevils, which are prevalent, and foreign brands to stay away from etc. I also have a very accurate list of provisions for 6 people for 14 days developed from my boat delivery days between New England and the Caribbean. If there is any thing else you think is a worthy subject, I would like to hear it.

Sounds like a great ROTTI. My American taste buds don't do well with the hot chilies so I think I would add some raisins instead…. Coconut goes with anything, I eat fresh grated coconut every day.

Thanks for watching! Chagos was the perfect place to make a coconut video. The next video is about coconut crabs. There is no one living in the Chagos archipelago to hunt them so there are incredible numbers of them, even during the day.
