Antibiotic cremes have not been shown to be effective. Iodine is the best but hard on the skin. Cypro capsules are really effective, when the infection is not just on the surface, where iodine can kill it.
Sailing followtheboat
Sailing followtheboat - 6 years ago
Yes, the cream was hopeless, did nothing. The cipro worked immediately, and we should have used it from the start, since we now know that these tropical bacteria can get into deep tissue very fast, then into the blood stream. Iodine is a must for the first aid kit. Thanks for the tips! Liz

If no one has mention it, I think Iodine is a very good first aid for scratches or small cuts. Seen beach life guard giving it to someone, they won't administer it therselvs, who had badly scratched there leg when they had a fall on the rocks. Think it stings like hell but said to be very good cleanser for wounds. Good luck and keep safe.

Yes, iodine is an old classic, I'm surprised no-one's mentioned it... Cheers! Liz

Enjoyed that and the whole series. Good to hear that Jamieโ€™s leg is healing and it is a good illustration how dependent we are on antibiotics which are in fact losing their effectiveness -quite worrying.

Yes, it's very worrying about the growing resistance to antibiotics. It was a close call and we learned a lesson. Liz

Is fresh water access on all these small islands rainwater catchment only? I have some property on Long Island in Nova Scotia. My well there goes into a fresh water aquifer. It's a rather largish island and that may be the reason why (The sea water is filtered by layers of rock/earth.). I'd like to hear your thoughts on this.

You'll need to sail the area there one day. Highest tides in the world I'm told in the Bay of Fundy. Beautiful place but a bit chilly!

Water is bountiful in the inhabited islands, with loads of springs. Some of the smaller outlying islands didn't appear to have a water source. Your island sounds beautiful! Liz

Glad to hear the infection has cleared up. I was curious about checking in and out of a country. You mention that you had already checked out of the Anambas but were stopping at one last place. Just what are the rules on something like that (and I'm sure they're different for different countries)?
Sailing followtheboat
Sailing followtheboat - 6 years ago
There is some flexibility sometimes in some countries, particularly if you are sailing. Thailand will allow you around a week from checking out of Langkawi and checking in at Phuket, but it's an unwritten rule. By the letter of the law you might get in trouble if you stay too long after checking out in any country. Liz

Always enjoy your videos looking forward to your next one, thanks! I keep in the medicine box friars balsam and arnica cream, f/b when applied to skin tissue seals the area from infection but is also an natural antibiotic that normally clears anything up in 7 days, Arnica cream speeds up healing of derma and tissue after injury.

Jamieโ€™s tropical infection reminded me of Jack Londonโ€™s book, โ€œThe Cruise of the Snarkโ€, documenting his experiences when he tried to replicate Joshua Slocumโ€™s voyage around the world. He was afflicted with several strange tropical diseases the last one of which ended his trip. Itโ€™s a good read. Thought you might be interested.

Glad your leg healed up. Here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast USA I have known a few people who have gotten a flesh eating bacteria that was extremely fast acting. One man had to have his arm amputated below the elbow from cutting his hand on a fishing line and a woman I know had to have reconstructive surgery on her lady parts from an infection she got on her thigh. In both cases it went from a small sore to life threatening in just a day or two.
Sailing followtheboat
Sailing followtheboat - 6 years ago
Yup, it's a serious matter. You can can get sepsis and die, or lose limbs if you don't get on top of it straight away. Thanks for sharing your stories here! Liz
Bob Fomenko
Bob Fomenko - 6 years ago
Ah, flesh eating bacteria guys is no joke. Not to be taken lightly. Usually it needs surgical debridement and IV antibiotics. Cat scratches can be quite nasty as well. Refill your cipro Rx when you can. And yea, stay out of the water when you have a break in your skin until it heals. Mix some salt with boiled water and use that to irrigate the site. Betadine mixed with sterile water or saline and irrigate that into the wound. Keep it dry after cleaning it. Change the dressing as needed. Seek prompt medical attention if it doesn't improve.
See your using a panny GH5 now. I have one as well. I like it but the low light performance leaves a lot to be desired. What do you guys think of yours?
Glad your ok. Remember Jamie, chicks dig scars!
Sailing followtheboat
Sailing followtheboat - 6 years ago
Thanks for that info, Bob. We'll be making a note of all that. Love the GH5 as a video camera. Of course 99% of our footage is shot during the day, and at night we have lights but yeah, low-light performance isn't a patch on some of the Sony cameras. It doesn't bother me but if money were no object I'd add a Sony as a b-camera just for low-light occasions. GH5 AF 'issue' has also been solved by setting the shutter angle to anything under 180 degrees. Look that one up if you don't already know about it. Cheers!

Ciao my dear, i spent nearly 40 years in Asia, mainly in India, and i tell you the true i got all incredible type of skin and flesh diseases, infections and so on. For me it was really a very big issue and it starts to be a paranoia after some time. First, atibiotics do not work, in form of cream or pills. In most of these bad situations i decided (in some places no alternative choice) to consult local "doctors" so called medicine men.I tell a story: during monsoon in Orissa , walking all time in water, during the night ( i don't know why all these bacteria, virus, insects and all of these bastards, wake up) i started scretching furiosly one of my feet. In short time i noticed the veins start to turn red and swollen. Slowly it looks like it was moving up on my leg and what it was left it was a black dry like burned veins. F....k i turned to be a bit worried. Nothing to do with antibiotics so i d was looking for an alternative treatment by local doctor. He advice me to make some wraps imbued of diesel on the affected parts. Incredible and it was working after only a couple of days. These bastards worms stop to go up my body and i got cured. So this is one story. Anyway sea water is never good on any skin/flesh diseases and infection. Take care Riccardo Sorreca (el venesian)

Yuck. Looks painful. Doesn't present like cat scratch infection. One, these are usually caused by young cats or kittens and Two, usually cause infection of a gland. So the cat may have caused the original abrasion but some other kind of epidermal bacterium is probably responsible for the actual infection which occurred after the fact. So while kitty is off the hook, one should always clean a wound well with soap and water immediately after any kind of wound especially one caused by an animal. Liz is correct. You are very lucky. Thank goodness she had something to treat it with! Thanks for taking us along with you to uncharted cruising waters off the beaten path!

Glad Jamie got that infection under control.
Septicemia kills more foreigners in the tropics than skin cancer, sharks and pirates combined.
Its something to do with the heat and humidity, that stops skin from healing as quickly as in colder countries.

Hi guys. Learn some more, for free!! When using peroxide, Dettol etc, never wash the wound (do that once with clean water). Always wipe the area NEXT TO the wound. The body's response mechanisms (blood clotting, anti infection etc) start working immediately, and they are susceptible to being killed, stopped or retarded by the antibacterial properties of the Dettol etc. In the absence of available medication where there is infection, eat a clove of garlic at least three times a day, and for a leg wound like this, as much ginger as you can get into your grub. In old codgers, which you are (like me) blood circulation in the legs is slow, and yotties are lazier than they think, so the garlic will kill 99% of infections in the bloodstream (even abscesses under your teeth) and the ginger gets your circulation going to get fresh antibodies to the infected area quicker. Keep the area dry, and not only out of the sea but avoid exposure to direct sunlight as well, as although UV kills nasties pretty well, you're exposing an area of damaged skin and the UV is killing the beneficial healing mechanisms too. Also, when infected, cut out all dairy products and anything with dairy products in (whey/whey powder etc.) Will spare you the details on that, but it works. Someone else mentioned MMS, well worth having aboard but research it carefully and get the right stuff. It's actually made with sodium chlorite, not chloride, and there is a process to follow to make your own. It's on Youtube somewhere, and pretty simple but you have to do it right or get a trustworthy source. Extremely effective.

Liz, you guys asked about heating stoves in your last video. "Life is Like Sailing" has a video about putting in a heater. He lives in Prince Rupert, BC. Another channel that has a video about heating stoves is "Venture Lives". They're farther North than the previous recommendation. Both are live aboard channels.
Back in the 1950's/60's/70's my dad had a diesel oil fired cook stove(and oven) that provided all our heat. He had a 40' then later a 52' salmon trawler. All you needed was a auto- pulse(electric fuel pump) and a sight glass inline so you could adjust the drips going into the cook/heater stove. It couldn't have used all that much fuel because, on the 40' boat, we only carried 300 gallons of diesel. We'd be out up to two weeks at a time, depending on how long it took to fill the boat with fish.(It packed 6 tons)
Hope this helps. I have no ides if they still make marine diesel stoves like I'm telling you about but expect they do.
Love your videos. Be careful and all the best to you guys.

Great as usual! Was that segment in the middle, driving up the road past the shy girls edited differently than the rest of the footage? Looked like you used a LUT and some texture? Or was that your color grading? Either way, very nice
Sailing followtheboat
Sailing followtheboat - 6 years ago
Ok, I'll let you into a secret, Mike. That segment was recorded on Liz's camcorder, which can only shoot at 25fps (or 50). I edit on a 30fps timeline. Because there's fast movement in that clip the missing frames are really noticeable, so adding the colour grade helped give a more dream-like quality. An additional 'scratchy' layer was added too. All other footage has a LUT applied, always, as I record in v-log (10 bit). LUTS on the drone footage too as that's recorded in log. It's a real shame I can't change that region on Liz's camera but it's still useful to have. Thanks for the interest and fair winds to you!

Yea infections are something to never mess around with or ignore. It is a huge killer, and is the number #1 killer or issue after surgery. One of the reasons why hospital will keep you in for awhile to monitor and make sure is no signs of infection after a surgery. Anyway glad to hear you nipped it in the bud before it got too bad .. and sounds like was getting bad enough as it was.

Stupidly I ignored it too long, Kevin. Lesson learned.

after trying MMS chlorine dioxide and getting cured from various type of infections with no SIDE effects like herpes virus i had for years, epididimitis, flu , soar throat, etc and in just few days, when using antibiotics or regular medicine used to take weeks, i suggest to all the cruising community this product which works organically and diesel not males bacteria resistant ..is easy ti make, cds the stabilized clo2 is Even better.and stores longer time..b luck

Ricardo is correct. I've been using MMS since 2009 - it should be in everyone's kit- it is an oxidizer (like hydrogen peroxide - but safer) . If you investigate it now - be prepared for a barrage of Trolls using FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt) to direct you back into the herd. Big Pharma does not want an inexpensive outbreak of good health. Go to the Genesis II Forum - a good launch pad for information.

There is a new high-tech foam wound dressing called Mepilex. It is a fancy wonder material that is great for any exuding wounds. It's pretty hard to get for some reason unless you are a physician here in the US. My wife was given some of this dressing for her wounds after her lumpectormy and related exploratory surgeries like removing suspect lymph nodes last summer, and the product is nothing short of miraculous.

We are sourcing more of it to keep in our boat's med kit since it worked so darn well for her. I think it would be perfect for the kind of wound Jamie recently suffered. It isn't even medicated. It is just a special kind of high-tech micro-porous foam that allows the puss and exuding goo from a wound to be rapidly and safely sucked out and away from the wound so it is kept clean inside, but not dried-out, while the body can heal itself under the dressing unfettered by the poisons produced by any infections or whatever. The overnight improvements using this dressing was nothing short of shocking. Not only did the skin heal extraordinarily quickly, but scarring was kept to an absolute minimum which was very nice in the case of my wife as these types of procedures can be quite disfiguring.

Anambas looks different than most other places. I did not see any litter, (if at all), or rubbish, and things seemed very orderly in a clean environment. Their culture must be different than most. Was that your observation as well? On the antibiotics...that is very interesting. The triple antibiotic creams did not work! I would never have guessed. Thanks for the head's up on the Ciprofloxacin. That's one I will add to my kit. On the subject of salt and healing...Epsom Salt may be the salt, (not really salt), to better use for soaking and healing. Something infected needs more than that, though.

Sailing followtheboat - 6 years ago
It was a pretty clean place, yes, though I guess much of that has to do with the fact it is not densely populated, even in the larger towns. I get the impression they do appreciate their natural surroundings.

Close-ups of festering pustules aside, great shots of a fantastic local. Glad you found a cure. It would have been a shame if Jamie had to be put down. ;-)
As a segue I'd be interested in hearing just what is in your med kit. Clearly one needs more than a bandage or two when cruising. Take care, eh.

Perhaps you both could take with you a few bottles of Echinacea it is an oral herb for the Immune System it is unbelievably effective!! Watch it very carefully and YES I am always getting scratched by my little fur babies!! Accidentally of course! However your fur baby has the paws on deck therefore the claws are susceptible to what ever comes from the Ocean Waters that come aboard deck. I highly do recommend the Echinacea for you both!! What a BEAUTIFUL B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L & BREATH-TAKING place to see all of those waterfalls, thank you for taking us along with you!! Drones, I can see, are ONE HANDY TOOL for you Captains to let it go FIRST before you hit on the reef's!! ;) BRILLIANT!! I think they were designed with y'all in mind! ;) Fair Winds & God Speed on the healing of that scratch!!

I have found The clearer and more pristine the water is the more likely you will get tropical infections. Live corals and healthy eco systems breed staph. I get 2 or 3 per year in isolated pristine locations. Seems mine are staph related from cuts i get out of the water as well as in ,turning into a antibiotic course every few months.
Only place i dont get infections is in usa mainland.
My worst was leptospyrosis in thailand. Nearly killed me.
There was recently a thai man in thailand scratched by a cat 3 days later he was in hospital with flesh eating disease he lost his leg a few weeks later and then he lost his life.
So be fuckin carefull man.

Jamie I am glad your leg is better. Here in the states I had a flesh eating infection in a groan lymph node and in the hospital for 2 weeks and about 2 months to heal. Thank you for your time there in these islands and for me there are places best not turned into tourist areas.and this one of them.

So glad you had some antibiotics that took care of your leg infection. I don't think I would be as calm about it as you seem to be. I'd probably be consuming large quantities of alcohol but then again I don't have someone like Liz to keep me on the straight and narrow.

I cut my foot pretty badly on coral in Hawaii (wear reef shoes, duh!), the doctors I spoke with insisted that I shouldn't get in the water or even the sand until it was completely healed....which was difficult to hear, considering I got the wound, and I'm not exaggerating, 30 minutes after we arrived at the beach on our first day. I eventually did take a chance a week and a half later, but only after scaring myself silly reading horror stories online. The bacteria in the water around islands in the tropics is serious business. No open wounds in the water.
S/V Redemption
S/V Redemption - 6 years ago
Salt water, yes. But as CitySurvivor mentioned, what's IN the water no so much. Even in the Chesapeake Bay you get an open bleeding wound you pour peroxide over it, cover or spray a covering over it and NO DIPS in the WATER for 24hrs.
CitySurvivor
CitySurvivor - 6 years ago
There are so many microbes living in a single drop of sea water thou, his infection could have gotten way worst if he had gone for a dip I think.
Frank Sparks

spudboy1328 exactly. You'd think salt water would be healing. Perhaps it can be explained.
