this was interesting from a sailing point of view, but how do you get the sail around the mast is there a zipper ? I hardly can see a system, many are not familiar with this kind of sails (me) how you get them in form with no boom systems ? I like the simplicity . draw backs? is a junkrigg system better? thanks for the videos
Luckyfish Gets Away
Luckyfish Gets Away - 6 years ago
+Bruno Wiebelt - yes there is a zipper, and webbing straps at regular intervals inside the "sock". We have shot a video showing how the Wharram wingsail works including the loose footed sheeting system. Will release it soon as there has been alot of interest in it. Not sure about Junk rigs, many ppl love them. Easy to reef from cockpit, efficient downwind, thats all I know. Cheers, Stew

With this video I have found out that - Sailing around the World is something that pretty much anyone with reasonable health;
A capable paid-for boat, and enough saved up money to live on for the period of time required can accomplish.

Something is missing here, and you are showing it in this video.

From the sailing part of this video you display that there is a sailing genius that some other person possesses, and you are trying to learn from, but it is all technical jargon, and not life altering understanding. 18 hours on the sea should be a life altering experience.

Then, when you show the "no money no honey" portion, I'm wondering how you justify all that you have done. I know it is just video to manipulate the masses but seriously, with all the sailing channels out there what is it that makes your channel better than theirs?

Life altering experiences after complete sacrifice is what sells in a world where ten million people post selfies of everyday experiences.

Warren Cottis; All of us have the opportunity to show the World what it is that each of us believe in, and hope that the people who see the things we portray are interpreted in the way which we intend it to be understood. So often the things we intend to show the World are not interpreted in the way in which we intended our thoughts and actions to be understood. There is a face on every person, and a soul behind every face. Seldom does any person understand the soul behind the face of a person we intimately know the face of. My comment about pulchritude isn't an insult, it is an attempt to help people who read to find the meaning behind the "face" of these videos, and to seek out the "soul" of what it means. There are greater things in the history, and future, of mankind than can be contained within the bounds of this, or any other video on this medium.
Warren Cottis
Warren Cottis - 6 years ago
Hey Ric... I find this post a bit of a mixed message after I "liked" your earlier post here
You are clearly a fan of the channel but you refer to the "lack of pulchritude". Pulchritude sounds horrible but it is actually another word for Beauty...so do you really mean "lack of Beauty"?
What do you think is a possible higher World message to broadcast? Something environmental? I am sincerely interested to know. You wrote so eloquently in the post I liked... but in this one I am confused
Some sailing channels do offer the the possibility of the Easy Dream and if you are very, very Lucky the Dream will not be a Nightmare. The Ocean is a hard taskmaster and there is nothing wrong with accepting the "no money, no honey" meme as Ground Zero.
Ric Gaston
Ric Gaston - 6 years ago
You have the opportunity to influence the very basic foundations of an entire generation of people who have access to this video, at the moment 6583 have viewed this one. For most people this is just a another video about some dude and his sexy wife, and sometimes, other sexy ladies, sailing around with a "legendary" sailor on a boat that is somehow "special" because it is made in a similar way to a nearly forgotten race of people whos descendants now live on islands too many people call "paradise". I believe in what you are doing, and I whole-hardheartedly support it, and want to do it someday myself, but there is something missing from this video, and it isn't just the lack of pulchritude; There is no "you people watching this who I don't know can make your life better if" element in this video. Okay, I'm just ranting now, but words have meaning, and they create things that didn't exist before they were said. It worries me that you broadcast the "no money, no honey" meme.

+Ric Gaston - I did not see the sub-story you did. Perhaps it is our main story. You have a writers mind :-) It was 80 hours on the sea with Rory in this video - life altering? heck yes. Is throwing in our jobs and spending Zaya and my savings on sailing over the last 3 years justified?.... no need to justify but money well spent? heck yes. To tell the story of "why it has been life altering" would take some skill. Not sure I can do that, and even harder through video. I guess our method is simply to open a window, let ppl look in, and then walk away with their own story. Thanks alot for getting me thinking, Stew

excellent! Really love to tips and tricks for the rig. She is very unique and seeing how Rory sets her up was great! Considering spending the money for a spinnaker myself. Love the gaff forward idea too! More please!

Wot? No $20000 boom furling system? No $2500 electric winches? Boat not heeled over at 45 degrees? Ridiculous! Next thing you'll be telling us, you sailed the Atlantic with a couple of catwalk models, only getting out of your hammock for a bottle opener! PffffttttttT! (Cheers Skipper!!!!!)
Luckyfish Gets Away
Luckyfish Gets Away - 6 years ago
+ScubaTony Anschutz Great to hear you got something out of it. The wire luff staysail is exactly the same as the "wee jibby" as Rory called the jib. Same dimensions all round. It's a good sail to have for passage making, when conditions are not suited to having a spinnaker up. Haven't tested it - but would be interesting if our full sail rig with the staysail set is as quick, less quick or quicker than the kite. Spinnaker 49.8m2; Main 20.9m2; Foresail; 20.1m2; Staysail 13.1m2 - so on sail area alone the spinnaker has more horsepower on its own than the 3 sail rig altogether, and sits in clear air. So yes mate, you need to get 4 sails :-). The kite with the sock is quite manageable single handed. I'd watch the conditions though of course.

Luckyfish Gets Away - 6 years ago
+Soggy Bottom - We now have all the sequences to do a 10 Ways episode on the Wing Sails as a few guys have asked about them. I can understand ppl having trouble with them at first, especially on the larger boats. It wasn't easy for us to begin with either. A few details need to be right before you hoist them. I can honestly say they are easy to use. I still hoist both by hand, no purchase system. Only use the winches to peak up the gaffs. We get them setting so sweet. When the wind is up we apply lots of tension to get them working. Now use a triple mainsheet system on the foresail. The loose foot requires it for trimming as the sheets apply leech, foot and trimming angle tensions! Tell tales are key to getting it right. Once the sails are set nice, we get another 0.5 kt or more out of the boat.
Soggy Bottom
Soggy Bottom - 6 years ago
Seconded, ScubaTony. Would also love to hear Cap'n Stew's opinion on the ease of raising or lowering the soft wing sails - some never appear to have a problem, but others appear to have been driven to major mods to make it easier. Also, does the presence of a boom or not really make that much of a difference with regard to sail trimming? Excellent stuff.

Always chuffed to see one of your vids pop up Stewart. I watch most of them multiple times, pausing often to explore every nook and cranny of the boat that I can. You did well to get Rory on board, what a boon! I have a last bought a study plan and am slowly finding myself deeper and deeper into researching options. I'd love to hear about what changes/mods you would make. What are your thoughts on the Dragon and TwoTicks wedge coachroof? Best regards Grant.
Luckyfish Gets Away
Luckyfish Gets Away - 6 years ago
Congrats on the study plans. Your question is about function and form. My view on the wedge is that the form didnt really look right even though the intended function might have been right. Its an aesthetic thing for me, sounds impractical I know but I believe things do need to look right to be right. Hanneke and James nailed the proportions of the Tiki coach roofs. She is so sweet in profile with the beautiful sheer and all that. And I'm 6'3" :-). I get by in the fwd cabins - following the Wharram principle of fitting the human into the boat rather than the boat to the human!

Dan, I suggest that if you are an "older man", with his own boat which you are sailing around on the World - you might want to toss an advertisement out for the World to see, rather than pounding other sailing people who actually have companions that you desire. Stewart, this person, "Dan Elisha", is not someone you should engage with on your channel. Yes, you should allow him to comment, because everyone should have their say, but it does not advance your channel in any way by responding to his insults. You have no need to defend yourself, your videos, your personal life, or your actions to anyone on the internet. You are living your own life as best you know how, and to the best of your ability; It is not, nor has it ever been your responsibility to live your life to the standards other people may have set for you. With that, I'll make a comment of my own above.

In Australia men who have poor dating skills with white women import Asians from the Philipines. The much older men get much younger women to cook clean and fuck, the Asian women get Australian citizenship with the hope that soon he will die, leave them whatever assetts he had and they will then find men in their age group to enjoy life with.I place you under that category.I mean how would a Mongolian beauty ever find a life away from her culture without lechers like you?!

+Dan Elisha Great. Now we are getting somewhere. You are old, a man (with social media like YouTube, we can never be sure of such things) and for us anyway, a little bit puritanical re the female form in sailing videos HOWEVER softcore porn on RedTube is OK for you. With you so far. Just. BTW - your stats re the recent performance of our channel is inaccurate. Go to desktop, right click and click on refresh several times. Then look again. Now, back to my original question. You have been following our channel for close on a year now. We have surprising few trolls like you so give yourself a pat on the back for that. We can see every comment you have made with a simple click of a button. What puzzles us is why do you watch our videos? Would love to hear your answer, but dont worry, no time limit on your reply. Do some deep soul searching, please.
Dan Elisha
Dan Elisha - 6 years ago
Using females as video bait for me is a no no.Thinking that old men like me will fall for that trick is silly seeing as redtube can fulfill any shortfalls in my sex life.I dont see myself as negative so it must be your twisted mindset that frames me like that. The fact is that NO new viewers have emanated in the last 19hours shows me how feeble your videos are! Keep this up and your site will go under before you can say.....

+Dan Elisha You seemed like a quick-witted fellow but I may have overestimated you. Still waiting for an answer. Here's a clue mate. The Bene Firsts are well equipped boats but in your case, missing one important fitting. Head down to your local hardware store, get some adhesive, good strong stuff, and a mirror. Fix it firmly to a bulkhead, where you will wake up and look into it every day. That's where you will find the answer to my question. Also, keep an eye on those keel bolts ;-). I had a Bene once, similar age to yours.

PS 26 is very old to start sailing where I come from.

Luckyfish Gets Away - 6 years ago
+Dan Elisha Congrats on buying a small, affordable (for some folks) boat. That's smart. Re the SEA BEGGING as you call it. I see the merits in the system Patreon have developed. I like the concept of "you may pay" rather than "user pays". One thing to note is the blow back from critics of it is much diminished over the last year as people get used to it and understand how it benefits everyone. Hope to see some positive comments about our content from you at some stage. You follow our channel but all your comments are negative. Why is that?

Just because you feel a conventional lifestyle is the right way to live doesn't mean the rest of the world does. I am happy to throw a tip in for this kind of entertainment. I am sure the time and effort put into it exceeds what you would put into a REAL job. Is your comment because you are jealous? You obviously watched the vid. Why? You have a choice not to. No idea, and yes I can do the numbers, but asking you was easier!
Luckyfish Gets Away
Luckyfish Gets Away - 6 years ago
+daedster1 yes, I called it an estimate. Based on current situation (they are still growing very fast!) . Patreon 15K per vid x 4 vid per month x .66 (ave limit caps from Patrons) - thats $40K per month plus Ad revenue - not all vids monetised due to YT declaring unsuitable for children (true) but lets work on 2,000,000 monetised views per month (current, not historical) and throw in the merch, sponsorships etc - not hard to see $50K gross per month. What do you think they are grossing? much more? much less? Cheers
daedster1
daedster1 - 6 years ago
Is that a guess on that 600k income, I have seen your vids on delos & slv income, but if Yt gives $1.50 per 1k views and patrons income is public how do u come up with 600k?
Luckyfish Gets Away
Luckyfish Gets Away - 6 years ago
Love Elon. Hope he can deliver. He mostly does :-) Outsourcing sounds good but I believe the reality is the bigger channels are investing in much more than post prod. And I believe you do have to invest cold hard cash to get this kind of help. Reality is, everyone is so busy these days its no surprise that only money talks. We have Patrons with the talent to help us but they too have to earn a living. Some serious in-house talent in SV Delos has forged the path with results that speak for themselves. The first channel to "pop" and still the best IMHO although we don't get much of a chance to watch their stuff. Whenever I check in, it looks awesome. With an estimated $600K pa gross income the large channels like these are medium size businesses, with editing, digital marketing, social media savvy peeps working hard and, I would guess, sharing in the results.
