The Unexpected Can Be The Most Enjoyable (Sailing La Vagabonde) Ep. 125

Bye bye to the lovely Josje and Tunisia. Checkout Josjes channel below! http://bit.ly/Ramatree Off we go, sailing upwind for a 260nm journey to Sardinia. On top of that, a broken engine upon our arrival means we received some help upon our arrival. But this has got to be one of my favourite adventures of the year! It’s funny how when things don’t go as smooth as you’d expected, those end up being the best memories. Especially enjoyed the sections on Tunisia, gave a new insight into that area- thanks - but how about a pronunciation debate? Buoy (Boo-ee????) Heard some USA sailors say Booee but not Aussies? Do you say Booeeancy (Buoyancy) or Booeeant (Buoyant)? Buoy = Boy IMHO. Understand the word comes from either middle dutch (boye) as a signal or marker or old Spanish (Boya(r)) - to float. Beating: What close angle to the wind will your outremer do and still make good SOG? Fair winds.

Re: the unusual cold temps: According to Martin Armstrong of armstrongeconomics.com we are just starting into a period of declining solar radiance. This will cause a mini ice age lasting about 30 years. Europe has already had some crops lost due to freezing. This is just the beginning - everyone in latitudes outside the tropics should start preparing. Psychic lady Utsava on yt independently predicted the same thing.

"Weather conditions - awful". Yes. Of course. Sun is shining, enough wind to move the boat, t-shirt-condition... Awful? I have another association for that (rain, snow, ice, 40knt of wind). Ok, wind on the nose, but hey, that's sailing. You should be experiended enough for that. Greetings to paradise.

I stumbled across your channel while I was following "Catchin Rays" and their cat. It was the 22 knot video that caught my attention and I was instantly hooked. I had to start at the beginning and get the whole experience. After watching about four videos a day, I'm finally caught up. Now my wife wants to start watching, so I've started the whole series over again. Great stuff. Your videos have come a long way. I hope Elayna reconsiders the whole vegan thing. I can't help but think that she is bowing to the PC police. She really looked like she enjoyed spearfishing and eating what she caught. It just seems weird that she would give that up overnight. I think she looked a little healthier back then, too. Please take that as constructive criticism. Love you both. You're truly an inspiration to the rest of us. Be safe and have fun.

In my travels to the Middle East, I could not help but fall in love with the sound of the prayers. I had NO idea what was being said. Regardless to your beliefs or faith, it’s beautiful as is the culture. It is hypnotic and very calming. I found myself sitting in the stillness many times, embracing the peaceful feeling that would fall over me and just listened.

Ohh Leave the poor girl alone. She smokes - So what??? Her choice. Doesn't change who she is. You go Josje. You all loved her until you saw a smoke in her hand. What changed. No room for PC'ness on these channels. There's enough in mainstream media as it is. This is a real life video and it's excellent. Great stories, great experiences keep it coming.
Love it all :)

Riley, you need a good size scare over an eye or a patch and then you will have an excellent story to tell. You know why old sailors had so many eye patches? Because they did not have eye protection when doing daytime sites using a sextant. They would look directly into the sun an soon learn their lesson...burned out retina, so then they switched to star sites only.

Fair winds.

Going to learn, buy a boat, live on board, work around the world (I'm an RN). No YouTube vids though. Anyway, you guys are completely inspiring! Love it! Keep up the good work. Watch the movie, the Day After Tomorrow with Dennis Quaid. This is where the notion of the earth will go into a catastrophic Ice Age was borne and pronounced. Hollywood movies like Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth is all one needs to study AGW. Other than that, go to school and study science, real science and then you will be able to refute the hoax that has been beseeched upon us.

You may want to google the "Greatest Scientific Swindle of all Time" to get more info.

Loved the bit of clowning around in the end.
Perhaps you could tell us your intentions. You picked up the boat and I thought you were making your way back to (forgive me on this part) Australia or New Zealand. Yet instead you are wandering about the mediteranean. Yet you mentioned in your vids that you plan to come stateside. Do you plan to sail up the coast when it gets warmer and go the steamship route of England past Iceland over to Greenland and down the states to Florida? Or are you just going to cut across the open sea to the other side? Tho I think if you do go straight across you should get a third as it will help with the watches on the open emptieness.

Your brand new boat seems to be having old boat problems?
RoadRashRay
RoadRashRay - 6 years ago
Pfsif-I don't know what amount of experience you've had operating a boat in a salt sea environment. I have had 20 years experience operating power and sail boats in the Pacific Ocean off the west coast of the US. The salt water and the constant movement and pounding that boats are subjected to starts breaking down machinery and electrical and electronic systems immediately. It is a constant battle requiring ongoing maintenance and repairs to stay ahead of the destructive effects of an ocean environment. It's also important to remember that a modern catamaran of LaVega's class has on board many complicated systems to provide a safe, comfortable, and short handed operation. The cause of the engine failure seems to have been an electronic module that failed. Again, I will emphasize that an environment that is constantly subjecting all systems to salt water, salt spray, and damp salty air, with continuous movement, pounding and vibration is very challenging.
I have to confess to having reached an age where I might be memory challenged. Please remind me of any equipment failures before this recent engine module.-Ray

john hayford

Used to have a Lagoon 470 and now have a mono, in truth I have not noticed much difference in how close we can sail to the wind. Have never understood this issue on cats, maybe the 470 (a big old cruising Cat for those who don't know this one) is better than most but doubt it.

What's the matter with using sails to get into the port ? You got a bow truster anyway… Sea is calm, should use these opportunities to train yourselves.
The Third International Party of Kekistan
The Third International Party of Kekistan - 6 years ago
@Peter Bodifée; Thanks, for your explanations, that's a good answer for me.
Peter Bodifée
Peter Bodifée - 6 years ago
I hear what you say BUT a catamaran is hard to steer at slow speed (due to double hull length) AND it catches a lot of wind, which turns the slightest mistake quickly into a disaster. I sailed a 27ft Wharram Tangaroa without any power other then sails for quite some years and there was only one way we could get it into our spot at the dock. And every time it was full concentration. I would never sail a cat into an unknown harbour without appropriate power available. A monohull is a completely different story: you can almost turn them on a dime and the mass of the ballast will keep you going even if the wind is not in your favour.
The Third International Party of Kekistan
The Third International Party of Kekistan - 6 years ago
Switzerland, makes me a sweet-water captain ;-) but that 30 years ago, on examination we only needed to go to the visitors dock, boat was a small 18 feet-er but we were trained to put the boat right into its "cell", also done with own boat because we run out of electricity for the propulsion.
It's easier when you know were to go, go slowly, keep a hand on dropping the sail, use your momentum and have the paddle (even it's looking pointless) ready.

Perhaps it's the size, which make it more difficult and fearsome, but their should be many boats, around the world and in the past, without a motor doing it.
rudejude87
rudejude87 - 6 years ago
The Third International Party of Kekistan What country are you from? I did my skipper licence in the UK, we had to sail onto a mooring ball with no engine away from all other boats. Practicing in the marina with the engine was only allowed away from all other boats. If we had tried with the sail up in the marina we'd have been told to leave and not come back
The Third International Party of Kekistan
The Third International Party of Kekistan - 6 years ago
13:45 "...foolhardy and dangerous,…" you're kidding me…

I say this because, I had to do it to get my captain's license.
You're contradicting what the official sailing examiner told us .

Either you control the ship or signalize it as uncontrollable.
rudejude87
rudejude87 - 6 years ago
The Third International Party of Kekistan I don't think you can criticise people for taking the safest option. I applaud them for it. I'm sure they would have managed without help as a last resort. I would never dream of practicing sailing my own boat into its berth incase I damage it and other peoples property and get the reputation of the idiot in the marina. I'd ask for help or sail it onto a pontoon or mooring away from everyone and either fix it or wait for help. If I saw you practicing next to my boat I'd go nuts. Even a training boat with lots of crew with fenders and the engine in neutral, I would be pissed
Just Wayne
Just Wayne - 6 years ago
The Third International Party of Kekistan They didn’t get a tow in, they got help turning and getting the boat alongside.
Using sails to get alongside a concrete dock in a 1 million dollar boat when help is available is just foolhardy and dangerous, such actions should be discouraged not bragged about, we don’t encourage sailors to sail into storms to get experience, just in case they happen to end up in one someday, that too would be the actions of a careless captain.
If you have a problem and choose to refuse to ask for help just so you can cowboy in to look cool on YouTube instead of taking the safer for everyone and everything option, you only look stupid if things go wrong.
The Third International Party of Kekistan
The Third International Party of Kekistan - 6 years ago
8:05 before they enter, the sea is calm, there is plenty of space, very good conditions for such a training, "they" will always find excuses to postpone such a drill, until one day there is no assistance, bad conditions or an emergency then the regrets and fears will come up...

Asking for advice is ok, but towing the boat… perhaps not enough wind but then, why not use it's own dinghy?

I did it in tight spaces, with expensive yacht around, it isn't such a big thing, either you're a captain or...
rudejude87
rudejude87 - 6 years ago
Did I say all boats have engines? No I didn't. You said they have a bow thruster. They don't have one. You said the sea is calm. They're in a marina not the sea, so it always looks calm.
All I'm saying is with a disabled engine they did the right thing to ask for help. Practicing in an expensive boat around other expensive boats with a disabled engine is what a moron would do...
The Third International Party of Kekistan
The Third International Party of Kekistan - 6 years ago
You do really believe that every sail boat has a motor?
They don't, not the one on which I made my license, we needed to get into the port only by wind, if you can't do it in calm condition, no license!
rudejude87
rudejude87 - 6 years ago
There is no bow thruster on this boat and it's not a good idea to smash into the dock or other boats for practice. Always wise to ask for help when it's available.
