Hello Hoppers! This video shows you the very BASICS of sailing. Before you go sailing you really need to know what you are doing. I recommend you get training before you hop on to a boat. In this video I give you a very basic introduction to what sailing is all about. I talk about Safety, the Boat, the Sails, Mooring, the Marinas, etc. We stayed at FOUR DIFFERENT MARINAS in Southern England, near the Isle of Wight: Port Hamble, Cowes, Yarmouth, and Port Solent. I first heard that one about why they call it the " boom" from my dad when he taught me how to sail. It was funny until the first time I failed to get my head down during a jibe. Boom! Lesson learned the hard way. Ready to jibe! Jibe O! Haul in that sheet fast! And keep your head down!

You most definitely learned your lesson. Boom!!! When you jibe it all happens so fast if you are inexperienced it is so easy to get hurt or fall, etc. I don't know how to jibe by myself but love to be part of it, help out, so much is happening, and then you have to see how the boat reacts. I live near the water in Florida. I notice that when one sail in play, some favor the jib, others the mainsail, often in the same conditions. Why?

+storybored good question! This goes by preference. They both get the boat moving. For me, the mainsail is harder to pull up. The jib is just easier to handle and I don't need as much strength. Take your pick. Thanks for watching and commenting! Happy sailing!! xxx

MrCosmo314 new boats are very very expensive however. There are lots of boats made in the 1970's 80's and 90's that are still fine boats that can be bought for a fraction of a new boat price. There are even boats for free on places like Craig's list. You might need to be handy with DIY to bring an old boat back into good condition but it can be done.

+MrCosmo314 the boat isn't mine. You can charter a boat (which is renting it) and divide the cost among a group of friends, like we did. Total cost was divided by FIVE PEOPLE. I agree, buying a boat, maintaining it, having it at a marina year-round, using it, etc can be expensive. It also depends where you sail also. Some places are more expensive that others.
