I just bought a Great dane 28, my 1st sail boat, I am a Greenhorn. It's rough. But it came with a good diesel, all the sails I can wish for and a wind auto pilot as a surprise for a total 6000USD.

Bacon Sails! Great marine and sail shop for decent prices. They have used gear and they make custom sails.

Wow. We're neighbors. Ha. I have a Cal 24. I'm on the Magothy River at Fairwinds Marina near Annapolis.
Great videos and discussion.

Yes, it is rare to find items like water makers, good SSB radio systems and wind vanes on used boats. I believe they are removed and sold on the side to mitigate some of the losses generally inherent with buying new and selling used. This is of course facilitated by the thin used gear market in those items. The 10% upkeep rule really is a variable. A 5000 dollar water maker for instance will not generally add 500 pr yr to the upkeep of a boat. Of course a LOT of those costs for upkeep can also be offset by the DIY owners.

Spending money in no way equates with safety. The most expensive race boat can be operated beyond its operational capability.

What location will a boat bring the best price?

I did the very thing your talking about, every boat i looked at and was intterested in, i made an offer that bassically was 50% of the asking price. after a month or so, he excepted my offer, im so very happy with her. I honestly would rather have a boat that i can work on to fit my needs without having it loose resale value. its a 36 Catalina, the one in my avatar. by the way, i love your vids and channel, im a huge fan and always look forward to new vids. thanks.

Any cautions for buying used boats after the 2017 hurricane season? As you check each boat out, are the issues very apparent? If not, what are the most expensive to look for? I heard one of you say the East Coast is not a good market. I'm a Georgia boy, so where do you feel it is best to look? Thanks for the content- it is really phenomenal. P.S. Don't listen to him :)

I have been here from the beginning. Still enjoying the videos BUT, in your intro, you say that you fixed this boat "all by yourself". C'mon,, we all know you had "some" help. I know you may have done the majority but give credit where credit is due. A tour of her inside and out would be nice as well. :-)

While I am a fan as I’m a fixer of old boats currently keeping a 1970 29 and 35 foot boat in good safe condition your really leaving out the big issue of insurance and the fact that you can’t get insurance without a passing a survey and none of these boats would pass a survey

On the 29 I had to move the boat to land I owned and work 18 months without any type of insurance as when it was a 500 dollar boat it had far to many issues and as a Cal 29 owner I know all to well were all the warts are as things like the original fuel tank your using to fuel the outboard will not meet current requirements

"Safety" is relative. Not sailing would be safer. But...where is the fun in that?

Based mostly on MY skill level (which is MUCH less than yours)...I would feel comfortable on a similarly equipped boat for coastal cruising and some carefully timed overnight passages. *I* would not take that boat on a blue water crossing. But others have, and others will, and it can be done "safely." Maybe when I learn more... ;) .

Interesting conversation. Some good advice and some not so good. For viewers thinking of buying a boat or getting into sailing, take the advice given in this video and place it in context with the rest of your research. Aubrey has made this work for her and I applaud her for that. For my first sailboat I did things a little differently, which doesn't make me right, just different. The important take a way here is if you want to go sailing you can.

Should change his tune :-)
