Tips on Tuesday : How not to hit the reef! The Forward Looking Sonar

Aquarius was fitted with an Echo Pilot 2D forward looking sonar. We use the Echo Pilot every time we are close to shore, or in areas with a depth less than 30 to 40 meters. The Echo Pilot has saved us from hitting the reef two times, and made us feel safe while anchoring, and moving the boat in shallow waters. This is a short video about how the Echo Pilot works, and how we used it.

Interesting, I’ve only ever read one article about fls and it concluded that it wasn’t worth having as by the time the signal returned and you were alerted to an obstacle you would have already hit it! Even at low speed! Thanks for sharing and safe passage.

Very important video Ken, it will safe many lives, but why don't boat manufacturers install this important instrument in the first place to safe people and their boats?!

Thanks for the tip, I will consider getting a forward looking sonar when I get my own boat.
I was watching another sailing channel just before your vid and their keel hit a rock but were lucky to notice it right before impact.

Very interesting. That certainly paid for itself. I wonder what the next generation upgrade will provide, a possible 2d image of what's in front?
I like these tech videos. Thanks.

They make a 3D version, but it's much more expensive. I think the 2D version is good enough for me. Sometimes I'll turn from side to side, and do a loop when looking for a good place to drop the anchor.

Thank you! I have been waiting for a video on FLS and cruising yachts! Does it have a feature that sounds an alarm at certain depths?

Yes, and I have mine set to 5 meters. That is the beeping sound you hear when we were leaving the anchorage North of Lombok.

Very enjoyable video. Why not discuss the units available for sailing vessels and the costs. Is installation difficult? Can an owner do it, or does it require professional help. Thanks for the video & stay safe.
