Sorry, but very disappointing.

No they don't. They don't meet. And furthermore, the air on both sides travels exactly the same distance. Actually, the air touching the sail doesn't really move at all.

It is important to understand that the volume of the air deflected behind the sail can be much greater than the volume of air deflected before the sail. The sail works like a scoop -- scooping some air and moving it aside -- but this is only a fraction of the potential. The rest is generated by the low pressure behind the sail. That's why correct positioning of genoa is so important, not because it moves a lot of air by itself, but because it assists the main sail in moving the air behind it in an organized flow.
