Now we're going to talk about the mainsail. How to put it up, and the things to look for. I've got the amazing Suzanne here to help me, so I have some crew and I love that. First thing we're going to do is loosen up the main sheet which allows the boom both to rise and line up with the wind. That's important because if you don't you're gonna have these battens catching up in these lazy jacks Which is considered bad juju. So anyway, the amazing Suzanne reaches behind her and loosens up the main sheet allowing the boom to rise. And you can see it come up right now. Now it's gonna tend to swing in line with the wind. Next thing we're going to do, Suzanne is gonna come up here. She's going to work on the fall of the main halyard. The fall of course being the side of the block and tackle assembly that's coming down to the deck. What she's gonna do, she's going to take up on her winch while I swept the sail. Now I'm going to pull on this, but not down. I'm gonna pull back in down kinda like an arc this gives me a lot of force like a bow and arrow. And then Suzanne will take up the slack kinda like a heave ho! So here we go. Down. She takes up my slack. There we go. Give me slack here. There you go, that's the way. Good. That's it.You hold, I pull. Notice you can put a lot of weight into this raise. We're almost there... Now we gotta clean raise. Once we're up this high we can finish it off at the winch. So we're gonna come back here we finish off our tightening now. Notice how we pull on the halyard the sail goes tight along the luff. If I make it too tight, you'll find a vertical wrinkle that travels all the way to the mast - we don't want that. We want it just tight enough. The questions always how tight? The answer's always just tight enough!
