WORST NIGHT EVER ON OUR SAILBOAT! Ep 86

βΆ Check out my gear on Kit: https://kit.com/followtheboat Was this the worst night ever on our sailboat? Well folks, the followtheboat crew has NEVER experienced such an uncomfortable night sleeping on a sailboat! This episode also contains some sailing, stormy weather, naughty local boys and the funniest welcome yet in the Anambas islands. :) Some say sailing in Muslim countries is dangerous, but the only dangerous thing we found was a very rolly anchorage! Sailing around the world and checking in and out of countries is always a challenge. In the Anambas it seemed simple to begin with, then we hit the Customs Office... We move to a couple of new anchorages, then anchor in 20m in "the fjord", surrounded by reefs and rain forest, and a fishing village. Yes, SV Delos is the only other sailing channel I watch regularly (we support each other on Patreon) and I agree that they have good sensibilities to the places they go and people they meet.
Peace and fair winds!
Congratulations and God bless you

That was some crazy rocking on the boat. I understand why y all didn't get any sleep.
also, some places that you can visit in Anambas such as Durai Island(where you can see turtles), Nongkat Island(place for snorkeling), Penjalin Island( nice beach).
Hope you enjoy your last visit there.
Thanks
Personally, having lived for 15 years in China, visited other countries, I felt much safer in Buddhist countries. BUT, you never know who is brain-washing the young Muslim generation in that part of the world. You are infidels to them, which puts you at their will! Remember that.
The finger and F...You to foreigners is a deliberate sign of disrespect, and those little boys have been taught this by someone!
Wow... I've go to admit I'm amazed that such a short really nice video that showed a couple of cheeky kids while visiting some islands has brought out some of the reactions it has.
Well, TBH I'm not really, unfortunately for whatever reason I feel it will always be so.
It appears that acceptance and respect for others is still missing from so many peoples world view.
On a better note, Great video.
Well, that's one way to look at it I suppose.
I would not be surprised if the kids have leaned the "F**K You" from a Western Tourist who thinks it's funny to teach children to swear ?? ..Maybe not, but don't make so many assumptions about people you don't know, especially kids...
Your post comes across as presumptuous and wrong.
In our videos we try to reflect what we encounter. It's not always good, but most of the time it is.
Peace and fair winds!
As for kids hurling profanities, that happens everywhere, doesn't it? We know cruisers who make a point of learning insults in the language of every country they visit! These guys would almost certainly have learned the words from fishermen. There was no malice, just smiles. They held my hand and fussed around me when I slipped on a wet path, showing concern and support.
Yes, BTW, we've heard about the 1000 islands and hope to stop there when we head back to Indonesia. They're a lot more developed than Anambas. I wonder if your friend knows anything about the Anambas, it would be interesting to hear his perspective.
Peace and fair winds!
Keep up the great videos, we do love seeing the sights and people you show.
More like this please.
And watch out for that corral without reliable gps maps. Seat of the pants stuff.
Like to see how you weave through the bommies...
Great episode!
I also think you misunderstood those youngsters. They were just showing their support for their local education academy, Foq University, aka Foq U.
Haha, those children had certainly be taught by somebody, my guess it's the fishermen who make up about 90% of the local men.
Peace and fair winds!
A little tip... There's a pocket of amazing islands just North of Jakarta called 1000 islands. Some real Paradise islands there (Bali cannot compare!), but you'll want to stay clear of the islands further south due to the amount of trash floating around in the water.
One of them tossed a clear plastic Starbucks coffee cup up on the deck that magically landed standing straight up. The cup was filled with a clear yellow liquid. I thought to myself, tea, whisky or pee? I picked the cup up, held it up in the piercing sunlight for a look and then gave it a reluctant little sniff.
It had an extremely heavy scent of the sea and felt as cold as ice in my hand.
I placed the cup back down on the deck and scurried down below to get my turkey baster. I thought, I should test it, be it an elixir or something perhaps more sinister.
The f*** you, still lingered on me with an eerie sort of wonder.
With great caution and not so steady of hand, I poked the turkey baster through the straw hole and extracted a few drops of the liquid.
Realizing I had not given much thought on how to test it. So, I fiqured, I will let loose with a few drops overboard into the water. As soon as the first drop hit the water, the water rippled out like there was wind on it and in an instant, there was a fair wind filling the sails.
I now thought, this was cup was better than gold, but the F*** you, I received from the mermaids, made no sense to me. Days later and just hours from my south Pacific destination the wind leaves me just as quickly as it found me.
I quickly get out the cup of liquid gold, I let loose a drop on to the sea and nothing happens. I try again and again with no success. I poured out the remaining liquid from the cup and still nothing.
I gave the empty cup a sniff, this time it had the scent of a 30 year old single malt wiskey. I put my finger in the cup, roll it around getting it good and wet for a taste of it. I give it another sniff off my finger, it smelled great. So, on my tongue it goes.
( sorry, my mom is calling for lunch, will finish later )
It was whiskey and it was the smoothest ever. My body instantly felt drunk, but my mind still felt sober, it was very strange. With crossed fingers, I went to the ignition praying the Beta would start....it did! Then while going forward and still feeling drunk to drop the head sail. I tripped over nothing landing on deck with my head haning over. I could see that the water was shallow and I must be over an uncharted reef or Im wayoff on my position. I run aft to engage reverse and upon doing so the Beta stalls. I look in the water aft because I hear water rushing as if it was a river or waterfall.
I could see that there was very narrow strong current just like a river. Bad Latitude ( my boat ) was rushing away in the current away from the reef and out to the deep.
I soon realized that the poured liquid from the cup, must have created this phenomenon and saved me from the reef. Not to mention, how the wind just up and stopped too.
Once back out in the deep, the wind fills my sails once again.
Later, safely in a protected bay, I snorkel down to check the hook on the sandy bottom. All good, but then on my way to surface, I get stung by a jelly. Im in pain and barely make the short swim back. As I climbed on the deck the stinging was horrible, and unbearable. Then I see the cup, filled once again with a yellow, amber colored liquid. This time without thinking about it, I picked up the cup. It was warm to the touch this time. In pain, I just poured it on my sting and the sting fled in an instant. Now, without even trying to give it a sniff, I could smell that it was pee. I had heard that pee neutralizes jelly stings, but never believed it, until now.
The cup sat empty for days on deck as I sat in wonder of it.
Then on one quiet, calm and beautiful day. I heard several distant voices all at once say, F*** you.
As I lift my head, extenting an ear, and looking around like a sea bird. I see a shiny object flying through the air, it hits the backstay. It twirls around it as it slides down it and lands on my lap. Its a pair of very nice sunglasses. I think the frames are titanium and indeed they are as I picked them up, they are as lite as a feather. At this point, I dont think the mermaids have a single clue as to what F*** you even means. So, once again filled with wonder, I begin to move the sunglasses up to my face and just before I put them on, the Starbucks cup stands up and the mermaid logo begins to change it shape and color from green to red.
( got to go now, will continue later )
Thanks for the compliment!
