WORST NIGHT EVER ON OUR SAILBOAT! Ep 86

β–Ά Check out my gear on Kit: https://kit.com/followtheboat Was this the worst night ever on our sailboat? Well folks, the followtheboat crew has NEVER experienced such an uncomfortable night sleeping on a sailboat! This episode also contains some sailing, stormy weather, naughty local boys and the funniest welcome yet in the Anambas islands. :) Some say sailing in Muslim countries is dangerous, but the only dangerous thing we found was a very rolly anchorage! Sailing around the world and checking in and out of countries is always a challenge. In the Anambas it seemed simple to begin with, then we hit the Customs Office... We move to a couple of new anchorages, then anchor in 20m in "the fjord", surrounded by reefs and rain forest, and a fishing village. Peace and fair winds! *************************************** If you enjoy or have even learned something from our videos, please SUBSCRIBE to our channel, and if you really like our work maybe throw us a bone... I only just found you guys, having almost given up on the sailing channels, and I absolutely LOVE your spirit! Too many people get caught up in their own story and forget that the real treasures in the world are the people we meet and the lives we get to touch. After reading through some of the comments and your replies, I'm delighted to see how open and grounded you both are, and I'm totally hooked. Keep doing what you're doing, and hopefully we'll both wind up in the same anchorage and can share a beer (or two or three :)

Joseph Vance [Liz] It's funny, when you start out on this kind of sailing adventure, fresh from burnout at work and home, all you can think of is perfect deserted islands. But after 11 years, our most cherished memories are of the people we've met along the way.
Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Thanx for the Upload. Not only did you get 'the finger' from those kids but the one in the Man City football shirt gave you guys the 'pistol to the head' sign! I'd be fairly uncomfortable in those settings myself - its obviously a Very Religious (Muslim) orientated culture, and we all know that tensions between Islam and Westerners (Christians) is at an all time high right now!?
All the same, thank you again, take care.

English is not widely spoken in indonesia. Majority indonesian only know four english words in their life 'yes' 'no' 'i love you' and ' f word because we watch hollywood movie. Those words are the most used words in media. And most of people don't know the meaning of that words. So if a village kid say f word it because only that word he could catch from the movie he watch, he wants to show off about his english. Not a sign he hates you or wanna do harm. Great video. Love.

Not yet! Anchoring properly is SO important, and you really don't want your boat to move anywhere when you're not on it. This is a basic skill you must master before owning a boat. If the weather kicks off in an anchorage you'll see a stream of sailors racing back to their boats! Liz

Also, when you anchor, have u ever come back to the boat,to find it has drift off anywhere, how secure are anchor points ??

It's not difficult, usually. You just plan for it. Sometimes you need a visa in advance, sometimes you don't. All countries have websites which tell you what to do. All countries have ports of entry for checking in yachts. Noonsite.com is a useful resource, and other boaters. Liz

Sailing followtheboat
Sailing followtheboat - 6 years ago
I think we've answered this loads of times in the comments... When you sign clearance documents in some countries, particularly from India to SE Asia (in our experience), they like you to stamp the document. Sailboats get them made, some with the boat's name and some with logos etc. (Liz@ftb)

Another great video. The people you meet on your travels are the greatest reason to travel in the first place. I’ve spent a good deal of time sailing the waters you’re in now only it was in the late β€˜70s and β€˜80s. The Thai coastline was then much like the Anambas, which are little changed from the way they were then. Cell phones and the Internet have impacted even some of the most remote places on earth. That’s the biggest change I notice between the and now. The Khumbu Region of Nepal, home to many of the Sherpas, was much as it had been in 1700 when I first climbed to Everest Base Camp in 1972. Now, with cell service to the summit of Everest, it is utterly transformed. The Thai Coast is literally unrecognizable. But you guys are doing it the right way and your down to earth sensibilities are a joy to behold. Your not tourists on a boat but explorers by sea. Thanks profoundly for giving me a chance to revisit some of the haunts of my younger sailing days with folks I’d be proud to have as shipmates. So tired of the drones and bad music of tourists like the Vagabonds. Only you and Brian, Kazza & Brady on Delos really travel as both sailors and explorers. Namaste and fair seas.
Sailing followtheboat
Sailing followtheboat - 6 years ago
[Liz] We imagined that Thailand must have been very much like the Anambas decades ago, so it's good to know we were along the right track. I'm glad we are able to take you back to places you have visited, that's brilliant.
Yes, SV Delos is the only other sailing channel I watch regularly (we support each other on Patreon) and I agree that they have good sensibilities to the places they go and people they meet.
Peace and fair winds!

I feel so bad for your little cat when the boat was rocking back and forth so hard like that. How does she not get hurt or sick? Does she ever get to go ashore with you?
Sailing followtheboat
Sailing followtheboat - 6 years ago
[Liz] I know! We weren't worried, though, because she's a proper salty sea cat, and when conditions are rough she finds one of her many, cosy hidey-holes on the boat and settles down. She doesn't get sick, and when we returned to the boat she was her usual self. :)

Hi Jamie and Liz, can you tell us more about the boat stamp? Here in the Med they only ask for Registration papers and Insurance and a passport if you are entering the EU. What do they want to see on the 'boat stamp'? Thanks and love the videos!
Sailing followtheboat
Sailing followtheboat - 7 years ago
+Sailing Shantaram [Liz] It was once we left the Med and headed east that we started using a boat stamp. Many officials like you to stamp their documents with the name of your boat and reg. no. You can get a printer or stationer to make one up for you. They're fun to design! Peace and fair winds!

If you ever sail into the Great Lakes someday and come to Chicago you might want to avoid Monroe Harbor right downtown whenever there is a SE wind of over 5kts. There is absolutely zero protection from that direction. It's brutal. At least we maybe have been toughened up a little by the experience.

Great job Jamie and Liz, your doing much to bridge the gap in foreign relations. The people are lovely and don't let people tell you otherwise. You are great foreign ambassadors so remain patient and face miles of trials with smiles. Maybe find someone who speaks a little English and bring them along to the official places, just seeing a familiar face with you dispels most anxiety. Even the officials seem naturally curious and don't seem to harbor any ill will, in fact they seem quite friendly to me.

Word is the "Fuck you" finger comes from the battle of Agincourt in 1415. It comes from the French chopping off the middle fingers of the English bowmen. Then the English stood up and showed their middle fingers to the French that they could still "pluck the yew". Of course after 600 years of both French and English history, the story could have been distorted. (I imagine the French want to cover up some things after they lost)
Ric Gaston
Ric Gaston - 7 years ago
Americans, and the English. Two cultures separated by a common language. (several noted sources) Wanker in America would be a masturbatory act. A visit to A&E, in America is time on a network television channel, and incidents in a car in America - road rage - usually ends up when we all draw down on the offender and start shootin'. (not really)
Sailing followtheboat
Sailing followtheboat - 7 years ago
One area the Americans haven't quite got the hang of is the word, and corresponding gesticulation, 'wanker'. I've come across a few American TV shows where they've used the word 'wanker' quite inappropriately. In the UK it's pretty derogatory but the Americans see it as cute slang, even a fun word of endearment. It isn't. Call someone a wanker in the UK and you can guarantee a visit to A&E. Best used in a car when someone cuts you up but you can escape in safety if it riles them to anger. See 'bus wanker' on the TV show 'The Inbetweeners' (British version, of course) for further reference.
Ric Gaston
Ric Gaston - 7 years ago
I think the Brits should have stuck to the original plan with the two finger thing. Those damn Americans influencing the entire population of the world with their culture, as they have. Something should be done about that.
Sailing followtheboat
Sailing followtheboat - 7 years ago
There are loads of myths and stories about the English "two fingered salute" (it's two fingers in Britain, by the way, the 'V' sign backwards) most of which go back to the 100 years war. But most have been de-bunked, the main reason being that English longbowmen used three fingers. There's never been a definitive answer to where it originated. The American 'finger' is another thing entirely (that's what the kids were using) but, of course, the rest of the world uses the middle finger now, as we do in Britain too!

+Hiber Xen [Liz] There's nothing at all wrong with Muslim countries, which is what we try to show in our videos. We have been sailing in mostly Muslim countries for 11 years now and spend a lot of time trying to dispel the myths some people have about what it is like to live in places like Turkey, Malaysia and Indonesia. We have always received an extraordinary warm welcome and have made many friends. Peace and fair winds!

Great video! Refresh my memories 25 yrs ago when I sailed to this beautiful island from Singapore. Everything seems the same as before without changes. Actually you can anchor very close to the town center. Try not to go there during the North East monsoon period because directly open to South China Sea.

When we checked out we anchored about as close as you can get! We were the only boat there so it was easy and the weather was clement. In this episode there were a number of boats at anchor so we had to anchor out... and right in the path of that swell. Glad it brought back some memories for you. I shouldn't think it has changed much.

Jamie - I just wanted to follow up on your plotter issue re your vessel been shown anchored over an island. I wonder if you are a victim of β€˜datum shift’ - normally plotters resolve GPS position datum (normally WGS 84) with the chart datum of the loaded charts. I wonder if the chart set have been loaded with the β€˜wrong chart datum’ - there should be a procedure (within the plotter) for checking and resolving this.

In fact Navionics is littered with annotations explaining that the anchor marks are in the correct place, even though they appear on land. I've got in touch with Navionics about this as C-map is correct but didn't get a particularly positive reply.

To be fair on the kids, they probably have little exposure to English speaking culture. We make it very clear to our kids that these particular words are taboo. These kids haven't had the benefit of that. To them, it's just a naughty word, and what is more fun than being naughty? I doubt they would do the same thing with the bahasa equivalent.

Exactly as you said sir! for them, saying the F word is just to sounds "cool", how they found out about F word? 1st movie, 2nd some teenager who studied outside of the Island when they came back they will start to teach something rediculous to kids. How did I know this? well... I'm one of the citizen of Tarempa(capital city of Anambas). And I can say that those kids( even some teenagers) don't even know the meaning of F word and I do appologize for what those kids said to you.
also, some places that you can visit in Anambas such as Durai Island(where you can see turtles), Nongkat Island(place for snorkeling), Penjalin Island( nice beach).
Hope you enjoy your last visit there.

Who is to say what is taboo to these children? Teachers? Parents? What have these children been taught? They aren't in a "Western" country. They are in a muslim country, and have been taught to think as muslims. Everything "western" to them is "evil", and they have been raised to hate anything that isn't islam. Is that fair? They have no choice. The day is coming when they will overcome the rest of the World.

+Thomas Fundgrube [Liz] Not at all. We've given bribes where it is accepted practice in many places. It used to be ubiquitous in Indonesia, but things have changed recently. Indonesia, largest Muslim population in the world... a friend of mine (ethnic Chinese) lives near Jakarta operating a fish farm. He told me that the prettiest places are, what#s called, the 1000 islands.
Personally, having lived for 15 years in China, visited other countries, I felt much safer in Buddhist countries. BUT, you never know who is brain-washing the young Muslim generation in that part of the world. You are infidels to them, which puts you at their will! Remember that.
The finger and F...You to foreigners is a deliberate sign of disrespect, and those little boys have been taught this by someone!

How right you are in that Twain quote, from the exit notes inΒ his best selling book, about "Travel being fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness". I just read it yesterday, in The Innocents Abroad. So much of that book has absolutely nothing to do with anything that was happening when he wrote it in 1870, as a series of newspaper articles; But so much of what he wrote is so applicable today that we cannot deny the words he penned 150 years ago.
James Westhart
James Westhart - 7 years ago
Non-sense, simple people just don't want to be exploited by westerners or outsiders. Look what's happened to Papua New Guinea and Irian Jaya with foreign gold mining operations. The actions of the children have been perpetrated by western media and have nothing to do with their culture or traditional values. Enough said, respect is the answer. Jamie and Liz are doing a fabulous job of bridging the gap.
Ric Gaston
Ric Gaston - 7 years ago
I love Twain myself, however, after having read so much of his writing, I have found one needs to stand back a bit from each word he is quoted as saying, and look at the bigger picture of what he meant withΒ the words he wrote. Twain also said that "Golf is a good walk in a beautiful park, ruined." Everyone should be careful "quoting" words from writers because most of the "quotes" have larger context than the words within the "quotation" marks. Nevermore; Thus quoth the Raven (Edgar Allen Poe). No, it wasn't stated in his words, but thus was the implicationΒ within theΒ poem. It wasn't that no one would ever read the words, it was that nevermore would they be understood. Pick up the Twain book of his writings on his voyage in 1870 published as The Innocents Abroad. It is positively brilliant. From the words of this book, In this direction is my ambition.
Sailing followtheboat
Sailing followtheboat - 7 years ago
[Liz] I've read a lot of Mark Twain, but that's not the issue. The reason for introducing his quote was its sentiment, rather than the man himself. I love this quote.
Ric Gaston
Ric Gaston - 7 years ago
Hang on there. Mark Twain said many things about many people, and many places. Most of what Mark Twain wrote is not allowed in American schools today. Not because it is wrong, but because it is not "politically correct" in the "world" today. Mark Twain always tossed a bit of humor at the "political correctness" in his day in everything he wrote. If you look over the work of Twain, you will find a composite of writings castigating everything non-American, and American, as well. Twain hated everything, and everyone, and every document, and every monument, and every man made artifact, and in the 150 years since he wrote his last word, we should understand he was not far from wrong (yes, wrong is the right word there, if you know Twain). You cannot quote Twain if you don't understand the backside of his words.

+jon cund Being invaded, conquered, divided and ruled by force can make people pretty annoyed. First the Dutch, then the Japanese (who some Indonesians welcomed, initially believing they would liberate them from their old masters, before they discovered the full extent of Japanese plans for Indonesia). I don't think you can isolate one atrocity from the rest of a nation's history. I'm not sure how much of this hatred remains for the Dutch? Is there evidence for this?

I meant to of said the indigenous people attacked, killed and massacred the dutch people living there after ww2, could consider it a genocide, rounding up dutch women children men and killing them, in a much more savage way than most other nations trying to gain independence. +Prof. MO Zeee JCD ECS [Liz] I'm not comfortable making generalisations about countries or religions. Our experience of living and cruising in predominantly 'Muslim' countries for the last 11 years has been positive. We've been welcomed into people's homes and businesses everywhere from Turkey to Yemen, the Maldives, Malaysia and now Indonesia. Most people are just trying to feed their families, find a roof to live under, and to educate their kids, irrespective of country or religion.
As for kids hurling profanities, that happens everywhere, doesn't it? We know cruisers who make a point of learning insults in the language of every country they visit! These guys would almost certainly have learned the words from fishermen. There was no malice, just smiles. They held my hand and fussed around me when I slipped on a wet path, showing concern and support.
Yes, BTW, we've heard about the 1000 islands and hope to stop there when we head back to Indonesia. They're a lot more developed than Anambas. I wonder if your friend knows anything about the Anambas, it would be interesting to hear his perspective.

Why not throw out a stern anchor and align yourselves so your bow into the swell you'll never get it perfect because of the tidal depth change and current, but I would assume much better than taking the swell beam on. Anywho, nice vid.

Good idea in a safe anchorage, Ray, but the bottom is fouled with so many objects that we were concerned we'd have problems weighing our main anchor, let alone a second one. Another boat there pulled up an old anchor attached to an engine block and it's littered with all kinds of crap on the sea bed. In those conditions the last thing we wanted was dealing with two fouled anchors.

You need to get your "Christian" asses away from that muslim place before they kidnap, and behead you for being an infidel. Those kids who were giving you the finger were not kidding. They are likely the same ones who beheaded Jurgen Kantner. This is no joke. You need to get out of that part of the World. They will smile to your face, flip you off, and then cut your head off. Islam isn't the propaganda you have been lead to believe is the "religion of peace". I hope you make it out of there. Ric Gaston

I've thought about this before responding, and I do not intend to pass judgment on you in this response.Β I find myself disappointed in your confession to not be Christian. You may have another Faith to which you are not confessing here. Do not misunderstand this as being a judgment on my part. You are free to choose as you wish, or deny "religion" entirely. I'm not here for the purpose of tellingΒ you what is right or wrong. I fully support you traveling where ever you desire to venture. My concern isn't for your eternal soul, which you have pointed out, is none of my concern, but for your physical body, which I hope you will continue to live within as long as isΒ possible. As a Christian myself, it is within my faith to offerΒ attention to any individual, of any faith - or none -Β of danger to their life, where I may see it happening. I will not pray for you, as you have requested that I not do that. I will wish you luck, and good fortune in your travels through what I consider to beΒ a valley of death. Perhaps you will find understanding within the valley, or perhaps after passing through it. Only tomorrow can tell.

[Liz] I'd just like to clear up a few misapprehensions... I'm not Christian. No-one's being beheaded anywhere round here. Jurgen Kantner was in the predominantly Christian country of the Philippines (approx 2058km away, around 1278 miles) when he was killed by Abu Sayyaf. The Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia are working together to eradicate and fight Abu Sayyaf. I've been 'flipped off' in the UK by kids who really knew what they were doing and what it meant.

Another great video even if there was no bikinis, beaches or sunshine. I realize that when visiting someone's country you follow their routines when it comes to paperwork but is there a magic bible that lets cruisers know where to check in, what to have with you and such? I'd hate to take a tour of the local dungeon because I went to the wrong office.
I also think you misunderstood those youngsters. They were just showing their support for their local education academy, Foq University, aka Foq U.
Sailing followtheboat
Sailing followtheboat - 7 years ago
[Liz] There are lots of ways to find out about local routines. Noonsite.com has lots of information for each port in each country, constantly being updated by cruisers. Other yachties you meet along the way are happy to help and share. There are forums, particularly on Facebook, which can be useful. We use Navionics charts, which allows sailors to annotate and add information. Jamie added the location of all the offices on the data for future visitors. It doesn't matter if you go to the offices in the wrong order, they just send you off to the right place!
Haha, those children had certainly be taught by somebody, my guess it's the fishermen who make up about 90% of the local men.

I got a F*** you from a small pod of young mermaids once while drifting in four days of the stillest doldrums ever. I looked back at them with a puzzled look that soon turned into a gleam of wonder and lust.
One of them tossed a clear plastic Starbucks coffee cup up on the deck that magically landed standing straight up. The cup was filled with a clear yellow liquid. I thought to myself, tea, whisky or pee? I picked the cup up, held it up in the piercing sunlight for a look and then gave it a reluctant little sniff.
It had an extremely heavy scent of the sea and felt as cold as ice in my hand.
I placed the cup back down on the deck and scurried down below to get my turkey baster. I thought, I should test it, be it an elixir or something perhaps more sinister.
The f*** you, still lingered on me with an eerie sort of wonder.
With great caution and not so steady of hand, I poked the turkey baster through the straw hole and extracted a few drops of the liquid.
Realizing I had not given much thought on how to test it. So, I fiqured, I will let loose with a few drops overboard into the water. As soon as the first drop hit the water, the water rippled out like there was wind on it and in an instant, there was a fair wind filling the sails.
I now thought, this was cup was better than gold, but the F*** you, I received from the mermaids, made no sense to me. Days later and just hours from my south Pacific destination the wind leaves me just as quickly as it found me.
I quickly get out the cup of liquid gold, I let loose a drop on to the sea and nothing happens. I try again and again with no success. I poured out the remaining liquid from the cup and still nothing.
I gave the empty cup a sniff, this time it had the scent of a 30 year old single malt wiskey. I put my finger in the cup, roll it around getting it good and wet for a taste of it. I give it another sniff off my finger, it smelled great. So, on my tongue it goes.

Sailing followtheboat ( continued )
It was whiskey and it was the smoothest ever. My body instantly felt drunk, but my mind still felt sober, it was very strange. With crossed fingers, I went to the ignition praying the Beta would start....it did! Then while going forward and still feeling drunk to drop the head sail. I tripped over nothing landing on deck with my head haning over. I could see that the water was shallow and I must be over an uncharted reef or Im wayoff on my position. I run aft to engage reverse and upon doing so the Beta stalls. I look in the water aft because I hear water rushing as if it was a river or waterfall.
I could see that there was very narrow strong current just like a river. Bad Latitude ( my boat ) was rushing away in the current away from the reef and out to the deep.
I soon realized that the poured liquid from the cup, must have created this phenomenon and saved me from the reef. Not to mention, how the wind just up and stopped too.
Once back out in the deep, the wind fills my sails once again.
Later, safely in a protected bay, I snorkel down to check the hook on the sandy bottom. All good, but then on my way to surface, I get stung by a jelly. Im in pain and barely make the short swim back. As I climbed on the deck the stinging was horrible, and unbearable. Then I see the cup, filled once again with a yellow, amber colored liquid. This time without thinking about it, I picked up the cup. It was warm to the touch this time. In pain, I just poured it on my sting and the sting fled in an instant. Now, without even trying to give it a sniff, I could smell that it was pee. I had heard that pee neutralizes jelly stings, but never believed it, until now.
The cup sat empty for days on deck as I sat in wonder of it.
Then on one quiet, calm and beautiful day. I heard several distant voices all at once say, F*** you.
As I lift my head, extenting an ear, and looking around like a sea bird. I see a shiny object flying through the air, it hits the backstay. It twirls around it as it slides down it and lands on my lap. Its a pair of very nice sunglasses. I think the frames are titanium and indeed they are as I picked them up, they are as lite as a feather. At this point, I dont think the mermaids have a single clue as to what F*** you even means. So, once again filled with wonder, I begin to move the sunglasses up to my face and just before I put them on, the Starbucks cup stands up and the mermaid logo begins to change it shape and color from green to red.

( got to go now, will continue later )

Sorry, but I can't find your video where you talked about your video gear. Your videos are so crystal clear and sharp, it's fantastic! So may be again the same question, what camera do you use and what type of gimbal? Thank you :-)

That sign at 2:39 that says "no tipping" means you better tip or you'll wait a long time.

Wonderful. I probably sound like a broken record. I assume plumbing drains straight down into the water? How is the water quality in these bays? Cheers and thanks! :-)

"How is water quality in these bay?" .......rather shitty
Sailing followtheboat
Sailing followtheboat - 7 years ago
[Liz] There is no plumbing anywhere in the Anambas, it's all straight into the sea either through an open hole in the boards, or with a squatter over the hole. There are very few people living here, it gets deep quite quickly with a strong tide and no-one uses toilet paper. I'm not sure what this means for the environment or how bad the pollution would be?

Have you still not tried setting up a swell bridle?
Sailing followtheboat
Sailing followtheboat - 7 years ago
Hi Andrew. I remember you telling us about it and I remember checking some links and guides. I also remember thinking 'we must try this'! Since then, despite some rolling now and then we've not felt like we've needed it but this time it would have been very useful (though I'm not sure of the practicality given the location). Perhaps we can do a feature on this technique when we have a bit more time.

A flopper stopper is something else. I see that the swell is taking Esper on the beam, the worst case scenario. A swell bridle will turn the bow/stern to the swell and decrease rolling massively. I've seen Esper rolling at anchor with the swell on the beam several times since I recommended you set up a swell bridle and am somewhat baffled that you have never tried it. I'm sure you have all that is needed on the boat so it won't cost you anything, just a few mins to set it up. I've told a few other sailing vloggers that I've seen suffering in a rolly anchorage about a swell bridle and those that tried it were surprised how much it reduces rolling and were very thankful. ;-)

[Liz] It is an inspirational place. Really gives you time and space to think about life. There's lots more to come, we were so blown away by the Anambas that we want to bring as much detail as possible to our posts. Thanks for commenting!

During our travels, I'm reminded of how little people really need to live and be happy. Β I'm sure you have experienced the same thing. Β It's a great reminder as people get ready to "do battle" tomorrow on "Black Friday."

When it's nice to have a triple keel.

Sailing followtheboat Oh no not a Cat. A traditional triple or double bilge keeler. I got to sail on triple keel Golden Hind 31 in Scotland ten years ago. Very rough seas but the little boat gently rolled through it all. Slow as a snail but smooth and gentle in the rough water.

Nice idea but gotta agree with Liz, it would have done little to stop the rocking. Best solution: move!
