What do people do that sail solo when they sleep?

Autopilot sailing and autopilot flying. All is good until it fails and then one now has to navigate and manipulate the controls. Todays automation in the cockpit with flying and sailing has definitely changed how we interact with our machines. Autopilot on, sails set and take a nap, read a book or edit a video. Are we there yet?

So cool! Its neat hearing from everyone about the night shifts. Thats quite a responsible job to handle at all ages. Excellent ! Hope the search for the new catamaran is going well. Your Beneteau is one of the best looking boats but the cat will be a great layout for everyone to have some space. Best wishes for the Holidays!

It's great to see how the children adapt — to some degree more than the adults. This experience will change them at a very deep level.

If you're by yourself on the deck and (like me) find the lifejacket very uncomfortable, wear a harness. The clipped harness is the only thing that counts anyway.

Come on ZATARA, get your S... together. On board ship we still use the Bell system. You know - one bell at 04:30, 08:30, 12:30, 16:30, & 20:30. No day/night, no hours/minutes, no am/pm - Just Bells! Ding, Ding-Ding, Ding-Ding-Ding, etc. All-O-Taut-O sdh in CT

Anna those ships will rarely worry about you. Jack, why? Father? LOL my brothers and I were never so kind, we just called him the "Old Man." I have since learned "What goes around comes around," kinda one of those things you know but become more real once you get there your self. Sorry Keith don't mean to undermine your authority Old.. wait I mean skipper... Lol looking a bit more gray if you ask me.

Last passage I did was on a delivery of a boat very poorly equipped at 4 in the morning I came on to watch as we approached a fleet of large fishing boats out of NY harbor as we got closer I could see the huge nets coming out with the bright lights as they zigzagged ahead of us , no radar no AIS it was sketchy I kept lighting up the sails with my flashlight and made it thru but it was so nerve racking, Cheers and Fairwinds.. awesome videos !

I've been along for the ride since episode 1. It is 18 degrees and there is about four inches of snow on the ground here right now so color me a little envious of your current environment!

Super awesome. Yeah, I'm sure it's nice sailing at night. Keith, as a fellow pilot I always have enjoyed flying the couple hours just before dawn. I'm sure the joys of sailing is similar. Great video with individual explanations! ~ Josh

Interesting info. nicely organized. Important lesson for life, safety first, and think before doing ;-) seems you're all well and the youngsters have adjusted(somewhat) to life on a boat and changing environments, i.e. different people, cultures and countries. Any decision yet on a changeover to a CAT, when, make and the like?

Someone may have mentioned this in the past but have any of you considered getting their amateur radio license. That could provide you with a little more to do during night watch.

You all are so awesome!
Unless you have watched from the beginning, you really don’t know what I mean. To see everyone,
Especially the kids, embrace the sailing life is intriguing. But even more important, even if one has no
Desire to sail off into the sunset, by sharing your life so candidly you have created a blueprint to what you CAN do as a family.
Keith & Renee, you are my hero’s.

Thanks for sharing always interesting to watch. I would like to share an opinion about “usually” wearing life jackets and life lines at night. By the time you think you need it, you already need it. I think you do a balanced approach to safety, however not wearing your safety equipment at night is bad and alone is seriously bad. Keep up the safe sailing

Very cool. Its great to see God's creation and be alone with the Creator at night. So peaceful. The Bible says "Be still and hear my voice". People have said its a spiritual thing out there sailing at night. I agree.

Oh, what a delightful surprise for a Sunday morning. Excellent Episode! Very informative with your usual intelligence and appreciation of the nautical world. Best possible training in truly being responsible for themselves, the boat and everyone, for real, for Jack and Anna in a way they'd never get it on land. Bravo! You read a great deal and I thought I'd mention my novel, Row Well and Live. I think all 4 of you would enjoy it on night watches. It's available from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and others.
