Could you measure the flat section of the cradles that are parallel to the roof. I think I may have bought ones that are too narrow for my two Aruba 10ss kayaks. Thanks.

Don't forget to put your your trash can or large object in the garage bay. When you return you cannot drive into the garage with your Kayaks on the roof.

What kind of car do you have? We have a 1999 Rav 4, you can carry two kayaks this way on a car like that? How do you determine the size of the rack you need?

Actually on the front side you should loop the strap through your car rack and then come up to the front

I tried that before and somehow the kayak is still loose but the way it's on the video is solid and I been doing it like that for a year now no problem.

The way I have it secured is fine. The bar isn’t going to fail, if it did the company would be out of business. You can also secure it to the vehicle rack. Some of these J bar carriers don’t have a front loop so that’s what you would need to do

Ok video, but it would help if you actually showed the attaching of the straps.

Thule now sells J racks WITHOUT the loop at the bottom. I'm beside myself with wonder on how THAT works. Apparently they attach it directly to the rack which seems to me to be more complicated and less safe.

You're definitely right. I ALWAYS wrap it around my roof rack main bars. My Malone J PRO 2's don't have that bottom loop, but the cheap j hooks like in this video are the same and have the loop. I still went around my bars. Also I noticed the kayak is backwards. I have the cockpit facing front to avoid wind vortex.

The way these j racks are designed it's almost impossible for them to fail. The fastening points that attached to the OE roof rack are double butted so that they will not back off or loosen while driving

Patricia Trudell the short answer is that this video shows an incorrect lashing technique. You should never lash a kayak only to the j rack. The loop at bottom is only to assist resting the kayak in position. You always bring the bottom loop under the roof rack itself. Otherwise, the kayak is only secured to the j rack, not to the vehicle. What happens if the j rack fails? There's no fallback mechanism with the technique shown here.

You're welcome. If going on a long trip, you may also want to tie off the front and back.

Do you have a video of you actually going through the steps of strapping them up there? It's helpful to watch it from the beginning before the kayaks are tied down. Thanks!

I'm 5'2 and have to load my 50lb kayak onto the jrack on top of my Caravan. I manage to get it up there(I might carry an 8' ladder but that's besides the point)...my question is...is there an easy way to get the straps to stay at the top of the jrack. Mine get hung up on the foam and I'm far too short to reach them to position them properly. Hence the ladder.

It's a pain to muscle them up there

How about secure them front and back too?
TheSolitaryObserver

Bow and stern is technically to prevent lift too from windy conditions. I usually just do a bow and stern tie back to the rack.

Nancy Bertrand-Loesch Some kayaks don't have the cockpit with the lipped edge. with this one, though, the lip keeps the kayak from moving forward/backward.

You can, on my truck they are perfectly fine the way I've secured them. They don't move at all
Miah

Nancy Bertrand-Loesch I was thinking the same thing. I'm trying to find a system that you don't need bow and stern tie downs.
